  3. Her make up in this still cut look too Barbie for historical drama 😅 but i will give it try since i like some of her drama and the budget alone make me curious.

      • It would still be interesting to see maybe once to see some accuracy though. But I wonder if maybe more noble women did their make up like that or most women in general did? Or perhaps they did so for specific occasions?

      • What’s wrong with it, exactly? It’s absolutely fascinating and it’s a part of China’s rich history. If anything, it would set the drama apart from being classic cookie cutter idol nonsense.

      • Wow it look more interesting and fascinating… Somehow it make me remember with The Tale of Geisha make up.

Also for me Tang Dynasty is the most fashionable Dynasty. So it interesting if there was A drama who research more deeply about fashion in that era. Something like The Royal Tailor.

      • @Rero you may want to check The Longest Day in Chang An for a more accurate portrayal of how Tang Dynasty people dress (and make up) at that time. They tone it down a little bit, but it’s still fascinating to see!

      • @Nena, LOL. That’s quite entertaining but accurately reflects aesthetics in most of antient Chinese artistry, not only in Tan dynasty. I don’t know how well the artistic aesthetics interpret actual visual beauty in the eyes of people back then. I personally don’t appreciate those “beauty” paintings at all. LOL. I don’t think most Chinese folks appreciate that sort of “beauty” either.

    • Yes a ridiculous thing nowadays S+ dramas are not even S+ because production companies are trying to save money and now they will say this is S++ based on marketing ?? What is the point when the drama already finished filming and none of that money went into producing it? It reminds me of In Blossom that Youku say it upgraded to S+ based on performance. This is why i say S+ have been looking cheaper because of these marketing strategies. I’m still looking forward to this drama and hope the story doenst disapoint.

    • Yeah I was always wondering about that whenever I watched a very badly written serie counting as S++ or +++ or ++++ lol
That plus is only for pr… not acting not writing not music score nor even filming..

      • the content and title will make you think that this drama ‘quality’ got elevated but in plain context not really. The additional investments from the investors will be use for marketing and promotions purpose only. The drama already got reviewed and approved so there’s no way that they can apply the additional investments to improve the ‘quality’ of the drama itself (e.g. cgi, sounds and other technical post production processing).

High-quality drama production usually receives high amount of investments even before filming and then get additional investments during post-production processing. And another set of additional investments for marketing and promotions.
Getting investments for marketing and promotions is common in c-ent and only helpful to broaden the range of target viewers but it has nothing to do with improving the quality of the drama.
Just saying this bec there are many ZLS fans misinterpreted this into delusional claims that too cringe to read 🤦‍♀️

  4. I have a feeling this genre of period business dramas will get repetitive really soon. Zhao Lusi has one, Tan Songyun has one and Yang Zi is doing two in a row. Pearl Girl will prob have the advantage since its going to air first.

    • This is going to be like the usual business modern drama (so bored of that genre already). Of course it’s more repetitive in modern one because ML always play the typical cold investor/ceo. But ML has bigger role in historical business drama because it’s always include politics. So it’s gonna be less boring and unpredictable

    • It’s already boring.

Liu Yifei had a success with Dream of Splendor and then Zhang Jingyi did with Blossoms in Adversity. Now it’s just rinse and repeat and it’s already boring.

  5. As some comments above suggested, I’ll take S++ with a grain of salt. Per past experience, whether a C drama is interesting enough doesn’t seem to depend on production budget or investment response. We have seen soooo many S+ dramas that were snoozefests while some breakout hits were obviously produced on much lower budgets. We’ll see.
