My Journey to You Second Female Lead Lu Yu Xiao Breaks Out with Excellent Acting Going Toe to Toe with Yu Shu Xin

I feel like I won a double prize when watching My Journey to You. First was overcoming my allergy to female lead Yu Shu Xin (Esther Yu) and getting to enjoy both her acting and her natural voice for the first time ever in a fantastic dark role in a well plotted drama. The second win is finding the unexpected treasure that is the second female lead Lu Yu Xiao, she’s actually been a smaller supporting role in two other summer dramas The Longest Promise and Love You Seven Times and she didn’t catch my eye at all in those roles. But here she’s a revelation, she debuted only in 2021 and very young but her acting has depth and nuance and she commands quite a presence onscreen. Everyone expected Yu Shu Xin to be great here and she is so the surprise is Lu Yu Xiao, and the two ladies as rival assassins have lots of scenes together and they spark onscreen in tension and chemistry. On a side note, Lu Yu Xiao looks so much like Lee Sung Kyung I did double takes, with a dash of Park Joo Hyun thrown and her looks are quite refreshing in this sea of young C-actresses trying to stand out.

My Journey to You Second Female Lead Lu Yu Xiao Breaks Out with Excellent Acting Going Toe to Toe with Yu Shu Xin — 16 Comments

  1. Thanks for the recommendation. Sounds like an interesting plot with strong female characters and good to know Esther Yu’s acting has improved a lot.

    • Both her and Esther are crazy good. The difference is in the roles they play. They are both evenly matched but the ML is too weak. He’s like a lost little boy in an adult drama. Every other character is better than him but it might also be how the character is written because ZLH was pretty good LBFAD. Haven’t seen him anything else.

  2. watched her in other contemporary webseries berfore, where she was pleasant enough… but boy oh boy is she a revelation here. the layers of acting – switching from innocent white rabbit to sinister assassin with just a slight change in expression. twitch of the brow, lifting of gaze… i hope she gets more meaty roles in future. can i also say i love the stylistic approach to this drama, everything looks so lux and gorgeous, yet understated enough to be rooted in reality (unlike the gravity defying headdresses of some recent dramas). never got the hype over guo jing ming as a director but boy, does he have a discerning aesthetic eye.

  3. I’m thinking why not they replace her with one of Song Zuer’s unaired dramas. Those famous established actresses won’t fill in for the tamed roles/dramas. It’s better for talented but underrated actress to take the job instead. She’s gonna be perfect for FL role of the prisoner of beauty.

    • Because she is a relative unknown (iirc she’s a fashion student who studied in UK and entered the industry via connections as her mum is a CEO) and the prisoner of beauty drama is carried by the FL, in other words they need to promote the drama to get advertisers with the FL’s name/resume. Either way Lu Yixiao is not considered a beauty by cnetz so she will get criticised if she takes the role https://m.bilibili.com/video/BV18N411v7xK people have been AI editing Cecilia Cheung, Jiang Qinqin, Gillian Chung, Ning Jing, Zhao Jinmai, Yang Mi, Zanilia Zhao’s features onto Song Zuer’s face/acting and that should give you an idea of what people want lol. Ju Jingyi https://m.bilibili.com/video/BV1uu4y1Q7kX and Yang Chaoyue https://m.bilibili.com/video/BV1cu411P7YL look a bit weird, because they simply are idols more than actresses. Whoever reshoots will be called not pretty enough unless they look like Wang Churan or Zhou Ye… It’s not worth it so it’ll reshot by a post90 actress with some clout to withstand criticism but no schedules (e.g. Sun Yi or Chen Duling) after a few years like Lin Gengxin doing Golden Hairpin. That’s if Zuer is really buried too since this project was her new agency’s welcome gift to her joining them…

  4. She’s super good at emoting. The whole cast is doing AMAZING. I like the refrained Esther Yu performance. From the trailer, I thought the FL was gonna be an epic badass who has everything figured out, but I like that she’s a Tier 1 assassin thinking on her toes. The ML is supposed to play a blundering character working towards growth. He’s definitely delivering the dopey dude with a heart who will grow into an epic guy. I honestly love when Chinese actors can get to the dopey level. Too many of them are just good looking dudes who don’t, won’t, or can’t get down and dirty with their characters, so I like it when they’re not afraid to be imperfect. Besides the main cast, dude, all the male side characters… ooOwee!!

I’m a chronic fast forwarder, but I haven’t fast forwarded through anything so far. The acting, visuals, and storytelling pacing are all engaging thus far.

  5. Her character didn’t stand out much in Love You Seven Times, but that didn’t stop my initial reaction of her was that she was a beautiful actress.

  6. I started to love her acting in to ship someone drama. After I watch her acting in this drama, I started to follow the drama my journey to you and fall in love with her character again. Even though, she is not the main character and her character is different with her character in the drama to ship someone. But it shows that her acting is really good to play all kinds of character. Love you lu yu xiao😍 Waiting for more of her drama in the future!

  7. Dang Lu Yu Xiao’s young! 23 only. Impressed. Also impressive is that they casted her as the opponent/ally of Esther who has much greater seniority and experience. But she held her own! Her ability to just hold a dang tear in one eye at a moment’s notice really makes her character shine. Out of the two FLs, she’s much more interesting as a character, e.g. she’s more morally gray and willing to sacrifice others to reach her goals, but we can see she’s protective of Esther’s character (I’m betting she’s the younger girl who was originally with Esther when they went thru assassin training.) It makes her a much more complex role, because on one hand she doesn’t want to let emotions and relationships control her, but on the other, she has a soft spot for certain people. Plus her manipulative smarts makes her stand out. It’ll be interesting to see how she falls in love with the SML when she’s so cunning and coldhearted.

Esther as the main FL is not as nuanced. We know she doesn’t want to harm the innocent, and she doesn’t have ambitions to achieve anything other than gain her freedom. She still has a heart and although she’s manipulative as well, she’s not to the extent of Lu Yu Xiao’s character. As the Mary Sue, she will fall in love with ML. Maybe she will end up being the coldhearted one, but I doubt it

  8. Esther done a really good job here..a dark mysterious clueless female character which she nailed it..of course people who said the second lead female is better because of her character, she have a psycho part which she have to delivered many emotion in one scene..the character itself is different ..the only that same is they were both assasins, its like watching a batman film and compare the batman and the joker..ofc u will said joker have a good acting skill, its funny right..same thing goes to male lead..first of the episode he have to portray his childish action, his rash decision etc etc..when you compare with the appearance of the 2nd lead u will blow by his dark character..its nothing wrong there falling with a bad boy, but u dont forget that the male lead doesnt finished to portray her character ..so please stop the comparing thing okay just enjoy the beauty of the story

  9. Can someone enlighten me as to why the main leads/characters are getting dislikes? I find their characters very sweet and relatable. I dont want to be watching a toxic couple covered in so many clouds of lies where I have to keep on constantly guessing if they’re being truthful to each other, especially the 2FL. Her character is so fake. She only loves herself. Of course, I thoroughly enjoyed their chemistry, but I do not like their relationship at all. It’s so toxic.
