Wuxia C-drama The One with Wu Lei Releases Insanely High Budget Looking First Official Trailer
In the era of belt tightening with drama budgets, it’s so nice to see actual money translated into visual sumptuousness onscreen. Upcoming Tencent big budget wuxia C-drama The One (剑来 Jian Lai or Sword Comes) released its first official trailer this week and has been the talk of the town. Wu Lei anchors the story as an orphan who embarks on a great wuxia cultivation journey into becoming a legendary swordsman and we’re seeing basically every Louis Cha/Jing Yong wuxia novel male lead character mashed into one. The female lead is Vanda Margraf with veteran top actor Chang Chen in a leading role, and from the quick montage at the end of the trailer there are plenty more familiar faces from the C-ent drama sphere. What I love the most is how insanely epic the visuals are, from the sprawling vistas to lush natural wonders to the nestled villages, with scenes that intercut the ordinary life with the extraordinary wuxia powers. From one trailer alone this drama definitely feels like The One to chase in 2027.

Preview for The One:

Vanda yikes. Pushed by wkw and his faction and straight to lead or major supporting roles with no experience and very little talent.
Hopefully she does destroy this drama because while Wu Lei is a very limited actor this type of thing is in his wheelhouse and it should go well.
Saw this clip earlier today and thought “WOW”!
Completely unrelated… but the title of this post “The One with…” reminded me of Friends (US Sitcom)
I think what sets it apart is how the beginning felt realistic and not so fake looking and over the top. Like a down to earth feel that we don’t see so often. The wuxia parts is to be expected to be a bit over the top but it seems balanced. I can see this doing well indeed. That is if the ending executes well lol. Those darn endings is what truly matters at the end of the day.
Pretty as heck 🤩🤩🤩
Chang Chen is so hot, even at 50! The trailer looks good, they didn’t embezzle the drama funds, good job!
Everything about the trailer is amazing. But somehow WL acting feels a little bit lacking. Tho he’s usually will back it up with his cool action scene
He is a very mediocre actor. I am willing to bet now that all he will do here is glare fiercely and stare like his life depends on it.
But it works with this type of drama.
He’s lucky that many of his successful drama have good stories, directing.
I’ve watched 2 of Wu Lei’s dramas and wasn’t really impressed with his acting. I certainly don’t get the hype around him and why he keeps getting these big budget projects. I guess it’s because he was a child actor and household name or maybe he has strong backers. Whatever the case, he is definitely very vanilla.
very beautifully filmed in the beginning…then AI kicked in. I am looking forward to this. I hope this production will be good.
