C-drama Rebirth the Sequel to Princess Agents Drops to Abysmally Low 2.9 Douban Ratings Joining the Inglorious Squad of Only Nine Dramas Below 3
So the how low can you go spanking with C-drama Rebirth is apparently not done yet. It’s now dropped to 2.9 on Douban ratings and judging by how angry this drama made viewers and how much C-netizens want to mete out punishment it could get lower even lol. In the modern era only nine dramas now have fallen below 3.0 on Douban, with Rebirth joining making it nine. There are plenty in the 3 range which is already very very low but C-netizens most often then not let dramas just die in that 3-rating junkyard. To get below that into the 2 range is active punishment of the gods level voting which means this drama was not just bad it actively upset viewers who watched it. For example, another 2 range drama is the massively criticized big budget summer spectacle Fireworks of My Heart which has 2.7 on Douban haha. Of course it’s been three years now and both FoMH leads Yang Yang and Wang Chu Ran have brushed off the miasma of that stinker and gone on to better dramas and increased popularity so here’s the hoping for Li Yun Rui and Huang Yang Tian Tian. But not for Zhang Kang Le, please do not cast him in any more acting roles. EVER.
I had no idea fireworks of my heart did so poorly. It was not that bad of a drama and not the best but wow shocking. But yah they moved on to better dramas and have done fine so hopefully the rebirth stars learn and grow from it. Hoping writers and directors do too because it’s not all the actors fault.

I feel bad for fans for Princess Agents to getting this for a sequel – 9 years after the tragic cliffhanger. Even the MDL score is low and that site has ratings that I consider inflated. The backlash is lashing. I agree it’s not all on the actors’ skills (or lack thereof). It’s rooted in the script and direction and the casting decisions.
Casting was bad.
There was nothing in the plot that made me avoid looking at how bad the performances were.
Liu Yun Ri was better in the role than Lin Geng Xin, who is usually a weak actor. But still, he wasn’t enough to sacrifice part of my free time watching him. For an actor of the caliber of Shawn Dou (or Elvis Han) I would have done it.
I’ve watched all the dramas directed by Lu Hao Ji Ji. The Double seems to be his only decent project. Rebirth and Generation to Generation are the weakest in my opinion. Both have severe issues in the execution of the scenes.

Elvis Han tends to be allergic to solid scripts. Lol. But he acts better than a good number of actors looking to fight for numbers and traffic. I’ll try to watch Mr. & Mrs. Chen and Secret of Three Kingdoms to savor even a little bit of his performance.

The review is atrocious! I bet Li Yunrui must regret taking this project. His career was promising and on the rise – and then came this epic flop! LYR did his job in Rebirth but isn’t charismatic enough to save the drama. His efforts were all offset by other weakness of the production.
I have whined enough about the FL. Huang Yang Tian Tian was miscast!
I may have to agree with another comment regarding the director. It looks like the director is the real one-hit wonder here, not LYR. He isn’t as consistent as the director of Blossom and Pursuit of Jade. Honestly, the Double seems to be the only time he’s truly hit the mark.
I disagree. Zeng Qing Jie was only successful with Blossom and Chasing Jade. What’s left in his pile of directed C-dramas (which are more than 18), would also leave him as a kind of one-hit wonder if we identify which side weighs more: the decent or the mediocre one.
ZQJ also directed a few successful short dramas, though I’m not really a fan of the short-form format. In C showbiz, one hit is already rare, not to mention two plus other commercial successes. Maybe I just lower standards when it comes to C-dramas, but I consider writers, PDs, or actors with 2+ hits under their belts to be “consistently good.” lol
Nothing will stop Zhang Kang Le from continuing to appear in dramas taking into account the good number of bad actors landing on major roles that I have in mind. Lol.
Liu Yun Rui or his agency don’t have a keen eye for scripting. Perhaps participating in Blossom was a matter of luck. His projects before it were also shabby.
I thought a major issue with Rebirth were all the flashbacks that rehashed what happened in the first drama. That was totally unnecessary and ruined the flow of the story. If people want to know what happened they can just watch the first one. Was there not enough source material for them to do part 2?
I personally did not like the Double. Storyline was super obvious. The only thing that saved it was the great acting and the visuals. So far I am not impressed with this director.

I did not watch this because I was so terribly weirded out by the fact that the FL is a teenager and the ML is a grown man. Looks like I lucked out and clearly didn’t miss anything by passing on this drama. Before reading the comments and article, I didn’t realize that ZKL was such a bad actor. I think I’ve only seen him in the drama “Faithful” and I don’t remember him being particularly bad. But he was only a supporting role there and didn’t stand out as good or bad for me.
