MBC to Cut the Historical Distortation Coronation Scene From Perfect Crown Hoping to End Controversy After Netizens Demand the Entire Drama be Pulled
I hope this is the beginning of this controversy dying down and is probably the only result that can placate the public and also let this drama stay streaming. MBC announced this week that it will cut the coronation scene from Perfect Crown for all streaming and broadcast. Never mind that narratively it was an important scene and also grandly filmed, if removing it will eliminate the source of netizen ire about details that it found incorrect and offensive to national pride then it’s a good decision on MBC. If netizens want to continue to beat the dead horse now on this issue then it will no longer get as much traction, and then the next news topic will arise in the real world for them to move on to. Netizens are also pulling prior interviews on this drama and being judgy that IU and Byun Woo Seok shared the PD was so proud of the final product he told them this drama would make them superstars. Also Gong Seung Yeon‘s interview on a variety show was cut by 10 minutes when she spoke about the drama, a Korean government initiative to provide funding for dramas that expand the culture is reportedly reviewing whether to demand the return of the funding provided for this drama, and a planned tourism campaign to highlight the filming locations for this drama for tourists to visit has been scrapped. This is just an unfortunate situation all around.

This is just making a mountain out of a molehill, but then I’m not Korean, so I might not understand their ire and the reason for it.
just because a bunch of people get angry about a movie doesn’t make it right, another country had people sending an actress death threats over her portrayal of a legendary (and fictional, there’s no historical record that this figure ever existed) queen because the film allegedly potrayed her in a negative way.
But sometimes the mob wins and in a way that’s what is happening here. If that many people found it offensive, what was it doing at 13.8 percent ratings for the finale?
13.8 isn’t blockbuster rating for public channel lmao and typical of ou justifying ur iu queen who made pedoo songs and lolita type stuff. Creepy hagg. U were also justifying baby doll dresses and Olivia when it is well know the origin of dress come from weird fetishes
It’s MBC’s highest ratings for any drama at all in the last two years and other public channel dramas in the 2010s have been considered hits with the same or lower ratings. But I wouldn’t expect someone who seems to only speak in internet discourse and curses to be able to follow plain logic (and lol @ you pretending to care about Korean history)
and babydoll dresses literally were invented by a woman named Sylvia Pedlar in the 1940s. Go look it up before you come here to harass me and koala for your next dopamine fix <3
Doesn’t change the fact it is not seen as blockbuster in ratings. Cope grannie
And baby doll dresses are seen as perverted and women can be perverted too. Hello? R u that type of trashh who think every womennnn is saint? Lmao
Considering u stan iu who made pedoo and lolita songs. Expected. Creepy haggg u r royal we
MBC had already promised to change the audio+subtitles on that scene but I guess they went one step further and removed it altogether, what is the point of having an ‘alternate universe’ drama if people see a hanbok and expect a documentary?
atp if even this doesn’t calm the controversy then it really is just a witch hunt.
It really is turning into a witch hunt. Some people are already digging up IU and BWS’ past scandals/controversies to drag them, and some of those controversies are literally more than a decade old!
Meanwhile pedo Kim Soo Hyun got cleared by the police and we all know that it only takes one hit drama for the gullible masses and male-centered oppar fans to start worshipping him again. People really have wack-ass priorities if they’re more angry at IU than a literal pedo like KSH who made a young girl take her own life 🥀
@Hailey – now we’re properly in witch hunt territory.
It’s very telling that a creep who preyed on a minor and harassed her into killing herself is apparently more easily forgiven than a fantasy AU drama ~not being faithful to history~. He only got outed in the first place because she died! But after Park Shi Hoo, (who wasn’t anywhere near as famous as him) was handed a lead role in a guaranteed hit drama by KBS after actual rape allegations and CCTV footage of him carrying an unconscious woman into his house to assault her there, I have no faith in the alleged moral standards of Korean entertainment, by any logic men who groom and assault women are worse than getting the number of points on a crown wrong.
This sounds ludicrous, right? SK netizens care about how a fake crown looks historically accurate more than a grooming or SA case!!!! lol but not really funny in reality.
I swear God if the drama was a big hit and was actually good,NO one, not even a soul would have complained about this , but I miss the time when dramas was filmed and aired at the same time ,it was easier then to change the plot at the spot
@Merry – Mr Queen was a big hit and was good but people still complained about ‘historical distortion’ because the FL (in a fantasy AU drama) made a joke. And someone’s descendants sued the production too.
There is no winning once the outrage machine gets going.
Typical western people denying the korean sentiments not knowing historical relations between korea China Japan etc. but what to expect from them considering they r fine with their yt countries genociding whole world and call it human rights👍
And this controversy isn’t by netizens. News channels and general public are angry. But iu fans think their queen plastic nose is getting bashed. While she makes pedooo songs lolita type fantasies and justify it. Remind me of mj fans who think he was an innocent fan. That old haggg in comments always justifying her faces. Creepy
good reason to ditch drama then
Stupid reason
no need to symphatize the actors, the have plenty of money already
I wonder what it would have cost to just dub it over and use cgi tech to tweak the crown in some parts. It’s a shame to remove the entire scene, but it does seem like the best move to take the wind of out of the haters’ sails a little bit, though I suspect the wind now is mostly fueled by people who already had hate-boners for IU and BWS. Yeah, it’s okay to get angry and there were legitimate reasons to get angry, but the level of angry is unhinged. I hope some enterprising individual can take the scrapped tourism plan and run with it and make some money off it.
@prettyautumn – if ever there was a solid case for the use of CGI/visual tweaking tech, it would be this.
That would be distortion, too. Though obviously, in this case, a reasonable, not all that controversial use of it.
But just imagine if they went back over other/all films and dramas and cgi/visual tweaked/changed content to satisfy current pc and or irate en masse netizens sensibilities. Though this type of ‘distortion’ is commonplace already,I guess. More in some places than others.
@Jeannie – western media have already done that, censoring/editing old media because it’s ‘offensive’ to present day sensibilities.
They didn’t even spare children’s books, Roald Dahl was an iconic children’s author who’s been dead for over 30 years but in 2022 his publishers paid some scammy “sensitivity reader” group to remove ~offensive ~ and “insensitive” material from his books. The ‘insensitive” material included references to cats and dogs being black, a child reading Rudyard Kipling, and witches always being women btw, though in this case the public was actually strongly against the edits once they found out.
In this case I would understand since it’s so recent and atp it’s more important to stop the actors and production from being witch hunted further.
@ Royal We, Glénat a famous french comics’s publisher , is even editing out some parts of Carl Barks and Don Rosa Disney works .
As for the ones who think that western people deny koreans sentiments, i’m not one of them but it’s a fiction . A bad one but it stills a fiction.
Usually, it’s Chinese who are taking so far because they absolutely don’t want us to touch their 4000 year culture. It’s a change loll’
Isn’t it a fictional STORY? Its not based on reality. It’s a fictional WORLD. Oh my. Time for some balance!
