This is about as big female lead idol type C-drama as you can get, what with Tian Xi Wei not just playing the female protagonist but the same face female antagonist in Youku period drama Where the Mask Ends. It’s like she went “I got 1/5th the screentime as the male lead in Guardians of the Dafeng, fuck that I’m going the opposite and taking allllll the screentime lol!” Mask premiered this Friday to what I would say not a lot of promotion but Pursuit of Jade also dropped with the same general vibes and went on to slay the ratings and views so there is still plenty of time to see if this drama delivers another win for her and makes it back-to-back. I should mention the male lead is Yan An here, elevated to first billing on the male side but from all the promos and posters it’s basically a glorified male vase role where it’s female story line centric and he’s just the most important male character in a world of female schemers. Early reviews are mixed, calling it heavy handed in execution and delivery and Tian Xi Wei does better as the good girl poor character and overacts as the bitch baddie character.
