Success of Exhuma Remains Korean Box Office Outlier as 2024 Continues Disappointing Releases with Big Names Kang Dong Won, Ha Jung Woo, and Park Bo Gum All Flopping

A recent article on the state of the South Korean box office reveals that it’s been a terrible first half of 2024 so far heading into the end of June. Other than award winning and box office success Exhuma that kicked off the year with a bang, it’s been one flop after another and even the usual big names that succeed are not delivering viewers to the seats. This month Kang Dong Won had The Plot, Ha Jung Woo came back with Hijack 1971, and Park Bo Gum with a big cast released Wonderland. All three had bad reviews and are box office disappointments, and this happened to nearly all the domestic releases this year so far. K-netizens commenting on that article all say the same thing – if the movie was well written and directed they would go watch doesn’t matter the famous or not famous leads. Well there you have it, if you produce a good movie they will come, otherwise it’s crickets and even popular stars can’t bring in ticket sales on their star appeal alone.

  2. If you see the full list it’s surprising that only 2 movies have crossed 10 million: Exhuma and Roundup 4. Everything after that only has 1 million or so viewers. The gap between 2nd and 3rd place is almost 9 million. Wonderland flopping isn’t a big surprise. KDW hasn’t had a hit movie in years either. Everything he touches flops. Alienoid 2 was as incoherent as the first movie and it explains why KTR has given up on movies for now. Dramas have better reach and more popularity. Movie stars move to dramas and drama stars move to theatre. The industry might be a mess.

  3. It’s high time that entertainment industries learn how to manage their budget too. Stop throwing more money than required into making those movies unless money laundering is involved, some movies could have turned a profit if their budget was better managed.

    • One of the most common issue these production face is the increasing wage of actor, I wonder if the association or something will put a cap on it? Just like china does. It wouldn’t work I think, the one who raise the wage were OTT like netflix, disney that have uper hand in money

  4. The box office performance so far this year is extremely imbalanced. Other than Exhuma (unexpected hit) and The Roundup (franchise with guaranteed success) that both exceeded 10 million viewers, everything else is 1 million plus at maximum. There is no in-between at all. Other than the 2, only Ra Miran’s and Byun Yohan/Shin Hyesun’s movies managed to break even.

I think that people are still hungry for the cinematic experience, but since the tickets are so ridiculously expensive, most only watch the “safest” options in cinemas. Word-of-mouth is the key now rather than marketing. That’s why there’s a disparity, and movies with mixed/bad reviews become an automatic flop. I myself have only watched Inside Out 2 and Dune 2 in theaters this year, when I used to watch a ton of them pre-covid.

  5. Park Bogum can only do so much for a movie that he only has 10 minutes of screentime. They leaned on him & Suzy to do fan service for promotion when they really were supporting characters. Plus Bogum doesn’t have the movie industry cred like Kang Dongwon and Ha Jungwoo who both have back to back flops now.

  6. Kim go eun with her massive movie surpassed ur flop movie actress woozie lmaoo who can’t carry a single movie

  7. I remember suzy woozie fans claiming how she is face of wonderland and how she is approached first. Now don’t put flop on park bo gum when u wanted to credit her if it had became a hit. She is a flop movie actress

  8. Suzys movie break even point was three million admission and it didn’t even do 700l. Marie u were saying how she is bigger than Kim go eun lmao

      • My fave is more popular and bigger star than she can ever be. He carries his projects whether hit or flops. His flops do more than anything she did . She is a side piece. A showpiece. A prop. Nthng more. And her looks won’t help her anymore. She is a hasbeen finished decoration.lmao..my face is busy and booked with bigger projects. Such projects cast her as a decoration at best. That is her level

  9. Going to the movies just isn’t what it used to be. Unless you’ve got a really good movie and the word of mouth spreads, it’s way harder to succeed vs pre pandemic. As for star appeal, that’s always been the rule anyway. You get the initial hype but it won’t be sustained unless you have a good product. Same goes on the drama side too.

  10. Woozie fans were very brave in past. She is su,y a flop movie actress
Dont blame park bo gum. At those times her fans said how movie producers took her first. If it had succeeded. It would’ve been credited to suzy

  11. LOL, it seems there are a lot of Suzy haters, who waited their time to call her.
There a lot of actors with flop movies. I can say that almost every big actor/actress have flop movies in their career. It’s not a reason to badmouthing someone, just calm down.

    • Lmao it’s just one person hating, using different usernames. That Ady person is known here to be a big Suzy hater because she’s bitter that Suzy dated her precious oppar Lee Min Ho. She’s also known to hype up certain actresses while being utterly misogynistic towards those she hates (like Suzy). You can spot her by her terrible grammar and spelling lol.

      • Aww truth hurts woozies fan. She is flop movie actress. A showpiece. Saying this doesn’t make me misogynist. She can’t act and has nothing to offer besides her plastic looks. A prop

    • Her fans like u were getting brave in past
.mocked actresses like kim go win who has biggest hit of year
Suzy has countless flop movies and they said how she is first choice for wonderland. She is always a prop in movies. And now it backfired..you wanna wash away ur hands for.flop? Lmaoo she is just a showpiece

    • @Adyly @Showmepiese
Are you talking to yourself? You just wrote two comments from different accs in 11:01 and 11:04. Next time try harder🤣
“Someone badmouthed Kim Go Eun, so now I will be badmouthing Suzy”. That means that you’re not better, just the person at the same level, LOL.
I’m not Suzy fan, just amazed by your comments.

      • I m replying to two users in same thread. Please buy a brain if u can’t see the difference and no I don’t want to be bigger person. Woozie fans deserved this flop and slap..true successful actresses like kim go eun, kim tae ri , etc will keep going as top movie star

  12. Suzy’s casting was indeed publicized first, so it’s only natural that fans assumed she was the lead. Nobody is trying to shift the blame off of her because the movie ended up flopping. Results speak for itself and anyone with eyes can see that Tang Wei is the official lead with Bogum and Suzy sharing only 25% of the screen time combined. Hence, nobody has blamed them for its failure. If anything, common complaints are about the lack of Bogum and Suzy scenes when they were made to be the face of the movie.

Anyway, as I already said before, the results of this movie won’t negatively affect Bogum and Suzy. Even with just a glimpse of their chemistry, netizens are demanding another collaboration. Bogum himself has made it clear that he wishes to act with Suzy again, particularly in a melodrama and a musical. We will see them in a better project soon.
