Park Shin Hye and Kim Jae Young Lead Script Reading for K-drama The Judge From Hell

Filming has already started for SBS K-drama The Judge From Hell and it’s slated to arrive on the small screen at the end of September. Starring Park Shin Hye and Kim Jae Young, I love that the drama isn’t trending buzzy and instead just seems to be an interesting topic with a solid cast. The drama is primed as the Park Shin Hye centric show as her character is a Demon who moonlights as a Judge in the human world but uses her day job to punish evildoers by sending them to eternal jail i.e. Hell. I love it lol, go wield justice any way possible demon girl!

  • Crazy how PSH used to be one of the biggest Hallyu actress at some point in her career. She hardly gets any buzz these days and even her comeback drama felt super flat pre airing. Not sure I'm a fan of the premise so I'll depend on the reviews before deciding if its worth a go.

      • I think it's due to personal choices and her agency's choices as well, of course.

It can't be ignored these facts. She got married, became a mother and decided to focus so much more on her private life. They're death sentences for a career based on popularity which is hallyu wave.

    • PSH lucked out due to popular idol dramas at the peak of Hallyu. Her acting has zero color or charm.
Her husband is kind of shady so public opinion also went down in SK.

      • He was close friends with all those Burning Sun guys. Was even dropped from the IU Hong Sister drama back then due to public backlash. You can find old variety show clips of Zico and him joking about contents of their personal phones. So no public evidence of direct involvement per se but shady overall.

    • She did take a 2 year break and even actors struggle with that post-army-hiatus comeback. I've been watching kdramas for 20 years and most of the big Hallyu actresses don't generate much buzz anymore unless they happen to recently score some hit too big to ignore. Or happened to marry a top actor, in which case their names will always be linked. Choi Tae-joon isn't a bad actor (I love seeing him in supporting roles), but he was close friends with a bunch of the Burning Sun guys once upon a time - so even if there was no evidence of his personal involvement with that scandal - it's just better for her to keep a low profile. Better for the child they have too.

But I'm glad she's still getting work. The premise of this drama sounds a bit boring to me. Guess it's all down to the execution.

    • she got married + had a child in her early thirties, no Hallyu actor or actress who did that has managed to retain the same level of popularity they had before unless it's Jun Ji Hyun (Son Yejin is currently still on hiatus but I can see her pulling it off too depending on her choice of comeback project).

I'm not surprised so many of them put off marriage till they're almost 40 or older, look at the reactions any time a Hallyu celeb in their 30s - male or female - is even rumoured to be dating, forget getting married or having kids.

      • Son Ye Jin has always been more Chungmuro than Hallyu and it's hard to compare both segments, since they appeal to different audiences and channels. SYJ's comeback project will be a movie by the Park Chan Wook and it may not generate as much buzz among Hallyu fans on social media, but it will likely make more noise in film festivals, red carpets, and by film critics.

Jun Ji Hyun is both Chungmuro and Hallyu, that's why her career wasn't affected by marriage and motherhood.

As for PSH, I've always found her acting to be bland so I'm not really surprised that she hasn't had a big, impactful project in years. Best of luck to her though. She seems like a nice person.

      • You cannot compare PSH with SYJ or JJH .. they are in different leagues even if you compare their filmography up until their early 30s. And LBY hit big around the time she got married. Private life has less impact if you are a good actor. It really depends on skills and positioning in the industry.

      • Son Yejin is already filming a new Park Chanwook movie with Lee Byunghun so her comeback might not be popular with the kdrama crowd (it hasn't even been covered in most kdrama blogs but is getting press from Hollywood poublications) but she's guaranteed another hit movie. Other than Jun Jihyun the only other actress who got married in her early to mid 30s who seems to have sustained the same level of popularity is Lee Boyoung who still gets solid hits in popular kdrama projects.

    • Probably because newer kdrama fans only know like 5-10 actors and actresses from the recently aired dramas. watch the new kdrama edits in tiktok, instagram, youtube, etc., and it's always the same people from recently aired dramas lol. meanwhile psh didn't really have any drama that recently aired that also appeals to younger millenials and gen zs. also, as a married woman with a child, she probably has a harder time appealing to younger kdrama watchers who prefer to stan unmarried/single actors and actresses so they can ship them to whoever they like. at early 30s, she's still young but her being a wife and mother probably ages her in the eyes of younger drama watchers. think of kylie jenner suddenly not being "cool" to younger people anymore once her content switched to mother and child stuff lol. and as the other commenter said, she really lucked out in her drama choices in the early 2010s. yes, she played other roles other than the poor downtrodden girl or the quirky roles in idol dramas (she played varied roles in the royal tailor, miracle cell no.7, etc.) but people tend to remember her more in her more popular roles, like in heirs, you're beautiful, etc., and those dramas are seen as "cringe", "toxic", and dated by new drama watchers, so not really a good thing to be associated to those lol. just my 2 cents

    • She's a child actress. She's still successful but in less glamorous style. Now, she has her own family too.

  • PSH is one of these actors that people love to hate based on her performance in like 6 dramas she have done in her filmography of 60+ works including tv series, movies and tv specials.

The only really serious problem that I've with her is the same problem I've with other actors. It's the lack of will to change her looks for each project but countless actors have the same problem.

  • Eh, I like watching her. I don't expect Oscar worthy performances but she is ok. Also I really hate how when women have kids their popularity suddenly disappears while at the same time if she didn't get married and had one, people would also be on her case. Women can't win.

    • Their popularity not disappears after marriage, most of people don't care about that. But I'm agree they can get way less good offers from producers after a marriage.
I'm sure some women faced struggles because of that, but I doubt in PSH case her marriage or kid is the problem for her popularity.
I can't remember that her dramas created a buzz for last 10 years.
Her last good drama Memories of the Alhambra was in 2018, 6 years ago. She didn't film in any drama for 3 years. After that Sisyphus: The Myth, weak drama. After she got married her new drama was Doctor Slump - not a buzz drama as well.
Only strong hallyu actors and actresses can remain their buzz with long hitaus. Others need to prove it like from beginning.

      • @Olesya she did two successful movies from 2018-21, one of them managing to score 2 million moviegoers even in the middle of covid.

Sisyphus is her only real flop in the last ten years, if you look at the actual ratings numbers it might seem like Dr Slump had no buzz but as a cable drama it still scored 6-8 percent ratings which is more than some other cable dramas heralded as 'hits'. She's also one of the few women to have led a drama to 20%+ ratings in that time, post-Doctors (2016) she's only done cable dramas where it's much harder to break double digits and an 8 percenter would be considered a major hit (I don't like Memories of Alhambra but it did get 10 percent on tvN). I can't believe I'm defending her but she mostly had the numbers on her side, she can't be said to have flopped in her comeback either.

      • I'm not saying she doesn't have popular dramas or movies, I'm talking about the buzz.
Successful movies are good for her acting career, but not for "k-pop" popularity, since most of k-drama watchers don't even know about very successful actor Hwang Jeong Min.
Her drama Doctors was popular in 2016, but was quickly forgotten. And Alhambra and Dc. Slump didn't create big buzz like LR or Good Partner.
Again, I'm not saying she's a flop actress, I'm saying she doesn't create pre-drama buzz.

      • @RoyalWe PSH has always been an average actor riding on the popularity of her male leads to find success. This became evident when she started doing movies as the stronger female actress Honey Lee and JJS both stole her thunder in Silenced and The Call respectively. The more female centric roles she picks the more outacted she gets which is her biggest problem. Being a Hallyu star only gets you so far and I agree with the comments saying that marriage her career and a lot of longtime fans on Twitter actually finally gave up on her permanently after that. She still has a loyal fan base but most of them hold onto her due to nostalgia. She’ll never be able to match her contemporaries like KTR and KGE or even other former child actors like PBY. At this point even SSK is more in demand and has more buzz than her. She let the years pass by without working on her craft and it shows in the roles being offered to her. I’m glad she still has a career but I’m not longer excited about her potential because there isn’t any. She’ll definitely go on another break to have her second child because she did say she wants more than 1 child but that break will hurt her even more. Maybe she’ll have better luck in her 40s but only if she moves away from romance dramas and starts embracing other roles like LBY did after her marriage.

  • Love Kim Jae Young, hope this drama elevates this underrated hottie's profile! Park Shin Hye isn't my favorite but I don't dislike her either. I don't mind watching her dramas if the plot or other cast interest me, I just don't go out of my way to watch her dramas. Will watch this for KJY!

  • Aren't the dramas of Taiwan or Japan relevant anymore? I rarely find posts dedicated to them or recommendations.

    • I have not been able to connect with the ones recommended to me but it might work for you:

      - Someday or One Day
      - Oh No! Here Comes Trouble
      - More than Blue: The Series
      - Imawa no Kuni no Alice
      - First Love: Hatsukoi
      - Hanzawa Naoki
      - Boku no Ita Jikan
      - Gannibal
      - Rainless Love in a Godless Land
      - Danger Zone: The Dark Night
      - Shards of Her

  • Park Shin Hye is usually a hit or miss, but I'll check it out because I liked her performance in The Call. Any recommendations of historical K-dramas? I have only seen Empress Ki.

  • Personally I like shin Hye alot, she's one of my bias. I tend to think that although it could be argued that her acting isn't always the best, she can be veryyy impressive with the right roles. She needs to stop picking roles where she's nice and kind. I remember the first time I was sooo impressed by her acting, she wasn't acting a rebellious teen, i was sooo impressed, I can't remember if it was doctors or Pinocchio. Also in Dr slump, when she finally stood up to that bully senior and quit, that moment just stays with me, I was blown away. Since she's from hell in this drama, I hope they don't make her nice or kind. Mean shin Hye is fire everyday, I can guarantee that. Anyways I'll be checking it out..... shalom

    • LOL. When actors only work in one specific type of role, they miss out on the opportunity to expand their acting range. And it can get boring to see them play the same character in a different production. LOL. Like the first chinese actor I saw Yang Yang, he is decent in roles where he has to be of few words. His good looks are helpful because his coolness makes him sexy. Cha Eunwoo applies here as well.

      • shut up hispanic h*e! your wang xing yue gege is a bad actor too but you were raving to the moon about him.

      • @lol I can't shut up because we are not talking. LOL. I never wrote that Wang Xing Yue is a talented actor, I remember I limited myself to comment that he is impressive in The Double, and that he has yet to prove himself because I was/am aware of his sub-par performances in his previous works. Having critical thinking shouldn't hurt, but you certainly do not have the skills to be rational. LOL.

  • My Kdrama bias. I've since moved on to C-dramas but I'll always be back for a PSH drama. Her last drama was a snoozefest hopefully this one is more interesting.

    • I rarely read comments that point out having gone from K-dramas to C-dramas, because it's usually the opposite (for quality reasons, I have decreased my consumption of what China produces in entertainment). Interesting, what made you switch?

      • I enjoy costume dramas more than modern so I switched. If you like modern dramas just stick to K-dramas cos 90% of modern C-dramas are bad. Some of my fave costume dramas are Joy of Life, The Untamed, Nirvana in Fire, Sound of the Desert, Word of Honor, The Blood of Youth (I enjoy action more than romance but if you like romance, I think Eternal Love and Ashes of Love are not bad).

  • I'm actually slightly intrigued. I never really liked PSH. I can't remember the last drama I finished with her in it. All of her popular shows were absolutely cringe with a capital C. And her loved roles were repetitive and not so believable. I think this largely has to do with her Mary Sue persona in each of her dramas. This new one sounds like she'll finally play a baddie and can act like a b!!ch. Let's see how it goes.
