The Glory and Goblin Writer Kim Eun Sook’s Next Drama Revealed to be a 12-episode Sageuk Tentatively titled Moonless Night Chronicles
Well if it isn’t the K-drama screenwriter Queen and also the Queen of doing new things. Kim Eun Sook most recently of The Glory, The King, Eternal Monarch, Mr. Sunshine, and Goblin fame is reportedly already set for her next drama, despite the fantasy romance one she recently filmed Genie, Make a Wish with Suzy and Kim Woo Bin not yet aired yet. It’s tentatively titled Moonless Night Chronicles (or Record of a Moonless Night) and the most exciting thing is that it’s a sageuk. Mr. Sunshine was a sageuk but the time period veered into modern era with the female lead in late Joseon garb and the male lead in modern army attire and the story leaned into the dichotomy and political warfare of that era. I hope this is a older era sageuk fully in the past whether Joseon period proper or even earlier like Goryeo or Shilla times. Kim Eun Sook’s earlier works are actually some of my faves including City Hall and Secret Garden which actually I liked more after it was done then during the airing.

Another drama title containing the word “Moon” đ

I think I am one of the rare few people who really disliked Goblin. The OST was great though.
I hated Goblin. It was all visuals, no substance. It had some beautiful scenery and cinematography, and like you said the OST was great. But the actual script was so lackluster. I did not buy into the relationship and the ending contradicted the rules that were set in place, all of the stakes didn’t matter at all in the end.
I found a kindred spirit on this, a miracle. Yes, I disliked it for pretty much the same reasons. Messing about with internal rules of the plot always makes me mad but also the relationship really, really didn’t work for me.
At least we enjoyed the music!
Out of curiosity please, I don’t mean any disrespect, what rules did the end contradict please?
I noticed Lee Joon Gi seem to have fade off abit…not seeing him in dramas for a couple of years. Anyone know what happened to him?
There’s a casting news of him last week. He was offered the role of Joseon King doing detective works. You can check an article on soompi.
It’s not about fading off but it seems to be a trend for him these few years to take one drama in the span of two years starting with Flower of Evil.
Thank you Alexa for your update. I was looking at timeline and noticed he has adjust his acting projects in recent years. I do adore him alot…but I am happy to see him not push himself so hard.
Sounds by the title it might be supernatural or dark story because moonless night sounds gloomy and chronicles sounds investigative or a story or a legacy. đ¤ˇđťââď¸ just rambling đ
I’m more curious about who will be the leading couple. I love the Glory (the Chinese drama stole the trademark but could never be on par with the K Glory LOL). I also enjoyed Eternal Monarch but not Goblin. I had zero interest in Mr. Sunshine bcos of the ML. Therefore, I have a mixed review about KES’s works.
There hasn’t been official reports about this drama. It seems Kim Eunsook mentioned it in an interview. She said wanted to return to writing it. She put the script on hold because she lost her confidence in her writing ability after The Glory because her stories were becoming serious and somber in tone, which impacted her mood. She felt deflated and was therefore unable to see if her stories were engaging. So to get out of her creative slump, she decided to venture into a more cheerful story which is Genie, Make A Wish with Suzy and Kim Woobin (it explains the abrupt change in genre after The Glory).
I think sheâs one of the best scriptwriters out there. You somewhat know what to expect (romance that survives against all odds) but it always feels fresh.
Her characters are memorable, some downright eccentric. They have witty lines and interesting occupations.
Most of her works are major hits, and even those that werenât didnât flop. They become part of pop culture, and are referenced until today. In the early days of the hallyu wave, shooting abroad partially became a thing because of Lovers in Paris.
Sheâs also managed to explore diverse topics and setups: bullying, magical beings, timetravellers/parallel worlds, modern patriots, freedom fighters, rich-poor dynamics in the adult world, rich-poor dynamics in school, small-town politics written initially as wacky that builds up into a crescendo.
I like other scriptwriters too like Kim Eun Hee (Signal, Kingdom, Jirisan), the Hong Sisters (The Greatest Love, You Are Beautiful, Masterâs Sun) etc but Kim Eun Sook has the bigger and more successful portfolio.
Watching Secret Garden live when airing was a wild ride. It gave me whiplash how many changes in direction the story went and the songs were on point all the way through. Probably my favorite of hers because it was a fun drama to watch at the year it aired. It was just so different genre wise of shows I had ever seen at the time. My very first Korean drama was spring waltz on Netflix and then on my own Youâre Beautiful followed by Boys Over Flowers but Secret Garden was just so out there story wise that I was so amused.
