Legend of the Female General with Zhou Ye and Cheng Lei Release Rollicking New Preview Ratcheting Up the Anticipation
So we’re not going to see this drama until sometime in 2025, likely early in the year, but still it’s totally giving me I WANT THIS NOW! energy haha. Legend of the Female General with Zhou Ye and Cheng Lei released its first teaser last week and wowsers did it excite me. I knew nothing about the story but the preview lays it out nicely – she’s a general who gets betrayed and nearly dies only to come back in a new identity and still general the heck out of everyone around her while getting sweet revenge and the even sweeter love of a hot fellow general warrior. Hhhhmmmm, inject this into my veins now lol. I like the leads and feel like Zhou Ye is being guided really well by her agency in the projects she’s been in.

On eof my all time favourite novel… even thru I dont find lead actress suitable but I will still watch this drama…who knows, I might really like it. The spirit of He Yan is not easy to capture.
I dont feel Zhou Ye is suitable for the rule, she is just too weak when she holds the ‘weapons’, her hands are shaking slightly, she cannot firmly grip the ‘weapons’…
Cheng Lei as male lead looks quite good. He will likely surprise me as I dont know this actor very well but I know he is a experience actor. He looks like a good choice.
I do secretly find Wang Xingyue quite suitable as Xiao Jue too…
The energy from this teaser actually interest me. Those who enjoy reading Chinese novels and have yet to read this story.. you can try to do so. There is English translation version but it is yet to be completed, I think.

This is my favourite novel as well. The only novel that I have reread at least a few times and still love it as much as my first time reading it. I hope the author is involved in the script writing. A big part of He Yan’s character depends largely on how she is written. Her script has to be good. No matter how good Zhou Ye is she is not going to be able to portray He Yan less the script is on point. I do hope the drama take their time and not rush the first bit of the story in the training camp. I love all the side characters there.
@koala
Please read the novel if you have the time. I hope you love it half as much as Lost You Forever. Appreciate all your write ups to inform us of the entertainment news. Thank you very much for your hard work.
@HL
I agree, in terms of acting, Zhou Ye may not be the most suitable to take up this role, although she looks the part and the vibe is ok. But I am quite contented that she is picked for the role compared to some other weaker actresses or less attractive actress.
Her transmigrated version is a bit weak in stature, being slim and raised delicately so I guess I can accept her lack of physical prowess in warfare.
I do find ZY is not very expressive in the trailer so I hope in the drama, she will come across more lively.
Between Cheng Lei and Wang Xing Yue, I personally prefer Wang as I feel he is a more versatile actor. Anyway I will watch the drama coz it’s my one of my favorite novels.
unfortunately I think they will change the plot based on the trailer. No transmigration. Only assume a new identity like The Double. So she is supposed to be strong right from the start. Not like in the novel.
@lev
Yes, there is a likelihood they won’t use rebirth or transmigration plotline.
He Yan is not a passive woman..she is brave and strong but also cheeky and warm hearted person. I hope Zhou Ye dont make He Yan too passive with not much personality.
@hl
Yes I hope they will keep to the personality in the book. Innocent, kind and brave. I recall during her 2nd time as a new army recruit, she was witty and mischievous.
She is petite and skinny with soft face so the furious general role may not suit her but I never thought her acting was bad , in my opinion she is definitely the best female actress in her age zone
Honestly none of c-actress suit a general stature because they all so thin. But their acting can cover it with good directing. ZY looks fine for me from the trailer. and I dont think CL can fail in general character. I am reading the novel because I am excited for the drama. But at the moment the novel not yet convincing me that the drama could be good.
Good point about c-actresses being all so thin that none would suit the general stature. A lot of the male actors also wouldn’t fit too. It’s just costuming and directing to give them the general air.
I think ZY will work fine, and I think her natural RBF will help. I like her better when they don’t have her play cute.
I was actually thinking that while she is frail, her RBF does make her look fierce 😅 most c-actresses are very skinny due to the beauty standard, so I don’t think they’ll find someone that would really have a real general physique anyway.
Yessss I totally agree her rbf helps with the fierce vibe of a general. She looks delicate but doesn’t act delicate so I think this might work. I’m very excited for this…
She really looks too delicate to be a general, but let’s see how they spin this out. Zhou Ye has yet to disappoint me in her dramas.
Zhou Ye is a terrible choice. It’s not just the lack of physical abilities, she can’t act at all.
I am still so disappointed by how they fumbled the casting for such a great novel. Cent continues to be destroyed by capital money that push these hacks into roles they aren’t qualified for.
So many here think ZY is a bad choice? I disagree. She’s fantastic for the role. She looks delicate for a female general, that part I get why people are already criticizing but it’s a challenge for her and I believe she can pull it off. No other drama is on the radar for me except this one. I cannot wait until this airs.
Wasn’t this role between Zhou Ye and Lu Yu Xiao? They made the best choice to go with Zhou Ye. I can’t think of any other actress of this generation that would be better suited than Zhou Ye. She’s a natural beauty who hasn’t done any work on her face, so she looks very handsome and refreshing in plain, no makeup, hair in a bun, man clothes scenes. Her fighting is pretty good too. Zhou Ye is a decent actress for now. She can definitely work on the emotions but other else than that, this role suits her.
I’m not even worried about the cast or acting. Everyone seems suited. I’m worried about the production. I find this production to be very lazy and sloppy? Ever since they wrapped up filing in March, they’ve been releasing useless BTS clips and promos that do nothing for this drama. They never released a closing video either. Then finally they released a trailer that is a repeat of scenes that people have seen. They had 8 months to do a trailer and we got this? I don’t know. I’m not every confident in the overall production quality and story telling. But if this drama fails, Zhou Ye will be the first to be at fault, right? I don’t think the trailer is bad but it could’ve been better? I feel like this production had a fall out or something. Like they’re not putting any effort into it and it shows. The dubbing is bad too. If they were going to be all hush hush for 8 months, something spectacular should’ve been done with the trailer. Anyway, I don’t have high hopes, still going to check it out but it’s not Zhou Ye’s fault which I can already foresee people saying if this fails.
@snow
While I don’t think Zhou Ye is the best actress around, I got to agree she is the best among those they considered for this role.
I think Zhou Ye resembles He Yan more closely compared to Lu Yu Xiao. She also “looks” tougher and will be more convincing in a man’s outfit.
I do agree the trailer is a little lacking, with too much scenes on fighting.. hopefully the outcome and the production value does justice to the novel.
Whatever the outcome, the blame shouldn’t fall on her alone. But I supposed this is a popular novel and she is the protagonist and ultimately, the burden of carrying the show would be upon her. So I hope she does well coz I like Zhou Ye.
I don’t think I ever saw Lu Yuxiao in the casting rumors. It was between Zhou Ye and Wang Churan but WCR had the worst reputation last year so Zhou Ye got the role. Both have the resting bitch face and cold look so either one would be convincing imo. WCR in the end also got another action role in Hidden Shadow
If you click on Zhou Ye’s name tag on here, it was an article Koala posted of how it all came down to Zhou Ye and Lu Yu Xiao as the female male. Both girls even went in and did fitting and camera shots.
Zhou Ye is still building her profile. Her past dramas with the exception of Scent of Time have been pretty bad to mediocre. When people complain about Zhou Ye leading too many dramas, I’m like, I don’t think they want their favorites in her dramas because they’re not good roles/projects. Lol
Zhou Ye is okay with me. I’ve only managed to finish Scent of Time and she did well in there, looking forward to this one.
I think it was this random article I saw https://www.sohu.com/a/710788013_360028 which said WCR lost the role due to her bad word-of-mouth last year. Seems like the production company considered multiple actresses before deciding on Zhou Ye.
Yeah ZY’s team can’t seem to pick the right project for her. I watched Back from the Brink and Everyone Loves Me, and both are lacking in terms of plot. Couldn’t even get past 2 episodes of Love Me Love My Voice. Haven’t tried Scent of Time but it seems to be her best project.
Ahh, I see. WCR would’ve been a good choice too because of her height.
Zhou Ye’s team sort sucks at choosing projects or maybe that’s all she gets because she’s not well established yet. I mean, she’s been waiting for this project called Red Shoes for almost the entire year and production has been delayed to who knows when. Why if that drama doesn’t do well either? The storyline sounds eh? She would’ve sacrificed a whole year for nothing. She hasn’t filmed anything since March whereas others have filmed 3-4, which I wouldn’t want that either because the quality will definitely suffer.
There’s not that many dramas I’m looking forward to. I just finished watched Scent of Time initially for Wang Xing Yue, so I’m still lingering around and read up on Zhou Ye.
That project is more suitable for more established actresses imo. Cos it seems like a non-idol and serious drama. Recently she’s rumored for 1983我来了 with Hu Yitian. It seems like her team has finally decided to stop waiting for that. I saw people saying that the novel is interesting, so it might be a good project.
I love the novel. While reading it some times ago, i thought some names would be great as He Yan. And Zhou Ye was one of them. Other names : Wan Peng, Ren Min, Sun Qian, and Wang Yinglu. I thing, there are many talented actresses in their 20s.
For the actors, Wu Lei was Xiao Jue. But Ryan Cheng isnt bad either. Both have the General look.
I think, the drama will be slightly different from the novel based on the trailer. Hopefully it’ll come soon to my small screen.
I love Female General book because He Yan is that girl. Girl’s girl. And our ML is just HAWT! lol
@Yui, I too feel there are a number of good 20s actress who are could be given better chances with good scripts. This industry is controlled by Capitalist. And they only want the same big names which is understandable as they rather get high ratings.
Xu Ruo Han, Sun Qian, Wang Ying Lu, Wang Yuwen are afew I like and hope to see more of.. There are more, of course.
😍 Love your comment. He Yan is that girl. Girl’s girl!!! Agree… she not just kick ass, she is witty, cheeky, innocent(romance department), warm hearted.
Btw, what is HAWT?
@HL
I agree all the actresses suggested can take on the pretty androgynous look when He Yan had to live or dress up as a teenage boy.
As for Wang Yu Wen and Lu Yu Xiao, they look kind of frail, fair and feminine to be convincing in a boy’s attire.
@yui
I took a look at all the actresses you mentioned. In terms of looks, they would be suitable as well as Zhou Ye. Pretty, down to earth etc. Although, I’ve not seen their acting, particularly in fighting / martial / Wuxia role, they do fit the slim and petite figure of He Yan.
And yes!!!! Wu Lei would be perfect as General Xiao Jue.
Not many actors can’t perfectly portray novel characters. I mean, there are some key elements that contribute to a good adaptation. Lets see how the production team works on it.
I currently dropped Kill Me Love Me. The novel itself was a torture. But the drama, even with the change here and there, i still couldn’t bring myself to continue watching it.
@yui
With a good base material by the famed author Qian Shan Cha Ke, I hope The Female General delivers. I don’t like the changes made to script on the transmigrated part of The Double. But because the novel by the same author was good, and the leads plus the supporting characters were convincing, so it worked out well.
I only watch the first episode Kill Me Love Me. I don’t mind dark materials and I thought the leads are really good. However I agree that it’s rather depressing and disturbing.
I am currently watching Everyone Loves Me and while Zhou Ye is pretty, she really can’t act. However appearance wise I think she kinda fits the role of a female general. Hopefully the script for this would be as strong as The Double.
