There was news this week that actor Kim Nam Gil was doing the K-drama Get Schooled (based on webtoon True Education) as his next drama. Netizens got upset because the original webtoon story has elements of violence, racism, and misogyny. But if you ask me, those elements likely are the issues in the webtoon the teacher character is there to educate the students into NOT doing. But it appears netizens don’t want to see this type of story onscreen regardless and so complained that Kim Nam Gil was agreeing to star in it. He released a statement this weekend explaining that he turned it down already, and the news about him starring in it was the production asking him to reconsider and offering it to him again. But he’s not doing the drama and looks forward to sharing his return to the small screen in The Fiery Priest 2 with viewers.
There are weird casting choices and this one is weird from both the leads itself…

The webtoon is banned in several different countries. The scenarios for the lessons are horrible. Like a black student in Korea being racist toward Koreans, the justification for using the n-word because the black student was racist? Or the distorted views of feminists and violence toward the teacher because she was teaching feminists ideals? The webtoon was bad all around.
Not portraying these onscreen doesn't mean these problems go away in society ...
Cop out excuse for far-right sympathizers. It ultimately depends not on what but HOW it is portrayed.
Good job in wanting to ruin a Korean actor's reputation and livelihood
This reminds me of how knetz commenting about shin hyesun movie brave citizen, saying that they should not portrays bullying to that extent. The movie was about teacher beating up bullies. Idk, do they think these bullying didn’t happen in their country?? Saying all that tho, the movie was average
It’s an incredibly racist, misogynist and gratuitously violent Webtoon. I’m glad he has chosen to stay away from that filth.

I am glad he turn down the drama as it is not worth sacrificing one's career over a mention. He took a long time in building his acting career.
I'm glad he turned it down! I'm tired of the school bullies in kdramas. I know the scenarios are just a reflection of some of the more horrible stuff that goes on, but those bullies are on another level of evil and insane.
It’s such a trash webtoon and there is absolutely no reason for KNG to do it. Interesting timing too with FP2 premiering this week and already gathering so much positive momentum. Feels deliberate so glad he put a stop to it immediately.
They need to just cancel this drama already. The sentiments against it are too terrible at this point. Anyone who takes on the roles will be criticized.
I'm glad KNG are back to small screen again. The Fiery Priest 2 was so fun to watch with the first 2 eps moving fast. It's action packed. Honey Lee is hilarious. I'm so much looking forward to new eps.
