MBC Sageuk My Dearest Part 1 Ends with Series High 12.2% Ratings and Howls of Anger From Fans with the Direction of the Story

I don’t know if I would be okay with how this drama ended its first part 10-episode run this weekend but the vast majority of the audience feedback are angry complaints. MBC serious romance sageuk My Dearest wrapped a short 10-episode first part run this weekend, with part 2 coming in October, and the ratings are a drama high of 12.2%. But viewers are frustrated that the leads are apart at this juncture of the drama reportedly the female lead is marrying another guy and the male lead is off crossing paths with a new female character. I feel like it’s just misdirection to create conflict and tension so there is actually a getting back together path in part 2 of the drama but it’s clearly upsetting the loyal fans so hopefully the drama doesn’t lost a chunk of the audience next month when it returns.

  1. I really do not understand why this had to be split in two parts, especially when the ratings are good and MBC does not actually have anything to air in the timeslot (recaps will be aired for the next two weeks, then the Asian Games at the end of the month). Has MBC not learned from the examples of The First Responders and The Uncanny Counter?

  2. Honestly, the love story was very frustrating since the beginning. The FL being very immature and the ML being too casual with her. But after the war, I thought both of them would have understand the situation and became more mature, but no… My favourite scenes were when they’re not together.

The dream scene looked like the FL crossed the seasons of her life and found the ML once both are dead…

I’m still hoping for a happy ending :p

  3. Iirc, some of the plot summaries of this drama called the female lead a widow so I’m guessing she does end up marrying someone else unfortunately.

  4. It’s seems to be based on Gone with the Wind, so that makes sense. It’s more realistic honestly if they don’t end up together immediately, heralding the true end of summer with some melodrama.

  5. I feel the anger of the fans stems from the fact that this drama was heavily marketed as a romance when it is not a romance drama. ML and FL are not interacting very much. FL was in love with another man for most of the first half of the drama, and not interested in ML. It’s just a historical drama, with love being a part of it, not the sole focus. If they had marketed it as one woman’s journey or one man’s journey through turbulent times I think people would not have been so upset. In this context, it made sense she turned him down and chose family. First, they still don’t really know each other. Second, through her experiences, she has grown up and she’s not that same selfish girl she once was. As just a historical drama exploring the lives of a group of people, this then becomes a cliffhanger where viewers can look forward to discovering if these 2 will perhaps meet again and maybe get together in future. But as a Romance drama, it was extremely frustrating since it is now the halfway point and the 2 main leads are still dancing around feelings and are still not together. Frankly, for me the ML desire for FL feels more like obsession and insta-love because that’s what is in the script rather than deep emotional connection, so the romance part wasn’t working for me, but I know many other viewers feel differently.

    • Agreed. I don’t understand why the male lead will fall so deep with female lead. Female lead falling for ML can understand as theres so much he has done for her. But FL likes another man and he wants a chance with her? Even a quarter? He is a smart man. Doesnt adds up.

    • I think it has to do with market’s little interest in non-romance saeguk? Feels like I haven’t seen one since Kingdom. All of those saeguk mostly takes upon light hearted take to story

Reminds me of how Love In The Moonlight were so much popular than Moon Lovers, because it’s much simpler and light hearted
