Li Yi Tong and Liu Yu Ning Exude Darker and More Intense Vibes in New Still for C-drama A Dream Within a Dream

Oh, me likely these new stills for A Dream Within a Dream so much more than the first posters last week. It’s dark rich colors just amps up the intensity element rather than the pretty bright colors that make it seem more childish. Starring Li Yi Tong and Liu Yu Ning, going for the cute plucky female lead vibe and delivering on it while he’s all broody and worried and it’s like I’m going to get my Prisoner of Beauty crack through this even if that drama never airs. A note that this drama just started filming so it’s not reaching the screens until mid-2025 or later.

    • 😂 I hear you. They never fail to let loose. They are very dedicated. I'm a fan of LYN and I don't even comment on every post about him. 🤣

Anyhow, I do like the new stills. Darker vibe and comedy? Will check it out.

  • I am dying from a drought on costume C-dramas right now. As much as I enjoy watching the recently released modern C-dramas, my main staple and what I really enjoy most are costume C-dramas.

Liu Yu Ning looks so handsome in these, I prefer his acting over Li Yi Tong's which can be hit or miss for me (she's not bad, just bland). I'll keep my eye on this one.

    • Saaaame. Love my costume dramas!

Never been a fan of LYT and she's played a lot of FL in many dramas too. I've tried 3 of her dramas and dropped all. She is very pretty, but just like you said bland.

    • Indeed! I an still waiting for a fascinating costume drama. But let's hope it will be something else before this one, because this one will probably air next year! (supposing everything goes well, no scandal etc).

      • I’m still hoping for a miracle that The Prisoner of Beauty could air, one day. 🥹🥹 Meanwhile, if you’re into a more realistic, historical setting, but still somewhat legend-based adventure story, 天行健 (Heroes) is BRILLIANT!!
You might need to have some knowledge of the late-Qing Dynasty’s history to fully understand the plot, but even without that, the storyline, the characters and the photography in this drama is still top notch! And it’s breathtaking since the first scene, you don’t have to wait till ep xx!
It’s a pity it got airdropped last min with zero promotion like that🥲

(I do have a problem with this Eng title though😂 [PERSONALLY] I find it very generic and confusing bc 說英雄誰是英雄 had the exact same title. N also it’s nowhere near as impactful as the original title that comes from the quote “ 天行健,君子以自強不息”. It’d be more memorable if Bai Yicong (screenwriter & producer) actually uses “Blowing in the Wind” as the official Eng title lol (He actually quoted the Bob Dylan song in the first draft of Heroes’ synopsis.)

  • Is plastic surgery that expensive in China? Just get it done in Thailand then. Why is he torturing his face and everybody’s eyes? Can’t he spare a couple of bucks to get his eyes done? That’s the least he can do if he insists on staying as an actor. Ugly people never have the self awareness to not show up in the public eye urghhh

    • Goodness, look in a mirror yourself! Ugly is as ugly does. It's not people's faces that are ugly, it's their hearts and venomous words.

If you really don't have something positive to contribute, you might want to take a leaf out of the book and say nothing at all.

  • Am I really blind because I find LYN better looking than that guy who wears too much make up. Or is my concept of beauty really screwed up? I wasn’t really aware of him until A Journey to Love but when I watched that show, I really thought he was quite attractive and had great chemistry with the FL. I don’t get why he’s called ugly in Chinese beauty standards. Please someone explain it to me.

    • Beauty in the eye of the beholder thing. I thought he was dashing in the fight scenes in AJTL. He's not the best actor, but he is likable and interesting enough.

There are many popular "pretty" actors that are meh to me. But I think we are sane enough not to go around bashing people if they aren't attractive to us.

    • Cnetz call him a mouse or a rat even more due to his features.

Tbh I think he just showed up at a really bad time. Today when you aren't a good actor but just mediocre like him, they at least demand full eye candy because so many mediocre, and worse, people are getting leading roles. So he is getting the blowback to that. He is not super hot nor is he a great actor. Tough spot right now.

I have never seen people dispute his singing but the second you talk about his acting, it gets messy. It is what it is, the situation in cent is way too ugly with the capital pushing too many unskilled people. I wonder if it will all blow up in the end.

    • No @mina, you are not blind. I agree with you.
I find him good looking too... better than soo many other "pretty" men who just look like fragile dandelions who simply does not ooze masculinity.

I don't understand the bashing either... but I'm not going to stop them from doing it. It's their prerogative. Just like what you like, and leave them be.

    • well, its not that difficult to figure out. his looks just doesn't fit the chinese's standards. not the first time cfans and ifans have different taste.

      • I don't know if I'm misunderstanding Chinese beauty standards for the acting industry, but doesn't he fit a lot of them? Long face, prominent nose, tall and skinny - that's the general type of look preferred for Chinese actors these days and LYN matches it exactly. He doesn't look drastically different from other actors who are hailed as handsome, in my opinion at least.

  • LYN does have double eyelids? Didn't quite notice it in AJTL, but I'm watching his variety show with Dilraba and Zhang Ling He, and it's pretty obvious that he has (inner) double eyelids. Was quite surprised as well, because I thought he had monolid all the time. I looked up for some drama stills of AJTL and dude indeed has double eyelids. Maybe his cat eyeliner in AJTL took away all the focus lol.

Anyway, he isn't the most handsome dude in C-ent. In fact, wasn't expecting much from him before having watched AJTL, but did slightly feel that he was not up there yet as the male lead (cast/status wise). Was surpised that they cast him (who only played supporting roles prior to AJTL) next to LSS, AJTL was supposed to be her big comeback drama in the period genre. But boy proved me wrong, I really did gradually enjoy watching his Ning Yuan Zhou, from having no feelings in the beginning until rooting for his character in the end. Thought he had great chemistry with LSS (I know most of the C-netizens don't think the same way lol). Yes, boy is not the most handsome dude in C-ent, but does nobody care about height and shape lol? His 192cm, broad shoulders, not too fat not too skinny body shape worked really WELL for his character Ning Yuan Zhou, especially next to LSS. I think they matched perfectly physique wise. Can't really think of anyone else who can "look" better as NYZ coupled with Ren Ruyi, who is suppose to be more skilled/advanced in martial arts than him, but at the same time does not make you feel that NYZ is "weaker" than Ren Ruyi. And I truly think his body frame played a major role in this.

I find him quite likeable in real life as well (based on his interviews, variety shows and live streaming etc). Really sincere, great sense of humor and quite out-spoken/direct as well. He mentioned that he felt especially sad for all the negativity around AJTL, because he loved this production and his character NYZ so much with all his heart, so the backlash made him feel he that is not worthy of loving ATJL. Don't understand why so many people are hating on him, frankly speaking, there are more less good-looking, less talented C-stars out there who are getting lead roles.
