So xianxia C-drama Moonlight Mystique is winding down its run and will go down as not a flop but not a hit either, got some buzz, heat, and viewership, but not enough considering the draw female lead Bai Lu was supposed to bring in. TBH the story is derivative and the lead couple don’t have strong chemistry, the male lead Ao Rui Peng in both visuals and acting remain limited, and the OTP story arc is not as compelling as the second leads. Which brings up that second female lead Dai Lu Wa is being called by netizens and acknowledged by C-ent insiders as the breakout star of this drama – she’s getting praise for her visuals and for her so-called jinjiang acting, which is a phrase that denotes she acknowledges the audience and connects with the camera in delivering emotion. Recently Ding Yu Xi was praised for his jinjiang style acting in hit drama Love Game in Eastern Fantasy. Dai Lu Wa also got a secondary boost in that viewers prefer her romance arc with second male lead Chang Hua Sen over the main couple’s romance story. This hasn’t sat well with Bai Lu’s strong fandom which has taken to attacking her as one of those usurper second lead actresses who wheedled her way to better costume, makeup, and additional scenes in order to overshadow Bai Lu.

Your comment isn’t supported by facts. Firstly, they both started around the same time in the entertainment industry around 20216/17. Secondly, Bai Lu is 3 (!) years her senior. Not generation Thirdly, Bai Lu is objectively more beautiful than Dai Lu Wa.
How is Dai Lu Wa younger and fresh, if in fact she is a little longer acting than Bai Lu?

It’s probably the amount of exposure. Dai Lu Wa feels fresh because most audience aren’t aware of her in her previous dramas.
I agree with Lilith. Bai Lu suffers from overexposure. The audience is tired of her. Plus, she’s been consistently acting in Xianxia dramas over the years so the audience is fatigued. In contrast, Dai Lu Wai is a fresher face and she mixes up her roles, so viewers are more welcoming. Bai Lu should take longer breaks between projects and switch up her roles and genres in order to break up viewer fatigue. I don’t believe she’s less talented but she is indeed stuck in a rut. And it doesn’t help that her male lead is uncharismatic and doesn’t have the gravitas to completely sell the role. Not much chemistry between them.
I’m a little surprised that Chinese viewers prefer the second couple over the main couple. I thought Chong Zhao had the weakest characterization of them all.

Her character was so much more entertaining to me. Who doesn’t love a bad girl breaking all the norm away from the typical righteous leading lady? But then her character turns out to be a good person and the story becomes stall for me. Leading man has been limited by making him forget & becomes the shadow under leading lady. We don’t like our leading man weak.
I don’t find myself excited for this drama, but it’s serviceable. I’ll walk away w/ this drama having a new actress to route for.
I didn’t make it far into this drama because I didn’t like the writing, but I agree that the 2FL bad girl character with a heart was more interesting. I don’t think the actress is better or worse in acting than the others. The secondary couple had a bit more tension with the 2ML being her opposite by being the self-righteous dude with the stick up his butt.
Also, Bai Lu had already broken out in previous similar works, so she can’t really break out again. The fans should be asking Bai Lu’s agency to stop overworking her.
Congrats to Dai Lu Wa for getting some recognition after almost a decade in the business. I first saw her Plough Department playing a somewhat annoying FL. Speaks to how important landing the right role with the right writing is.
I love when those more competent SFL actresses highlight how limited those overpaid mid liulang are. Last year it was Ju Jing Yi. This year it is stale Bai Lu. Who’s next ?

No, for sure Dai Luwa has waaaaay more acting chops than Bailu. She is charismatic and knows her angles and when to slow her facial reactions and when to speed it up. I didn’t recognize her at all as the spoiled bratty princess from Lost You Forever. For that, she’s already levels above Bailu. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again – Bailu is a traffic star. She has great audience reception, but acting wise leaves a lot to be desired. I’m really excited about Dai Luwa now and hope to see more of her projects.
And no, this has nothing to do with her characterizations. Yes badass women are niche and loved, but fact is, she’s been able to pull off characters completely opposite in personality. It’s a joy to watch. She’s the gem of this production – 100%!
Dai LuWa sure did well, but you err when you compare her acting with BaiLu or claim she has better acting chops than BaiLu.
I do agree that BaiLu does need to improve her acting as that’s what actors need to constantly do, including LuWa.
Although Dai Luwa played her cold character well and had good expressions, she struggled to invoke some certain emotions well, such as pain and sadness. It was a bit lackluster and unbelievable. But that’s just her weakness which can be improved.
You can praise LuWa but try not to compare her to BaiLu as you give people a reason to highlight her weakness.
Nope, I am not erring at all. I’ve maintained from the very beginning that Bailu is not great acting material, and this is not to knock her to say she can’t be serviceable (she can be watchable), but to excel and own her character – I’m not convinced. I’ve watched a few of her dramas and I’ve been impressed by none. I’ve only watched 2 of Dai Luwa’s series, and she’s impressed me twice. But different strokes for different folks. Ive been watching dramas for decades, so I am very picky about acting. My criteria about acting can be different from everyone else’s and I’m cool with that.
So will this inspire Bai Liz’s boss to give her a change of pace to her roles now. This seems to happen a lot for xianxia that even the best of actresses get flack because even though they are pretty but at times get criticized because they seem too old to pull off certain idol dramas. I guess c- netizens like fresh face looks for these dramas. But the fact the second leads have better screen time and better costumes would not be the actresses fault but the directing, script production and company’s fault as they are the ones who run the show. The ire and jealousy of her fans only make Bai Lu look bad. They are not helping her career in doing this. I hear also that most people prefer the second couple due to better chemistry but I gave up the drama after 5-6 episode cause it just did not gel for me. It was a bit meh for me.
Her role was superb, she had weakness,she had emotionns ,she was evil and kind, she had a past ,her character make it easy to connect with, and she kept revolving throughout the drama, Baillu character like most of character ,strong and immortal tah tah ah all evil are dead , a character that you bored of after seeing it few times.

LuWa, Ao Rui Peng, Huasen and Zhang Xin are definitely the breakout actors of Moonlight Mystique. BaiLu is an actress that has already gotten her breakout. It is also a lie that Bailu fans are angry that Luwa got the attention.

It’s gonna be like My Journey To You all over again where second leads story has better story than the leads. If DLW get bigger after this drama, trust me that BL fans will keep picking this drama for years
I will root for DLW because I like her from Calorie Boy. She’s good in the drama and the drama itself is fun. You guys definitely should watch it
I love Bai Lu but I have to say that I love the second leads because their storyline is much more interesting. Dai Lu did amazing in this drama and has chemistry with Huasen. I hope for a future drama of these two. They are so cute! Overall it wasn’t a bad drama.

I think all the actors are doing fine. It is the writing that is awful. I am struggling to watch each episode and I particularly dislike BL character.
