This looks like a promising enough office place situational comedy, and one that isn’t currently all over the networks like medical or legal dramas. Upcoming KBS Wed-Thurs drama Chief Kim released first stills recently showcasing male leads Namgong Min as the titular Chief Kim and idol-actor Junho of 2PM as his office rival. A year ago this drama would have gotten way more attention as coming from the screenwriter of Good Doctor, except his followup Blood was dreadfully bad in new and innovative ways.
This one looks like another directional change for the screenwriter, taking on a work place drama where the male lead is an enforcer for a loan shark gang turned office accountant sectional chief and leading the charge to turn a company around. Namgong Min has been playing too many baddies recently but has got a great understated comedic timing. This time his romantic lead is Nam Sang Mi, returning from marital hiatus, with Jung Hye Sung as the second female lead. Chief Kim premieres on January 25th.
I can’t help but think he may turn into a serial killer or engage in violence the moment he turns his face away. He’s that good as a villain. He had a career rejuvenation after taking on such roles. I still have the problem trying to identify with his quirky roles in his last drama, and now he’s taking on a similar role.
“…except his followup Blood was dreadfully bad in new and innovative ways” hahaha! Namgoong Min is so entertaining in comedies that I think it’ll be okay as long as the script isn’t as bad as Blood’s was.
(Btw, it’s Namgoong, not Namgong.) Happy New Year, Koala!
Namgoong Min is HILARIOUS and he has great comedic timing! He really surprised me and I’m not very impressed with him as an actor. I actually much prefer him in comedic roles and I’m glad he broke out of being typecast as a villian just in time. Really looking forward to this!
Why “Namgong” throughout the piece? The transliteration of his family name 남궁 is Namgoong.
I hope it’s different from his role as Ahn Dan Tae.
