Period C-drama Against the Current Starring Tan Song Yun and Liu Xue Yi Releases First Character Stills
Seeing this first official character still of Tan Song Yun in her just started filming new C-drama gives massive The Sword and the Brocade energy and flashbacks. The drama is titled Against the Current (Chinese title 兰香如故 Lan Xiang Ru Gu which translates as Orchid’s Fragrance Remains) and is a female lead centric drama with Tan Song Yun being paired with Liu Xue Yi and also adding scene-stealer Li Meng as the second female lead. These stills look great because no one is ridiculously airbrushed and the hair and costumes are lovely in a low key more realistic way.
LXY is just ridiculously handsome in hanfu. That is all.
Don’t care for either lead but will have to check out the drama for Li Meng. She was seriously stunning in The Double.
I hope this is a good production for all the team. Looking forward to this.
Im really hopeful for this one because of leads and having them as pairing in a costume drama together!

Seven Tan is not pretty enough for this role…she’s cute, but not devastatingly beautiful like described in the novel. I hope the script makes changes here that will adjust to this difference, otherwise I’m going to need major suspension of belief to ‘see’ the beauty.
I actually really like Liu Xue Yi; I think he’s adorable as well. And conventionally handsome while not being ‘pretty boy.’ However, he needs to branch out into funny roles where he gets to be more like himself. He’s a goofy guy and while his image as a ferocious male lead can be believable, ultimately it’s not really him. Also the ML in this novel is a battle hardened warrior, while being lecherous lol. I can MAYBE see him as a general, but there’s no muscles… He is better suited as a gentleman and maybe wuxia roles, rather than general type. He doesn’t have that type of edge, though maybe his role here will change my mind.
Agree on her looks. I am fond of Seven but based on novel description, she does fall short. But I still hope this drama will do well… Seven Tan can carry the lead character well.
I really like these two main actors….exceptional actors. Look like they could have good on-screen chemistry.
I’m so excited to watch this. I love Seven’s acting a lot. She’s one of the few Chinese actresses who can wear several caps and play different roles with range. To me, she’s the best Chinese female actress I’ve watched so far and I’ve watched so many Chinese dramas. I’m not into fantasy as the story says something about it being fantastical but because she plays a lead role, I’ll watch. I love solid acting anytime, any day and she always delivers. She’s any screenwriters delight because she brings characters to life. And as for those who say she’s not devastatingly beautiful, I have this to say. Beauty is perspective. It’s not just about face, or height or weight, it’s grace and for this role, she wears it well. I’m looking forward to this and I pray it goes well for her and the team. I’ll watch by God’s grace.
