Youku Premieres Period Strategy Thriller The Vendetta of An with Cheng Yi to Positive First Reviews
So it appears to be third time is the charm this year for Cheng Yi, who has had a C-drama premiere near back-to-back-to-back for the past few months. First came The Journey of Legend then Sword and Beloved and now a surprise near airdrop of The Vendetta of An. The weird thing is that his visuals, costuming and hair, are all so similar in the three dramas despite the genre switch from fantasy wuxia to xianxia to now darker more serious politics and strategic revenge themed. The first reviews for Vendetta are surprisingly positive skewing and better than the first impressions for the earlier two dramas. Let’s see if this one stays the course through the entire run, but even then Cheng Yi dramas are still very much not my jam.
Yes! I like this one. Sort of reminds me of nirvana in fire vibe but that one is still superior. I do enjoy these revenge dramas without romance! Will keep watching and hope the rest of the episodes do not disappoint.
Surprisingly positive? 🤣 It just got exposed for water again. C-netz spotted many of its 4/5 stars Douban reviews strangely have a number in front. For examples:
– “34. I haven’t seen such a good drama in a long time, the acting is exceptional!”
– “47. This drama is like Nirvana in Fire, but I like this more!”
– “28. From the first episode to the last, this drama didn’t disappoint me!”
Its nice seeing many actors which I like. The father-son duo from Legend of Zanghai, the crown prince from Blossom, Uncle Wuzhu from Joy of Life, Liu Yijun, Wang Jinsong etc. Its a very fine ensemble cast. The plot is very intense and keeps you on edge.
The last two Cheng Yi dramas were not it. But this one is perfection. I binged ten episodes in a day. This is my favorite role of his since Mysterious Lotus Casebook.
So far, so good. For those who love revenge drama, give this one a try. Im not a fan of Cheng Yi and for the first time, his acting is pretty decent. Lol. The plot is the key. It reminds you of a few popular revenge dramas.
Douban issued a statement today from which it transpires that over 30,000 (!) fake short comments with a five-star rating were removed and nearly 7,000 water army accounts were detected. How many more will go undetected?

It’s still a very well made drama. And one of the best’s this year. Actors are amazing. Costumes and make up are fabulous. Color palette is outstanding and fresh. Directing, camerawork…everything is worth the praise
It’s still have under performance according data only 11 persen share market, drama uncle just released yesterday rose from 6 place to number 2 while chengyi drama still in number 3 despite 5 days broadcasting and still cannot take over finished butterfly drama.
It is a literal, huge flop.
It won’t be able to keep even 15 mil average per episode, that’s how bad it has gotten. It hasn’t even reached 10000 heat on youku.
I really want to know what kind of magical world you Chneg Yi fans inhabit when you are so delusional.
I’m laughing at the obvious water armies here. Intense plot? Well-made drama? This drama seems like it’s made for kids with how superficial and illogical it is. The male lead’s family was wiped out by supposedly the best highly trained soldiers when he was a kid, yet these soldiers didn’t bother to ensure the whole family is accounted for and let two kids escaped. Then these two kids miraculously grew up on their own and made powerful friends without showing any of the process to the viewers. The drama tells us how intelligent and capable the male lead is, but it’s purely through words from other characters instead of action. The male lead already has the capability to march into the palace and hold the emperor hostage, yet he doesn’t use this capability to directly kill the mastermind of his family’s deaths.
