Xu Kai and Yang Yang Both Jostling for Male Lead in C-drama Adaptation of Wuxia Romance Novel Qi Xing Cai

So this C-novel a few years ago had a female lead lined up in Song Zu Er, but production was slow and in the interim she’s no longer attached. The project adapted from the novel Qi Xing Cai (七星彩 or Colorful Seven Stars) has recently been on the lookout to sign the male lead. In talks are Yang Yang and Xu Kai, not starring together but either would be the top billed male lead. Both are reportedly very interested in the story is reportedly a strong romance with likeable characters and a solid world building. I much prefer Xu Kai personally but let’s see whether these two actors or someone else ends up cast.

Xu Kai and Yang Yang Both Jostling for Male Lead in C-drama Adaptation of Wuxia Romance Novel Qi Xing Cai — 25 Comments

  1. Xu Kai is not the best actor but he can actually act, unlike YY. plus YY is getting more and more oily as he ages. Still an amazing face card but that’s about it.

    • I have to agree with you on the oily bit! When I first heard the term I wondered what it meant but watching the previews of Yang Yang’s latest drama (The Immortal Ascension) and seeing the way he acted in Fireworks of My Heart, it explained what that term meant very well.

Personally, I wish neither he nor Xu Kai would sign up for this drama and they get someone else instead. I’ve not been enthusiastic about Xu Kai’s acting for years now. It’s like he’s going through the motions but his heart’s not in it. And that is painful to watch as a viewer knowing he has so much talent but it isn’t truly being utilized. He should take a break from acting to re-evaluate his career and sign up for less dramas. It might help him better focus.

  2. I feel like Xukai enjoys these roles so hopefully it goes to him and he’s able to bring life to the role. I love Yang Yang’s visual and used to be the biggest fan of his, but I haven’t been able to watch him in anything since his last horrible drama Martial Universe.

    • Martial Universe was almost a decade ago! I do agree he was pretty bad in that drama, which had a ton of other things going wrong for it. I got sucked in by his visuals in Love O2O and then was utterly disappointed he had no actual acting talent in Martial Universe. I think he’s generally okay playing roles that have more mellow personalities though like You Are My Glory.

  3. There was a melon weeks ago (been denied by Lu Si’s side a few days ago) that Deng Wei was being paired with Lu Si. At that time, I thought it was an interesting tidbit because Deng Wei’s side didn’t deny it.

    • Thats because its true,lu si is considering it,but then deng wei pull a chen zeyuan, request equal billing,so lu si bail.

      • R u sure because I heard her next drama could be a mordern one, so maybe indeed she has not received that script yet.

      • Oh! So Deng Wei is gone now because Lu Si bailed and then he is replaced by either Xu Kai and Yang Yang?

Darn it. I would like Lu Si to come back and reconsider the role with Xu Kai.

  4. Is Yang Yang still worth high value investment? I dont know what is his market value now…
Isn’t Xu Kai over exposed these couple of years…he starred in a number of drama but nothing standout.
Even in Sword and Fairy, Esther seem to get more attention. Not all good but she is the topic of the drama.

    • Xu kai is definitely overexposed at this point, he hasn’t gotten the big hit he is hoping for,he should definitely take a break, so that his audience can miss him little.

    • @HL

Actually, for all the complaining about Yang Yang he has consistent high views. This isn’t just the web, even Fireworks of my heart (or whatever the title, that firefighter drama that was controversial), actually had the ratings of 0.6

He may be smarmy but he is still very handsome, he is actually well known and as long as he sticks to a certain type of drama, he is a much more sure investment than XK

      • That is what matters most to investors. They decide base on rating/numbers, it will not be based on skills. It will be interesting to see who is the real lead…it might be someone else.

      • Yes, Yang Yang still gets good ratings despite his years of poor acting. Don’t know if Fireworks will change that because it seems like people finally cared that he can’t act. But his drama with Director Yang Yang may turn the tide back.

Xu Kai has actually improved but the last 3-4 dramas had flopped or had poor ratings. He still has a couple of dramas coming up with very popular actresses so he may also get ratings again.

I prefer Xu Kai. He’s more charismatic to me. But why not a lesser known actor? Someone fresher.

  5. If they want someone who can act, looks dashing and excels in martial arts roles, Jeremy Tsui should be at the top of their list

  6. Interesting!! I saw on X about this melon casting of Yang Yang but not with Xu Kai. The melon I saw was YY and Chen Zheyuan actually. (I’m nervous of the billing battle that’s gonna ensue, if ever.)

If it’s with Xu Kai, my eyes would be blessed by double visualsss. Not that CZY isn’t good-looking but XK & YY visuals are higher imo. ^.^

  7. I’ll check YY’s modern dramas but XK for costume. Although YY was dinged in FWoH, he had charm in Love O2O and You Are My Glories. On the other hand, XK’s visuals and acting look better to me in costume and his modern dramas all failed IMO.

  8. I would pick xu kai over yang yang always lol. Yang yang has no chemistry with his costars and his acting is so stiff. Xu kai can be excellent in a suitable role!

  9. I like Yang Yang in Glory of the Special Forces, King’s Avatar and You are my Glory. Also in Vanguard movie. I was not even aware that he act badly. I hope to see him more.
