  2. China’s laws are messed up.

Look at this murderer Yang Xu Wen out and about raking in money instead of being cancelled and punished for murder.

Remember the name of the victim, Ren Jiao!

    • Please don’t spread false rumors. There was no conclusive evidence behind her death. Even if he came from privilege background, I don’t think the media or the authorities would let him get away with it.

I find it crazy that he wants to be back on screen knowing that people will bring this topic up again.

    • C’mon, you’re accusing the guy without any proof.
You’re lucky you’re not in China because you’re saying the authorities in China failed due to bribery, corruption and etc. This kind of claim do gives loads of trouble for people.
Message to Fans of any idols. Your idols have enough money to pay up and get away unscathed from anything including murder.

  3. I thought Strange Tales II would never make it to Koala, as it feels like it’s greatly underrated among the international audience! Glad it’s not the case :)))

It’s one of my most favorite dramas this year — along with Heroes and To The Wonder. I loved the first season, and am thrilled that the 2nd season is fantastic and solidified my love for the series and the characters. It’s a rare case to have a sequel doing equally well, both critically AND commercially. The opening douban rating was actually 8.1, and over the course it climbed to where it’s at now (8.4). Without much fanfare, it’s been topping the chart for the past two weeks and gave iQiyi a room to breathe LOL. Dashing Youth has been tailing along, and we’ll see if it will follow suit as their douban rating is not out yet.

What fans love about Strange Tales is apart from the stories, the main characters and their relationship (with cast’s great chemistry with each other), is the guest roles. Each case features different guest characters (the non-main) whom most were well-loved. The stories are not just police procedural, but touch on human aspects.

Oh well, I’ll stop gushing here. Looking forward to the 3rd season!

    • I totally agree with you. The reason I enjoy it is also the very human aspect of each case. The coroner’s tale for example. Their status in society is so lowly, but they understand the importance of the role they play and take pride in it. They touch upon the unfairness and social injustices in the world through a fictional lens. There’s a couple of weaker cases, but some cases (like the last one) broke my heart.

The mystery-solving crew also don’t feel like “main characters” in the traditional sense. It’s more like an ensemble drama. Each mystery showcases a new set of “main characters” and their stories. In the sea of costume idol romance dramas, I’m glad there’s something like Strange Tales to break up the monotony.

      • Agree with you on the coroner’s death case! And I really like the conclusion of the case, with the widower following his path. It also looks like a setup for another case on S3? But the guest characters were already on S1 too, so it perhaps would be a little much.

I’m hoping to see again some characters back on S3, such as the fake detective and the fake priest/actual sheriff (he’s a hottie, hehe).

      • @lenje, I actually did like how some people “carried” on the legacy of the people that passed. Like the last case too!

Admittedly, I totally got tricked into believing the innkeeper was into the fake priest/actual sheriff because I thought he was pretty good looking too hahaha.

I also really enjoyed how they weaved a lot of actual historical stuff into the story this season. I feel like I learnt a lot!

  4. I’ve only read great comments and reviews of STOTD but I’m avoiding dramas with more than 30 episodes like the plague.

    • With it being about cases, and there being eight cases, just watch the drama per case, like a weekly procedural TV show. You could then break this up into 8 dramas :).

  5. I’ve watched the first half of season 1 but dropped it. It’s good but i just eagerly needed romance story. But good for them.

About his past scandal. I think, China’s laws is strict enough tho. Look at Kris Wu or those actors with tax or other scandals, they all got canceled. If this one were a murder, you think, they’ll let him live freely??? No no no. Media will be bombarding him with the evidence and facts.

    • Kris Wu got away with it for years. He even won lawsuits against his victims.

In the end, too many people put pressure on the government and they couldn’t avoid it but he is actually a great example how money does help you be above the law.

      • Im not staying in China, and i thought it’s slightly different from other countries. But well, corruption happens all the time. I live where even there’s evidence, the police wont catch the criminal unless you pay amount of money. Not to mention the entertainment world. The problematic ones get more popular bcuz of their attitude. Even Seungri is still accepted in my country. Sigh. But then corrupt people everywhere tho.

  6. People are naive to think China is all about strict law that’s carried out regardless of who might have committed the crimes. No. That’s not the case all the time. I should say, that’s not the case most of the time. Power, connection, and money do work way more in China than anywhere else in the world.

Tennis player Peng Shuai! And many other examples.

The drama is boring anyway. LOL

    • The ML in thus show has at some point been interrogated in connexion to the suicide (?) of an actress he had a fling with (seen entering a hotel with her in a reportingly amorous mood, next thing we know she fell off the balcony of the hotel room and died). As far as I know, charges were never pressed against him. I personally am against canceling actors (unless they are the likes of Chris Wu) and I choose to believe that if charges were not pressed it is because he was proven innocent. I can even feel sorry for him – imagine having a thing for a person and that person ends up killing themselves (even implicating you to some extent). BUT. The death of this poor girl aside, the whole sleeping around/one night stand thing would be enough to cancel other actors. Think of the ML from The Spirealm who was canceled for allegedly cheating on his (as it turned out non existent) girlfriend – he has been in a hiatus since 2020 and has only acted in a handful of dramas – he got recently got kicked out from the ridiculous looking Fu Shan Hai drama posted here below, due to the demands of Cheng Yi’s fans. Or, I don’t know, Angelababy was semi-canceled for attending one cabaret show in Paris. So, I do wonder.

      • I read somewhere the girl body was found naked down the street adjacent to the hotel building.
Her death looked strange and til date there several question marks about what really happened over there.

  7. @Urgh – Yang Xu Wen was investigated and cleared, so I don’t know why you posted that news in here. If he’s a murderer, I’m pretty sure the c-netz would have him cancelled by now.

@lenje – I agreed with your post, the great thing about all of the guest characters are that they’re not just popping to serve the storylines but they’re very fleshed-out. I’m also very excited about season 3.

    • The guest characters left deep impression, characterization is written and acted well! AvenueX said she’s planning a video on some real things from the Tang Dynasty featured in the series, like a coroner method. Can’t wait!

  8. Just finished this series. Never heard of it, never thought cdrama was about stories and storytelling since The Double just reaffirmed my belief in everything wrong with cdramas. Got bored so I watched it and never heard of s1. First few ep.was hard, thought the acting of 2 guys were so meme like but stuck with it and it kept getting better and better. The pace got better, the storytelling never let up, the way the actors utter their lines reminded me of good old cctv days and the sets and all were impressive. For once I felt tang fashion is wearable. Some stories stuck with me and it ended on a high with a great last story before the politics take over in the last 15 minutes. Honestly, rare to have a cdrama so full of heart and with resolutions that humans with a heart and brain will agree. It is intelligent and thought provoking and most of all, a good story so well told, in surprised the douban rating is not a high 9 when many rubbish superhits were just drama queen without much substance. A rare gem this one and so happy I watched.
