The news out of South Korea’s movie market heralds what is on track to become the lowest grossing year in two decades for the industry. That’s not good and it’s already midway through summer and still no big blockbuster to talk about. That could change with the arrival on July 23rd of Omniscient Reader: The Prophet, the big budget high profile live action movie adaptation of a popular webtoon. If done well it’s a rollicking good time with the male lead Ahn Hyo Seob and his brethren waking up in the apocalyptic world of a webtoon where he was the only reader to finish it, and he survives using his knowledge of the story but also with changes along the way. Lee Min Ho plays the protagonist of the webtoon the perfect hero character, with the rest of the main cast for this first arc including Chae Soo Bin, Nana, Jisoo, and Shin Sung Ho. I wish this was a Netflix movie so I can watch it upon release at home but could make for a fun big screen experience.
