C-actress Tang Yan Gets Her World Stage Glow Up Attending 2024 Cannes Film Festival — 35 Comments

    • Oh pls. You had better be trolling with this statement of yours.

A gorgeous and talented lady can only succeed because she gets some charity by some guy she’s acquainted with?

Who do you think Hu Ge is in c entertainment and what exactly can he do for Tang Yan or any other actress?

      • You think too much…she herself had said in her interview how grateful she felt when Hu Ge suggested her for the role…They are long time friends and he knew her well. He knew she would suit the role. Even thru she felt very pressured as she was worried she could not do well, he supported her with confidence.

And what is wrong with helping and support friends/collegues in this industry. You must be naive to think even Top artistes do not get help thru connections. Trolling? You are just a negative person.

Charity??? Such a stupid comment, it is not called charity, it is called comradeship in China terms. Hu Ge also pull Liu Tao and his good buddy Chen Long for suitable roles in his projects.

  1. Yet another celebrity invited by a brand to go to Cannes. Do they think people don’t know? But I suppose not as embarrassing as Gong Jun strutting around there.

    • Why is it embarrassing? If you get invited and you go so what? They get excited and take pics so what? Are they arrogant about it? Opportunities come and go. Why not take a chance?

      • @Rero

It’s embarrassing that one of the most notorious terrible actors of cent is going to Cannes, a film festival, invited by a brand and strutting around as if he isn’t a complete flop even in cent land, while surrounded by actual starts who are there to promote their work.

Take a chance? On what? Do you live in some dream he will get some opportunity there? Lol wake up. He should go and take a few acting classes in China instead.

      • @lol he may not get opportunities abroad like Hollywood or whatever but for his own career which is in China he would. That’s where he is at no? Whether acting modeling or whatever that’s where he is. I did not mention that actor to begin with. Remember the article is about Tang Yan?🙃 I had no clue the actor you hate so much was there to begin with. Plus if these celebs were invited it means some one over there cared enough to let them be there and to them it’s an honor and perk. It’s not that serious goodness. I’m not fan of that actor but he is pretty lol it seems to matter a lot over there as in China and abroad too. What with brands inviting people there it does not seems to just be about movies. I’m sure the people there know it and do not think too hard about it like you. But grouping everyone together like that is a bit unfair. Whatever I’m just not hater on celebrities.

    • It is funny seeing the Asian celebrities here walking the red carpet as mannequins for this brand or that brand and their domestic media acting like it’s an achievement when they aren’t attending on any merit with regard to actual film talent or even because they love cinema.

It’s one thing if celebrities are attending to promote or sell a project, attend a discussion panel or something but a lot of them fly in just to model for a brand for five minutes on a red carpet for films they have no interest in and mostly won’t even understand. Most don’t even mention the films or even stick around to watch the film! I bet if you asked most of them they wouldn’t even know the name of the film they are on the red carpet for. It’s like a mockery of cinema at the biggest film festival.

  2. Yay, more media play. No one at Cannes GAF about any of the Korean or Chinese celebrities there outside of the big wig directors like Park Chan Wook.

  3. There may or may not be attention from others in the world, but who cares. As long as we are fans, then that’s what drives growth and consumption.

  4. She is very beautiful and also very tall but the red carpet dresses she picks are always so vanilla. I wish she would try some riskier looks like Crystal Zhang.

  5. Why blurring the background of the first pic? Cos it’s just too embarrassing to show ALL the cameras weren’t focusing on her but other directions? LOL. Cameramen just don’t care much about these Chinese attendees !!!

  6. Why so much hate and they are all from Asian people too? There’s actually Asian photographers and media as well. The attention should be for those with film debut there and for big int’l stars. But these stars from smaller countries or lesser int’l stars are invited because the Cannes festival are trying to stay relevant too. Even cinema in the US are not doing as well, any publicity is warranted. It’s great for the film industry. They are in the same industry. Their fans and local media will pick up on it ( like what koalas is doing here). Stop being so negative.

    • I don’t understand the has either. They were invited and so they went! I’d go too if they were going to dress me up to strut on the red carpet 😂. I’d post it on my FB page and play Big Fish in my little pond! It’s called having fun and enjoying the perks of being wanted and acknowledged.

    • I’m puzzled by the hate too. I wonder if the hate is specific towards Chinese actors and actresses or if other Asian celebrities (Korea, Japan, India, Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia etc) will also get the same comments?

I’m also curious if Dilireba or Xiaozhan will also get the same hate from these same commenters?

    • LOL. There’s no hate. Fans just can’t accept the reality ppl pointed out that C movies are still not up on the level to be on international stage unlike some Korean films that are recognized by international filming industry. Even Chinese actors were invited to the event, C movies have no significant markets outside China, unlike C dramas. That’s a fact with all the box offices as a proof. Since this post is about a Chinese celeb. It’s legit to note that apparently her first pic was blurred for plausible reason to avert awkwardness that she wasn’t anywhere close to be a spotlight in such an international event.

I think the wording like “hate” and “hater” has been abused among Asian drama fan circles. Fans have to learn to face reality rather than live in the rosy bubbles created by your own fantasy of all the glamor from these celebs just cos you enjoy Asian dramas more than Western dramas. Stop throwing shade on those who honestly speak of the facts.

If THIS had happened to XZ, I’d equally question the absurdity of blurring the background of his photo. LOL.

      • I could listed all the horrible comments netizen said from weibo and Viet entertainment but since u are the spokesperson for ‘no haters,’ and people are just abusing that terms… let’s not abuse it anymore. keep closing that mind set of yours.

Either way it doesn’t matter those celeb r the rich ones getting paid to go there & getting exposure.

      • Farewell My Concubine (a Pan d’Or winner), House of the Flying Daggers, Raise the Red Lantern, are all internationally recognized movies that came before Korean wave. I can’t name a Korean movie director which has an international household reputation like Zhang Yimou or Chen Kaige, for instance.

As for the box office, I won’t dispute you. But like many other comments across other posts on this blog have mentioned, China doesn’t have to rely on international audience for their movies to profit. But some Chinese movies made it to international box office, despite limited or even none showing in other countries. Yes, for the sheer number of their domestic shows alone.

      • @lenje, the heyday of Chinese films was already in the past. Not anymore with tightened censorship. To the contrary, the quality of Chinese movies has been steadily degrading for the past decade. Don’t reside on the history! The Chinese seem to have a fetish to magnify the past glory. We are living in the current and Cannes is always about the current films. How are those old films you mentioned relevant to what are produced today? It’s funny to mix them up without recognizing the lack of quality and artistry in Chinese films today, which is always what Cannes has been looking for in any production.

TBH, ZYM and CKG are the history already. They have no capacity nor freedom nowadays to recreate any memorable works as before. They are now irrelevant to the current league of prestigious film makers.

You can’t name a Korean movie director which has an international household reputation like ZYM or CKG?? LMAO. Excuse me! THIS shows how ignorant you are and prolly living in your own Chinese bubble! Bong Joon-ho, Parasite Director, won the most prestigious Oscar best director. Tell me he isn’t Korean! LOL.

Name some examples of Chinese films that have made it big in international box offices!!! Don’t include domestic ticket sales that we just don’t care!

      • But I’m not a fan the way you’re accusing those who are puzzled at the hate. I’m a drama fan first and celebrities only interest me if there is pretty fashion or gossip. I enjoy watching the bits of news of them overseas and certainly don’t care that general photographers don’t know them or care. I’m not into laughing or mocking these celebrities for that. I can understand the hard work it took them to get a brand behind them and that being asked by their sponsors to be at Cannes is certainly not an insult. It is a good thing. They weren’t asked to show up at a mall or some small avenue. This is Cannes and ANY photo op at Cannes is a good thing. Opportunities for foreign actors are hard to come by—be it a photo op in Cannes, an NBA celebrity All Stars game, or a torch bearing run for the Olympics. I say, take it and enjoy!

      • What I disdain for isn’t C celebs’ low exposure or low popularity to the West and international stage. But the fetish Chinese media and culture have to manipulate and spread fake information. Blurring the background of that photo is one example of such a blatant act to mislead fans to be gullible about the influence and glory of their idols overseas that they tend to gloat over Chinese SM. It’s a cheat!

It’s totally fine for any one invited to an international event to share their red carpet presence with the public. But be true to what it is. Don’t fake glamor and glory by blurring the background! LOL.

I love using sarcasm cos there’s no other way to change the kind of culture worshiping fame through fake information. It’s amusing to see how Chinese like to flaunt false pride so often. LOL.

The only Chinese presence in Cannes worth a mention is Jia Zhang-Ke’s film,, Caught by the Tide, which is selected for In Competition category. Everything else is reduced to nothing in substance.

BTW, my comments aren’t meant to target particular commenters. They are general opinions focusing on the matters being discussed in the posts or threads. I hope ppl don’t take it personally.

    • I don’t get the negativity either. It feels like envy at some point. Cannes is a big festival, and while the really important stuff is happening in the theater, a lot of stuff happens outside too, what with all the stars parading. Some are there to promote their work, some are there to boost their career, some to promote their sponsor, including fashion houses, and some maybe there for the fun of it, or because they are fangirling over bigger names that also attend. So what. Unless there are Asian actors who try to sell this at home as an artistic achievement to be at Cannes, I don’t see why we jave to hate them for being there as so many small to medium sized stars do.

  7. The dress and natural make-up looks really lovely on Tang Yan but her seems kind of straggly and messy compared to the rest of her polished look on the red carpet. The Weibo pics are pretty.

China is really increasing the presence at Cannes this year and promoting China cinema more than ever. China Film Pavilion flew in lots of C-celebrities and has held multiple events, panels, dinners and lots of red carpet appearances. They had Lea Seydoux as a guest at the Madame Figaro China dinner last night too.

Interestingly, South Korea usually has a big presence at Cannes but not this year.

    • Thank you for the interesting tidbits.
I appreciate these kind of comments, not nasty comments and skewed opinions.
Too bad Koala will probably never upgrade her blog to have upvotes/downvotes features.

  8. Well, Chinese movies are in competition this year at Cannes. There’s Jia Zhangke’s movie with Zhao Tao, a highly respected actress who won the Italian version of the Oscar and was named among the best actors of the 21st century by New York Times. Lou Ye’s movie is also there. Even Tong Liya and Eddie Peng, more mainstream artists have a movie in the Un Certain Regard section. So not everyone is there only for the clout. Surprisingly, no films from South Korea. As for who goes there, a record number of influencers from India were there. Tang Yan at the very least deserves to be at Cannes more than them. Indian media highlighted only the Bollywood stars and the influencers, not the South Indian actresses who actually are in a film that’s in the competition section after 30 years, no less.

  9. Tang Yan is surely more well-known than at least 95% of the rest of the other attendees walking the red carpet, full of influencers, rich people and couture clients (I hope they are at least industry investors). And Tang Yan definitely has more reason to be there than the Kardashians because I don’t recall any of them acting in anything. Lastly Tang Yan has an incredible smile and looks stunning, if anything, at the very least she’s a good reminder to everyone that Chinese women are beautiful (unlike the current crop of plain actresses preferred by the audience) which is what that long ass red carpet is for anyway.

Someone really needs to banish those influencers wearing ridiculous campy Chinese inspired outfits. They think they are cool because it’s trendy to promote traditional culture on an international stage but some of those outfits are plain OTT and fugly. You need to have FBB’s aura and finesse to toe that fine line between glamourous and just plain camp.

  10. If she got an invitation , i don’t see the problem . It means that’s really an international film festival , i don’t know about the others medias but in France people don’t know much about asian actors , the same goes for asians who don’t know french actors , only perhaps 3 big stars from the past . So the ones who are waited are the big names of US, Uk, . If China had an international film festival, our ( french)stars will meant nothing for them . That’s ok !

    • There’s no issue for anyone including her to attend the event. But blurring the background of the photo is a cheat to general public, specifically those who have no online access outside Chinese internet firewall. If you’ve ever visited some Chinese social media and seen how C netizens always gloating over their celebs’ fame and influence out of proportion, then you’d get my points.

It’s a culture that doesn’t take dishonesty and cheating seriously!

      • Culture that doesn’t take Diego dishonesty and cheating seriously? Seriously? Generalizing a nation of over a billion much? Didn’t someone else say that these actors were getting bad comments on social media, so which one is it? Be happy they’re getting trolled I guess…

  11. I’m surprised Tang Yan still looks the same in these pictures as I remember her.

It really goes to show how exaggerated the use of filters is in dramas nowadays and how fake the make-up styles have become. I really thought she got (bad) plastic surgery in the new trailer for her upcoming costume drama. Glad that’s not the case lol
