Tencent Big Budget Period C-drama Hu Shan Wei Close to Confirming Song Zu Er and Chen Zhe Yuan as Leads
It looks like the jostling for a coveted big female lead period C-drama has the front runner winning the race. Song Zu Er is by all accounts going to be the lead for Tencent drama Hu Shan Wei (胡善围) centering around the rise of the female lead in becoming a renown palace historian. She’s also got a male lead lined up on Chen Zhe Yuan, a surprise casting for me because I’m not feeling these two generating chemistry their styles don’t seem to mesh in my mind. Of course nothing is final until announced but this drama should be kicking off production in the next month or two so it’ll be clear by then.

Give me a good script and solid direction, and I’ll watch it – even if, just like in Against the Current, the chemistry is nothing to rave about. But first things first: please tone down the makeup. Lol.
Will they though? lol it just seems like those rural back water dramas are the only ones where they keep it on the down low. They just do what they do with the makeup. Then whine and complain about it but continue on. 🤷🏻♀️
Chen Zheyuan is not the male lead of this drama. His studio denied his involvement last year. He is currently filming a non-idol drama with a 115-day schedule, followed by his drama with Bai Lu in the first half of next year.
You will be fine, I mean you liked General Foundation lol.
General Foundation’s foundation must be a different brand than this one. lol
@Somebody. I think Chen Zheyuan is a more skilled actor than Zhang Linghe though. So the different brand might surprise you more.
hahaha…I don’t disagree with you about the acting, even though I like both actors. I think CZY is more seasoned, perhaps thanks to his formal training at drama school.
This pairing feels odd visually. Guess we wait and see how it pans out.
They both have pedestrian looks that are highly enhaced with styling, so they are a pair made in heaven lol.
Who else doesn’t have pedestrian looks without cohesive styling? lol
@Somebody, nah it’s copium. There are a LOT of Chinese folks in the biz that look good without thick layers of makeup, special angles, filters and whatnot.🤣😂
That’s why actors like Chen Zheyuan look more ordinary in modern productions. Styling in costume C-dramas is a game changer. It doesn’t work with everybody though, e.g., Liu Yuning.
Can you give me some examples of “good-looking” C actors who don’t need styling attention? lol. I actually think makeup artists ruin these C actors’ images most of the time. C actors look much better without opera foundation and bloody lipstick. lol
If they need help to look “good-looking” then they really aren’t. So almost anyone could be one, including me if I run into magical hands.😭
Most people agree that Yang Yang is a bad actor but he keeps his looks consistent in both period dramas and modern ones because he doesn’t really need severe styling lol. There are several videos of him without makeup and filters and he looks good. But there are others who look overly skinny in modern dramas because there are no longer any pieces of hanfu clothing balancing their figure. Actresses like Zhou Xun also look great without many retouching. Tang Yan (although she is a bad actress), Fang Yilun, Zhang Jingyi, Liu Xueyi, Song Weilong, Elvis Han, Shawn Dou, Hu Ge (in his prime), Zhang Ziyi.
GAH, not HIM!!! Slime fest!
