iQiyi Period C-drama Spring of the Blade with Xu Kai and Zhou Ye Premieres to Average Reception with Acting and Chemistry Criticism
Over the weekend saw the premiere of new iQiyi period romance and revenge C-drama Spring of the Blade (一瓯春 Yi Ou Chun) adapted from the same name web novel. Starring Xu Kai and Zhou Ye, the drama is so far off to an average start. The highest it has hit is 8000 within the streaming portal so far and probably won’t go much higher if the first impression reviews are to be believed. There are more criticism than positive feedback with criticism centered around the stiff acting of both leads especially Zhou Xu, a particularly far-fetched plot, and cold chemistry so far with the two stars. The female lead’s revenge plotting is being called so lame and dumb and require the antagonists to also react in stupid ways to make it happen. And making the two leads work together feels like such an artificially construction connection. Lastly, Zhou Ye has once again gotten more buzz in this drama for mockery on her bad acting with a meme video going around of her “crying” scene that is being called soooooo bad for how she’s trying to show sad emotion but failing because it’s clear she doesn’t want to also look unpretty onscreen hence the awkward crying.

Zhou ye looks like a fun person in real life but she single handled ruined Legend of the female general for me. Her character was so amazing in the novel but her stupid DuDu ruined it for me.
Anyway not sure how she keeps getting roles.
Omg, her DuDu was so annoying, I couldn’t take it anymore and dropped it around episode 14.
She has one of the strongest backers in cent, that’s how.
If you have a solid backer like senior actress Li Bingbing, there’s no need to put in the effort to study and develop your characters. After all, you can be pretty sure another project will come your way quickly, even when the dramas you’ve led within the past year have performed below expectations.
I was so hyped looking at the poster thinking it might even come even a little close to novel female lead and it’s buzz was also everywhere but damn she really ruined the whole character for me with her so called gret acting performance .
I am not watching it, because after three dropped dramas with the FL, the worst offender being her acting in The Legend of the Female General, I have decided to avoid her dramas. But I did come across the said clip with the crying scene on reddit. If it was fake crying, it would have been fine. But apparently it was supposed to be real crying? Or maybe it was the dubbing that didn’t match? Whatever it was, that clip was really bad.
Ut seemed more like a comedy parody. Yeah dubbing was unfortunately her own. So that’s why people are saying now who will her team and fans point finger at for her worse acting because they can’t blame a voice actors as for this it’s hers own.
i said zy’s acting was terrible and i didn’t want to watch. somebody say you’re mean and she’s not so bad. well, look what happened. let’s be honest personal charism can save you from criticism. she have neither. xk improve his acting in eight hundred. he should choose his project better. his biggest issue
Yu Zheng likes working with Hesong artists. I don’t think Xu Kai had much say in that.
Well apparently when anyone comments on her acting, her fans starts saying atleast she is pretty.Like as if being pretty will always compensate for her bad acting. Better give those roles to deserving ones than wasting on hers.
And i don’t know why her team always make comparison of her and zhang jingyi. I am not fan of any but atleast the other girl can act for damn sure although they belittle her for her looks (i can’t with their beauty standard) calling her SEA as slang for mockery.
Zhou Ye is notorious for her 五官乱飞 acting meaning her five facial features are flying all over the place. I think she got lucky with her breakthrough role in Better Days: the character Wei Lai just happened to be the type of role that Zhou Ye could do convincingly but all her subsequent acting since that role has shown marked decline.
But that was not even big deal as she has naturally such cold looks in normal days so i don’t think she showed any great acting there, moreover the leads carried the movie but she got all praise for nothing .You can see such role being portrayed greatly by even child actors by any in kdramas.
I dont think its as bad as everyone is making it out to be. It’s not a great drama and hard to compare to Against the Current, which is very excellent, but its interesting and has likeable characters.
Thanks for the review. Have a good day
I’m enjoying Against the Current tremendously.
I really liked Zhou Ye (and all the cast) in the very polarizing drama, Scent of Time. As for Xu Kai, I loved him since Arsenal Military Academy but most of his other dramas are meh (too many filler arcs and filler characters). His performance in Eight Hundred was superb and if he continues going that path, he can be an acclaimed actor someday.
I like Zhou ye regardless of her acting. I like her natural pretty looks and I like her low profile simple personality. I used to like xu kai in good boy roles… but his recent news or scandals made me less excited about him …. And the novel isn’t interesting for me. But I will probably watch 1-2 episodes and then see how. Any better dramas to recommend lately? Thanks!
There is a lot of miscasting in C-dramas, and it looks like this drama is no exception. I haven’t watched it yet since neither lead appeals to me by default, so I can’t say for sure. However, I do think Zhou Ye was a clear miscast for Legend of the Female General, even though she was decent in Back from the Brink. Similarly, while Tan Songyun is fantastic in Against the Current, she felt out of place in The Unclouded Soul. I’m using these two actresses to illustrate a broader point: even highly regarded actors can end up in roles that don’t suit them, while more pedestrian actors can occasionally deliver solid performances under the right circumstances.
Why no mention of the latest hit c-drama Against the Current? It is so well made! To think Xu Kai and Tan Song Yun were leads in another drama.. and now competiting in separate dramas. I’ve watched a few Zhou Ye dramas and I think she looks pretty. But I prefer the drama Against the Current. Tong Hua is one of the screenwriters for that drama. Made sense why it’s so good..
I’m also enjoying AtC! Spring of Blade has some pretty looking leads, but it’s really lacking in a lot of departments. I just need to throw reason, logic, and baseline expectations of acting out the window to watch it. Zhou Ye is really hard to watch for emotional scenes, even in Scent of Time. Xu Kai has proven he can act better than what he delivers in idol dramas, but he seems fully aware he doesn’t need to.
People watch Zhou Ye not because of her acting prowess and that will be the case for many of her dramas to come. For producing a drama, she’s a solid investment, especially for an idol drama with a so-so script, even if her acting is subpar.
