The end of March saw the arrival of Love Beyond the Grave, a classic type of xianxia C-drama with demons, gods, the afterlife, and a mortal and immortal romance between leads Dilrama Dilmurat and Chen Fei Yu. It’s based on a novel so the structure of the story is there without much worry that it will go off the rails, but the drama started off stronger with buzz and the fandoms of both leads buoying up the heat and interest but has been trending downwards as it now heads towards the finale episodes. The main criticism from viewers is the total mismatch between the leads, from visuals to chemistry. She does look like his aunt, albeit a very beautiful one, and his derpy hairsytle with the two side wisps makes it look even worse. But at least Dilraba doesn’t look bad onscreen after the early worries that her costumes were too much and too cheap/garish looking, she does manage to pull it off so kudos to her. Unless this drama makes a last minute resurrection in viewership and buzz it’ll mark yet another so-so outing for Dilraba in successive drama projects, and even paired up with an A-lister like Dilraba can’t make Chen Fei Yu breakout.
