Sunny Happiness Episodes 13-14 Recap — 16 Comments

  1. I knew if I stayed up just a little bit longer there would be an SH treat up on AKP, and I was right! I don’t have anything to say that koala-unni hasn’t already said, so I’ll just say one more time how much I love Yun Jie and Yong Yong. And despite what Yun Chao’s doing, I love him, too – he’s such an interesting character, and one who isn’t a stock character at all. I love that the writer/s gave him some depth and realistic motivations even though he’s “only” a second lead. I always enjoy dramas inhabited by “real” people much more than ones containing only 2D stock characters.

    • Right on. I think one of the strengths of the drama is that the characters’ motivations, background/generally where they’re coming from are shown (and mostly in subtle ways). It thus becomes easy to see the characters as humans and to relate to their behavior.

  2. thanks ockoala!

im loving it episode by episode!
this drama is really a pleasant surprise!

and its reallya breathe of fresh air to see the OTP having such a subtle ways of budding their love for each other.

    simply wonderful! ^_^

  3. Thank you Miss Koala for your info and recaps of the SH!
I already seen all episodes of Sunny Happiness but still enjoying reading your recaps.
It’s sure a heart warming drama and both leading actors did a good job! ^^p

  4. IT is lovely. Lovely Lovely Lovely.

And I’m worried I’ll run all my luck out, I’m not worthy… hitting jackpots every step of the way getting to know this wonderful drama. First it’s your rec., I bet I’ll give you liters of my blood if u bat ur eyes and just tell me to. Then being caught up with life doesnt stop my crazy addiction whore self fr skimming thro the eps and got the gist and happenings and mentally jolted down all the great bits to revisit…and didn’t leave myself to dwell more on it’s shortcomings, yet vividly embrace all the awesome. Then a wkend in need of distractions, some ‘quality’ time with fam, some coersion of bestie into being an SH addict, your wonderful recaps, I’m rewatching it all over again, this time, just focusing on the tender, sincere and natural progression of their romance. And it’s in EVERY step of the way, every little nuance that SH got things so right btn our OTP. From purely the standpoint of these 2 characters alone, they r contrivances-proof. I love how everything is controlled, and gestures, actions, convos btn them are not made grander and more dramatized, but kept subdued yet retaining that little whimsical magic of heart fluttering touches we’ve entangled ourselves in before (or imagined it to be)
All that little jitters they each feel because of the most minute things done/said by the other, the tucks and pulls btn them as a man and a woman in an heightened awareness and concern for each other r flowing so naturally. Every emotional beat they felt for and because of the other party is unfazed by ridiculousness swirling around them, but yet they acknowledge it like real ppl would, attack it as just like ordinary folks sometimes letting their emotionally dictating, at times be levelheaded and pragmatic suppressing their real feelings, and yet their relationship develops and blossoms every little bit along the way in no need of any extraneous catalysts.

I find myself going through my mind thoughts of IF I have a contract marriage fallen on my lap, with my boss… OR if a dreamy crush finds out I have a little dream of playing some fanciful instruments and he offers to give me lessons and let me perform but nth too grand a gesture. I can extrapolate myself or normal ppl to have their lines of thoughts, trials and tribulations. It’s very likely for things to flow just like them, as absolutely unlikely these situation will arise in real life.

As opposed to, the usual settling of romcoms, inventing the same improbably contrivances only for the goal of some OTP chubbiness out of it for us to swoon, forget our brains…without any real deeper resonance. Usu it delivers our drug sweet, we swooned and awwed, but left empty. Their falling in love did not insult my intelligence.

    • Well said. The love story is nice and soft, like a gentle breeze on one’s face. It reminds me of my favorite music pieces I love to hear over and over each day, each time stirring my feelings. So touching.

  5. I definitely love the scene where he jump to reach for his car when he tot that yong yong was hospitalised! Replayed several times. He looked damn suave there! =)

  6. I’ve seen the contract-marriage thing played out in multiple dramas now, but it wasn’t until SH that I realized I couldn’t recall ever seeing a scene in which the two halves sit down and ask, “what’s your favorite food? what’s your favorite color?” — all the things you learn, naturally, as part of a developing relationship. The easy-going conversation masked a subtle tension that was almost an encapsulation of the progress of their entire relationship — a few flares here and there, but for the most part, dominated by reasonable (if sometimes with a bit of good-natured teasing) communication.

I think what I like best about SH — and that your recaps have helped me realize — is that it’s possibly one of the least dramatic dramas I can recall, in that it’s very low-key on the melodrama. It’s also one of the least comedic, too, in terms of the ‘comedy’ part of ‘romantic comedy’. I don’t mean it doesn’t have funny moments, only that it doesn’t resort to slapstick or complete character bastardization (or humiliation) to achieve its humor.

In fact, it’s nearly a pure romance, and in that respect, Yun Chao’s part is almost as the anti-romance. He’s following a similar arc as his brother — faking a relationship for the purposes of some ulterior motive — but he’s not taking the time that Yun Jie and Yong Yong do, to get to know his contracted other-half. For all that he seemed (at first) to be the compassionate and approachable brother, he’s much better at distancing himself than Yun Jie. It’s really subtle, but the parallels between the brothers are done really well, without any really anvilcivious signage from the script.

  7. Does anyone know where I can download this drama with eng subs?

I know about viki but I’m looking for a site where I can actually download it. I’ve checked myasiancinema.com (formerly known as yellowcinema.com) and dramacrazy.com but they don’t have it…

  8. Thanks a lot Koala….

I have limited time to watch drama. So your recaps keep me alive:)

By the way, SH is the most fascinating Tdrama I’ve seen for two years.

  9. Chingoo, have I told you how much I’m thankful to you for reccing this? The otp is delightful, the story just great and alsdjsldfjs omg the OTP!!! *flails* I love SH. I love it. I LOOOVE IT!

There were soooo many wonderful scenes in these two eps. I think I’ll need to rewatch this sh as soon as I’m done with it. XD

And speaking of…This drama is definitely a keeper. Do you know if it’s ever going to be released with Eng subs on dvd? Because, er, I just might buy it.

Also? I’ve finished ep 15 and the drama gods are with me because viki is working for me tonight and I may get to watch ep 16 as well. *massive glee*

    • Thanks. The piano scene is one of my favorite scenes. Loved the way they looked at each other during the performance.

    • I watch the trailer and it seems that a few of the scene were cut including
      1. YJ helping YY out of the restaruant when she is a little drunk
      2. They having a talk abt doing the wedding ceromory anther time but this time for the sake of their bb
So I think this must be from the parts they were shopping for clothes and accessories to dress her up as Mrs XYJ

  10. Doesn’t the main female lead sometimes look like Horikita Maki. Like an older version or a sister? At least something…
