Cheng Lei and Zhou Ye Pair Up for Period C-drama Legend of the Female General to Start Filming this Month

After Cheng Lei got his breakout for My Journey to You there was talk of his leveling up to male lead and it’s here with the kick off filming of Legend of the Female General. The female lead is Zhou Ye who is also getting solid female lead work but still cementing her rising status so this will be an interesting project to see if it deliver another buzz filled reception. I think these two are a match made in heaven, she’s not the most nuanced actress but there is always a strong connection with the camera and her costar and he’s just smoldering 99% of the time even when he doesn’t try.

Cheng Lei and Zhou Ye Pair Up for Period C-drama Legend of the Female General to Start Filming this Month — 18 Comments

    • Oh yes oh yes I absolutely adore this novel too.
After watching her in the scent of time, I think she could deliver….
She looks good doing martial arts…
Cheng lei will just need to play the usual cold general character….

  1. They should have given the role to Cheng Lei’s co-star from My Journey to You (Lu Yuxiao), that would have been a total checkmate with the audience!

    • Agree! And for Zhou Yue to have another drama with Wang Xing Yue because the Scent of Time ending leaves much to be desired. And they have unfulfilled chemistry, such a waste!

    • Yikes you guys don’t even care about the story or suitability of the actresses for the story and just want to watch “CPs”? The story is based on 女将星 Rebirth of a Female General and I really doubt a newbie like Lu Yuxiao can carry a fighting and mean role convincingly like Zhou Ye.

Also Zhou Ye is first billed in this and the titular character, this is 大女主 (like Zanilia Zhao dramas) because a superstar female general is reborn, Ryan Cheng was casted after a long search because they needed an ML who was willing to play 2nd fiddle in a story about a female general. Ryan is a newbie too so that’s mainly why he was chosen.

      • You’re acting like Zhou Ye is some amazing acting talent when she’s still quite green and mediocre. Neither is she at the level of stardom of Zhao Li Ying in 2015. I watched Scent of Time and her emotional scenes were hard to watch. If WXY had been given more screentime, he would have outshone her easily. Personally, Lu Yuxiao despite being a newbie and doing supporting roles has shown more promise and versatility than Zhou Ye.

      • @Kaye

Well Zhou Ye’s first FL role was only in 2023, before that she did mainly side roles? She started out in films as a supporting actress pretty successfully (Better Days as the bully and Chinese Doctor as a mother, iirc she got acting nominations) then her supporting role in 2021’s Word of Honour also went viral. That’s why she went from side roles to main. She’s also a Dior ambassador and one of the cnetizen voted “4 Beauties” along Wang Churan, Tian Xiwei, Song Zuer.

In any case, Zhou Ye auditioned and graduated from Beijing Film Academy so that itself gives her career a lot more opportunities than Lu Yuxiao who iirc studied fashion in England and came back to pursue acting halfway because her mother is a CEO in a related industry. You can go check out the recent Elle event where Lu Yuxiao got criticised for looking dowdy, IMO she’s just a newbie/girl next door/普女 while Zhou Ye is someone both the film, fashion, and TV industry is banking on to be a leading face of her age group.

      • Attending Beijing Film Academy doesn’t mean you are a talented actor lol. Fiction Guo and Meng Ziyi are examples of mediocre acting. Even Lui Yifei received criticism early in her career for being a “flower vase” and is still bashed for emotionless/stone-faced acting. Zhou Ye needs to work on her emotional scenes because the one tear and screaming is just not going to cut it. Out of those 4 beauties, only Song Zuer and Tian Xi Wei are good actresses. It’s unfortunate that Song Zuer is cancelled because she was the one receiving the most praise. But China only cares about visuals for its luiliangs, acting prowess is at the bottom of the list.

      • Beijing Film Academy needs to raise their standards because why did they admit such bad actors lol: Liu Yifei, Gulnazar, Zheng Shuang, Yang Mi, Fiction Guo, Meng Ziyi, Huang Junjie, etc.

  2. I love that novel but she is not worthy of that role, there is no way she can pull off what this character requires and he isn’t any better. How disappointing. Ah well, the novel remains.

  3. Oh read a comment that this novel has little to no romance, is this a Zhou Ye thing i.e. not keen on sweet scenes with co-stars like Scent of Time? But Back from the Brink has some… and a bit cheesy.

    • Not a Zhou Ye thing. She has filmed more intense kissing scenes which can be found her movie Yesterday Once More and her unaired series Love Me Love My Voice and Falling in Love Again. It may be the director’s style for the series that caused her to have minimal romantic scenes. For sure, Back from the Brink’s lack of kissing scenes were the director’s decision.

      • Yesterday Once More had Arthur Chen Fei Yu as her Male Lead. He can kiss a plastic board and still make chemistry with it. I will pay to watch him kiss all day.

  4. I don’t think Zhou Ye is a good actress. She is not a terrible actress but she is very mediocre. I saw her in Back from the Brink and a few episodes of Scent of Time. She reminds me of teens acting in high school plays that say their lines and don’t deliver much talent. Not impressed but I don’t hate her either.

  5. Bottom line. She’s already 25. She’s not “green”. She’s just not that talented. There are extremely talented actresses that give great performances even in their teens, that’s why it’s called talent. The truth is if she was not so pretty, her career would be almost non existent. She has gotten this far due to her visuals and that’s fine. But stop pretending she is a great actress. If she wasn’t pretty, she would be very boring to watch

  6. Hmmm, talking about how strong zhou ye as an actress is fine, but achieving perfect acting is very hard sometimes. One has to be reasonable, at least she have done many different roles up to now. Some actresses just keeps doing the same role e.g
(Zhao Lu si) and is it makes it so boring for the normal viewer to watch. Is zhao lu si acting super good? I just don’t get how can she has so many fans by acting the same type of role every single time, how does one grade acting especially when the actress has only played a few roles hahaha
