Youku Tentatively Schedules Xianxia C-drama The Immortal Ascension with Yang Yang and Jin Chen for July 27th — 12 Comments

  1. I’m not familiar with the IP but will be keeping an eye on this to see if Yang Yang receives better reviews for his performance. I saw the trailer and the scenery reminded a lot of Ever Night. It seems like they may have edited the drama quite a bit with all the delays. Does anyone know the final episode count? It seems like online platforms are shifting to fewer episodes per drama.

      • ugh every time someone mentions Ever Night 2, it pains me so much. I loved Ever Night 1, and grew quite attached to the characters. The second season had too many changes and majority of them were downgrades.

      • I loved season 1 too. My mom saw bits of it when I was watching and was pleasantly surprised to see her idol Leon Lai playing the king lol. I couldn’t finish season 2. Was pretty bummed the ML changed and everything else just went downhill too. One of my favorite characters from season 1 was Mo Shanshan. I really love Yuan Bingyan as an actress and miss her onscreen.

    • Short dramas are gain huge traction online. Youku is adapting itself. After watching Memories beyond Horizon Season 3, I noticed more talks of short dramas coming up…it used to be looked down upon but more and more establish artistes are looking into that format for work and exposure. Even a respected veteran actor commented, regardless what format, movies, long dramas, short dramas, as long as the script is good, nothing wrong with taking up roles.
More and more mobile users have short attention span, thus short dramas with their 10mins/eps works for mobile users. Looks like Youku is looking to balance between 45mins dramas and 10mins dramas.

    • It’s directed by Yang Yang, who also did Ever Night AND A Dream of Splendor. I’m definitely checking this out!

  2. I honestly can’t warm up tonight Jin Chen. I also didn’t like how she portrayed Ye Linger as such a dull dimwit with zero charm. They should’ve kept the actress from season 1 instead.

  3. Jin Chen keeps looking different each drama. I barely recognized who she was. I was about to comment how yang yang is the only actor I recognize but psyche I know the actress too lol. Hope it works out.

    • This drama has everything to work on a commercial level, which is all that matters to the industry. LOL.

  4. It is near August which means they are positioning it then on purpose to justify the possible bad response. If you don’t know, August marks the beginning of the 80th anniversary so the celebrations will be starting, including appropriate programs. Great way to say it is not their fault when it doesn’t do as well as expected for such a huge IP.

  5. The first trailer I ever saw for this drama got me so excited and then literal years passed and I stopped caring. Hopefully it’s good though! I’m not really a Yang Yang fan, I find his acting tends to leave something to be desired but with the right production I think he can pull through.
