Republic Era War and Romance C-drama The Lament of Autumn with Cheng Lei and Xu Ruo Han Peters Out From Hot Start and Frustrates Viewers with Ending
Being addicted to trashy entertainment is one of those guilty pleasures that when it happens (all too rare these days) just makes me want to giggle under the covers and keep smashing new episodes. The Lament of Autumn with Cheng Lei and Xu Ruo Han was one of those “just check out” dramas for me but the first ten episodes got me all hooked, the sexy chemistry and push and pull between the leads. He was a walking red flag so bright you can see from the moon towards earth and she was the ultimate Candy innocent sassy maiden and this was just trope upon trope but wildly entertaining to watch. Then the drama slowed it’s episodes releases which sucked the wind out of the airing and the core romance if you want to call it that because a series of separations, dumb reunions including amnesia, all the while a whole ass war is going on around them. It didn’t help that the second male lead had the looks and acting charisma of a walking Mr. Potato Head and the second female lead did bug eyed shrieking 90% of the time. Cheng Lei carried the entire drama on his acting shoulders and Xu Ruo Han was fine in the beginning but her character’s continued obstinate scared bunny act (yes, pun intended) just ruined the romance for me. I would rather he die in battle than end up with her. Anyways, the drama ended this weekend and apparently the ending made even the diehard fans mad so I’m glad I dipped midway through. Buzz and viewership wise this would be considered a decent showing, mid budget and got more traction that bigger budget dramas.
