I don’t have much of an opinion about the sudden casting news around School 2017, but I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. If casting newbies is what KBS wanted that would be fine but I’m getting whiplash feeling like the network couldn’t even decide which direction it wanted to go. The drama had been courting teenage actress Kim Yoo Jung for the lead role which didn’t make much sense considering she’s outgrown the franchise after Moonlight Drawn by Clouds and the production claimed to be casting all new faces.
This week Kim Yoo Jung officially declined the role and suddenly the second female lead that was cast Kim Se Jung of idol groups gugudan and I.O.I. has been shifted up to the leading actress role to take over for Kim Yoo Jung. I’ve never seen Kim Se Jung act because she, well, hasn’t ever acted but she could be a natural like Yook Sung Jae. Joining her are some more newbies and one more familiar face – Rowoon of SF9, Kim Jung Hyun, and Han Joo Wan.
School 2017 is slated to air in July following Fight My Way in the KBS Mon-Tues time slot. Directing is PF Park Jin Seok who did the short drama Naked Fireman and screenwriter Lim Soo Mi of the Let’s Eat dramas is penning the script.
A wise desicion. She probably didn’t want to forever be compared to KSH and she’s already big enough.

She never should have been name dropped in the first place. School is supposed to be for newcomers and under-rated actors.
I don’t mind idol actors as long as they can, well, act. And I don’t dismiss them without seeing at least one performance.
Basically what I’m saying is, I think it’s fair to see what Kim Se Jung is like in the role before saying she must be bad at acting.
I don’t why people didn’t want KYJ in this drama. There’s no law that says it’s forbidden to have an actress with experience in this drama. She would play someone of her age and she never played school drama where she’s the lead actress. After it would be too late. And I don’t think it’s a good idea to choose mature role to soon for her.
For the casting, I like Rowoon and Sejung, they were cute in the episode 8 of Lipstick Prince 2. Kim Jung Hyun is already 27 years old and Han Joo Wan 33…. so I’m curious about each role they will take.
33 y.o. will most likely be the teacher?
I’m not going to watch this lol. I’m kinda disappointed with the casting 🙁
Why not audition and cast talented unknown rookie ACTORS?? Instead they go for an idol whose agency wants her to try acting on the side.
KSJ is a natural, saw her acted in The Sound of Your Heart. She’s into lots of variety show appearances too. I think she’ll do well.
