Newbie Actress Yang Yu Tong Gains Buzz Taking on Iconic Crytal Liu Character of Zhao Ling Er in the New 2023 Remake of Chinese Paladin
There are two Chinese Paladin dramas in the works, the latest version of the RPG game is being made into the C-drama Sword and Fairy with Xu Kai and Yu Shu Xin (Esther Yu), but the OG Chinese Paladin that was the C-drama in 2006 that launched Hu Ge‘s career and cemented Crystal Liu as the fairy goddess of all time is being remade with the same characters of Li Xiao Yao and Zhao Ling Er with a slightly tweaked story. TBH the drama called Paladin Legend it looks terrible from the teaser preview I watched but I think this is a throwaway drama that has enough IP recognition to gain viewers and perhaps used to launch the careers of the fresh-faced leads and main supporting cast. He Yu plays Li Xiao Yao and Yang Yu Tong is Zhao Ling Er, he’s sufficiently earnest but she’s getting raves from visuals alone in the drama stills for matching up to Crystal’s early aughts looks. I don’t disagree and it will be interesting to see if she can launch an entire career from one iconic role alone.

Everyone is pretty and CG looks good, love the costumes. Looking forward to this for the story because in comparison I still can’t forget Hu Ge and Crystal Liu, on top of Chinese Paladin having some of my favorite OSTs.
Male lead doesn’t look cheeky enough from the teaser. Hu Ge’s Xiao Yao, I hated him and loved him at the same time. If I didn’t know any better, it’s hard to distinguish who is supposed to be Ling Er from the teaser. Crystal Liu’s Ling Er was so eye catching because of her sweetness & coldness and beauty, I simply don’t think she can be matched.
This remake will be more similar to the original game.
Nobody cares for a CP1 remake (at least CP 4 & 6 are new stories and Xukai’s CP 6 is getting hype due to Esther Yu), and Yang Yutong is not going to outdo Crystal Liu’s version no matter what. Idk why you want to claim there is hype for this…
Yang Yutong already got her breakout moment in Crime Crackdown where she got tortured by the main villain and killed herself. Wish she got a better role than a CP1 remake where cnetizens will say both leads compare unfavorably to Crystal Liu and Hu Ge.
She’s pretty, not beautiful like Crystal but much better than Michelle.
OMG I did not watch chinese paladdin 2006. Around that time all I watch is K drama. these days all I watch is c drama. Is it still relevant now? Should I watch it or just wait for this remake?
You probably may find the cg effects outdated? It’s considered a classic drama mainly because it’s part of many c-netz’s childhood. Both Chinese Paladin 1 and 3.
CP1 was one of my first cdramas, so I am clearly bias. She’s taking on a very iconic role. I remember being in awe of how beautiful and cute Ling Er was. In addition to Liu Yifei, there’s An Yixuan, Jiang Xin, and more. These new girls are pretty, but very large shoes to fill. And no one can replace Eddie Peng as Tang Yu (sorry newbie). I’m sure the CGI will be better. This is definitely for a newer audience that perhaps hasn’t seen the first version.
Oooh I hope they don’t waste Esther’s talents in the crappy sequels. Well, at least she gets to waste it with a top billing actor like Xu Kai (I’m still unsure if I’ll like him.) As for the newbie actress, as long as she’s a good actress, she’ll do fine. I’ve never been impressed by LYF’s looks or her acting so as long as the newbie can surpass in acting, I’m game.
