Chen Zhe Yuan and Liang Jie Find Romance in a War Zone in Posters and Preview for C-drama The White Olive Tree
So it was western Valentine’s Day this week and with it a bunch of modern romance C-dramas on deck released new posters. One of them was The White Olive Tree which I wasn’t even tracking but now am intrigued solely because it looks like a remake of Descendants of the Sun. But the drama is based on the same name novel so I guess it’s just the set up of a soldier in a war zone country falling for a reporter stationed there but a tragedy splits them up only to reunite back in China. The drama stars Chen Zhe Yuan and Liang Jie and will stream on iQiyi. The first teaser is straight out of DotS though with the two leads in slow mo looking at each other warmly as soldiers and medical personnel and the like go about their business around them.

I am looking forward to this drama. It seems different from other c drama offerings. Not the usual. Will see how it goes.

have always loved LJ and CZY gained alot of my goodwill from that drama with Shen Yue a few years ago so while I’m not enthusiastic about the drama adaptation (given that the source material’s author is the same as last year’s YangYang/WangChuRan horrorshow) I’ll be keeping an eye out for this!
The source novel wasn’t that bad actually, the drama just mess up
Fomh wasn’t definitely made for 40 ep too, so much ciller and they changed the plot too much
I anticipated Amidst a Snowstorm of Love and the trailers looked all good until the real drama came out as a bland but cringe-worthy romance. Huge disappointment. I don’t have high hopes for this one either. Both CZY and LJ can express. They both had past works that I enjoyed. But C writers and directors are not up to par in average most of the time. AaSoL is just one recent example.

I agree with you about AaSoL is boring. There is not much of a story. Basically they met, eat, eat and eat again. The only thing I enjoyed about this drama is the pool table games. They did very well on that part.
Totally agreed with your brief review. I fast forwarded most of the time at 3x speed LOL after realizing I was watching a way more boring dating life than my own. LOL. I only took the pool games seriously. Wu Lei was very convincing as a gifted pro player. He looked so cool at the pool tables LOL. Nothing other than that is worth a mention. The production team just wasted all the money invested in filming in Finland. Did they just take the whole filming crew and the cast over there for sightseeing, not doing their jobs? I wonder. LOL.
It seems that is the usual theme in the author’s books. Love Me Love My Voice is also all about staring, eat, eat, eat, kissing, and hardly any plot.

You are right. LM, LMV is basically all about eat, eat, eat again and kissing….
I actually enjoyed this one. And rarely skipped forward any scene. Lol. This kind of drama mostly wasnt really my cup of tea. Probably, bcuz of Wu Lei and JinMai. I couldn’t even finish Love My Voice and Hidden Love cuz pure romance genre wasnt really for me.

Most of the new C-dramas came out in 2023 – present are terrible. I’m shocked that these production companies were willing to pay for these projects. There are so many dramas released, but hardly anything good to watch. I don’t like watching bloody stuff – it eliminates some already also. I have been searching for old movies or dramas to watch lately.
Old dramas or movies? Any recommendation? I have watched some. Still, few are good though. But those which I consider good are really good, like Nirvana in Fire and the Untamed. In general, C drama’s slow pace isn’t up my alley.

@XZF, wow! That’s quite a list. I don’t recognize most of them. I basically have watched all the XZ’s dramas including the Untamed and Where Dreams Begin, the latter of which I consider pretty good too. It’s XZ who brought my attention to C-ent. Thanks for the list. I’ll check them out.

Zheng Yunlong is one of China’ Top musical actor but he is very mesmerising in Extraordinary Medic. I can see why he is great for stage performance.
