First Look at the Olympians Turned Police Officers in jTBC Drama Good Boy with Park Bo Gum and Kim So Hyun
What perfect timing for jTBC to release its first still of upcoming sports and procedural drama Good Boy. It’s a drama revolving around medal winning retired South Korean Olympians who have become police officers and their intersecting stories. Park Bo Gum is a boxer and Kim So Hyun a sharpshooter so both have the athletic skills in the drama to transition to being a copy for sure. The supporting cast is also very strong with Oh Jung Se, Lee Sang Yi, Heo Sung Tae, and Tae Won Seock. Directing is the PD of The Good Bad Mother and Beyond Evil with the script by the writer of Bring it On Ghost and Life on Mars.

All of them look like nerd and they stand there together look funny. Feel like it more comedy genre and i love it 😂
Kim SoHyun with short hair remind me with this years Korean popular shooter, Kim Yeji.
Looking forward to this…
Hi @HL, off of topic but i know that you like fashion and curently at Dior’s Gallery ,they exposed all the gowns , dresses,…that the stars wore at the Olympic Game ceremony… It took 1000 hours to make the gown that Celine Dion wore at the Eiffel Tower, Lady Gaga’s cabaret outfit , and many others … The little hands of haute couture did an amazing job .
I really wish Kim So Hyun did not have bangs for this one, it would look better. As for this drama, I am looking forward to this. I like the cast and even the director and the writer sounds good. Hope this one doesn’t disappoint.
When I read she’s going to have short hair here, I was hoping her hair would be more like Kim Ji Won’s in DoTS or like in her Hanyul CF around 2019: https://img.extmovie.com/files/attach/images/135/216/853/055/6cb916cd12d9f79214ecff1fc2522e96.jpg
But seems like her team is really adamant on giving her the same hair, just with varying lengths 🥲
I personally think the same old hair is holding her back from reaching her full potential, visuals-wise, but I’m still happy we finally got to see a glimpse of this cast! 🫶🏻
Sorry, the link I provided isn’t working. Here’s the hairstyle I’m referring to: https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQKmd1ZNbVHOkLmgFbAt1FnBfAhoq3lQAduhg&usqp=CAU
This hairstyle would have worked better without those terribly styled bangs ngl. I know KJW’s hair in DOTS, that would have looked so much better than whatever this is.
This is gonna be on netflix, right?
@Jimmy Yeah it’s definitely the bangs I’m not a fan of. If they really like putting bangs on her, at least make it wispy and see-through, like the bangs she had in Bring it On Ghost, where you can still see some of her forehead, instead of this thick-ass bangs they like giving her so much. It’s giving early 2010s, when pretty much every korean actresses had those terrible bangs that were so blocky they look almost wig-like lol. Good thing her pretty face is saving her from looking bad but still, like I said, I’d like to see her reach her full potential visually, and that will only happen if she loses the bangs! 😒
Anyway, I’m not sure if this drama will be on Netflix. I have a bad feeling it won’t be, given that Netflix usually promotes their upcoming offerings early. So if this drama is going to be on Netflix, they would be promoting it now. I’ve read somewhere that it’s possible Disney Plus will pick this up, which will be a bummer for sure as I don’t have a DP subscription
@Hina
My bad, I wasn’t familiar with the Nokdu webtoon, and just had in mind my familiar image repository of historically accurate hairstyles built off of all the other sageuks I’ve seen over the years. It’s also funny that while I’m familiar with a great many KSH dramas, I haven’t seen any of those you mentioned–and it turns out, it’s precisely in those that she opted to use different hairstyles? Well, good for her! 🙂
Now, I don’t have the greatest trust in artist photos released through “official” (approved) channels (they are always edited/beautified, aren’t they?)–imho, candid pics or, better yet, live film are the only truly accurate representation of an artist’s appearance. That said, I do agree KSH is very beautiful in any hairstyle, and I really wish she’d choose to experiment with other looks (sans bangs) more often.
Over countless roles I’ve seen KSH in as a teen and adult, I’ve never seen her willing to part with the bangs as main hairstyle–not even to switch it up a little and look a bit distinctive across different roles (like all other actresses try to do–except for maybe Jun Ji-hyun), not even when a different hairstyle would have fit a particular character of hers better, now even in sageuk (I know there were plot reasons for her unkempt short hairdo in Tale of Nokdu, but the bangs on top of that were completely out of place–jarringly ahistorical and incongruous, as an ancient woman cutting her tresses to make herself “ugly” would have just hacked off the length, and never thought to give herself a modern layered hairstyle, which is what the bangs are).
It all comes down to, I guess, the hang-up she has over her forehead; her determination to keep it covered always doesn’t exactly leave her room to experiment with other, bangs-less hairstyles.
@AJ Yeah I know she’s quite insecure about her forehead, which I don’t understand. Yes her forehead was quite big in her early teen years. But over the years, it has become proportional to her face. Like, look at these pics and tell me she doesn’t look GREAT with her forehead exposed:

I just don’t understand why her stylist can’t let go of the bangs lol. If KSH is still feeling insecure, there are plenty of techniques out there to take attention away from her forehead without resorting to bangs. But like I said, those aren’t really needed as her forehead has become proportional to her face already as she grows into her features. Also, she doesn’t have bangs in We All Cry Differently, Triangle, Love Alarm season 1 and River Where the Moon Rises, and she looked pretty dang fantastic in those dramas. I really just don’t see the need for bangs. But I think for Tale of Nokdu, they did have to follow the hairstyle of the main character from the webtoon, so they had to include the bangs: https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQtDeb3gInoMHJcTt2j5LUZ09eE58tXvIyp-MeszyheVd6zl4FQgyELqiOF&s=10
@hina omg she looked like a goddess in that airport pic you linked! please, can someone style her like that again 😭😭😭
@Hina
Sorry, I somehow made my reply appear above instead of here. Please look there.
But in short, I agree that KSH is very beautiful without the bangs as well.
Hi @AJ, I’ve read your comment now. Yeah, it sucks that she had more varied hairstyles/hair colors in her lesser known dramas (I’m still obsessed with her red hair in Reset! lol), while she had pretty much the same hairstyle in her more mainstream dramas, and that’s why many people have the impression she never changed her hairstyle.
And yes, official pics can be edited, but here’s a video of So Hyun when she was in Thailand:
https://youtu.be/EpQ_av527co?si=BZp0qhB3gWV37rvx
I think she only had very minimal makeup there and it’s a candid, behind-the-scene type video, so you can really see how she looks like. I still think this bang-less So Hyun with very minimal makeup is more beautiful than a dolled up So Hyun with bangs lol
I do not like her bang in her current drama Serendipity’s Embrace to the extent of being disturbed by it when watching her scenes. Hope she wont have the same style in this Good Boy drama
I still can’t believe this combination of writer, director and cast exists. This is what dream teams are made of. KSH needs to keep picking dramas with dream teams like this. The perfect drama for their JTBC lead role debut. This is it.
for real, this is the cast an actress of her calibre deserves to work with lol. fervently hoping that after this drama, she won’t go back to working with rookies again. i don’t care if it offends some people here, but i really think a rising young actress like her should be working with actors who have proven themselves already, like bo gum. there may be hidden gems type of talented rookie actors, but in my opinion, working with rookie male leads brings down ksh’s profile and is probably one of the reasons she’s not perceived as a top star (even tho she’s popular). let’s be honest, one of the signs that a young actor or young actress has already made it is when he or she is paired with popular and/or critically acclaimed lead stars and veterans. this is such a great pairing. the stellar supporting actors are just the icing on top of a yummy cake!
Will definitely check this out. I hope there is minimal or no romance.
It’s still surreal to see KSH and PBG next to each other. They’ve been one of my dream pairings since their iconic playact onstage at the 2015 KBS Awards lol. Still can’t believe it’s finally happening 😭
Will definitely subscribe to whatever streaming platform that picks this drama up!
what a stacked cast! and i commend ksh for still looking beautiful despite the bad hairstyle lol. but maybe it looks better in motion?
Excellent director, great writer, extremely talented cast. Plot sounds fun and interesting and topical due to the Olympics. Channel is reliable. It will be very hard for this to go wrong!
Rooting for KSY to have finally chosen a good script and character after a string of duds (my hopes were high for Serendipity’s Embrace but from reviews I have seen the drama is kind of meh).
And hopefully a less vanilla character for PBG finally. Considering his character is a boxer I expect his character’s personality to be a bit more rugged than his usual sunny sunshine pure characters. Boxers also usually have messed up noses and ears, eyebrows, cheekbones etc but I guess they don’t want to mess with his visuals judging by this picture. It’s a pity as it would have been nice to see a bit of a physical transformation aside from the inevitable takes his shirt of to show us his biceps and six pack scene.
Lol I know what camp you are from. You are a silent KSH hater. Reviews for Serendipity’s Embrace are actually and majority good. It already tops drama and actor’s buzz despite of 2 weeks of airing.
@Sunny, where did you read pedestrian reviews about Serendipity’s Embrace? I just watched 2 eps and love it. KSH and Chae Jong-hyeop were so cute every moment they were together. I usually don’t like any school drama including Dream High, Reply 1988, and even those school tropes in Lovely Runner. But I’m totally buying Serendipity’s Embrace. This is the one exception among all the school dramas I’ve ever tried to watch but failed to like them.
Ok, I think I’m gonna watch more eps today to see where all the negative reviews could be about. LOL. I was planning to wait until there were more eps released though.
Same, not into school dramas at all, but I read that the school parts will be just flashbacks, so I thought I’d give it a try. And wow, I’m so glad I did! It’s a very easy watch, so warm, cute, and fluffy without the unnecessary sh*t often added in rom-coms like serial killer subplots and whatnot lol. Just the perfect drama to relax with after my day at work! And yeah, majority of the reviews I’ve seen are positive, I don’t know where Sunny read he negative ones.
BTW, I’m obsessed with the song Destiny from the OST! I have that on repeat on my Spotify lol
@Somebody: I’m glad you are enjoying it. Many of the comments I have seen is that it’s just OK. Not bad, not great but just average hence the “meh”.
@Sunny, that’s fine there are negative about SE or ppl aren’t impressed at all. Perhaps how one likes the two leads matter a lot. I found myself already very fond of KSH and CJH before watching SE. Their natural and cute interactions in the drama just reinforce my liking.
@Flowery, glad you enjoyed SE too. Different from you, I couldn’t finish any school drama if there were no serial killer like subplots. Lovely Runner is one example. LMAO.
Beyond evil, Life on mars ,…both are on the list of my faves of all the time . And the veteran actors as second leads , wow, i just love them . I’m in . It’s time for KSH to show what she is able of , the drama she is currently in is a disappointment for me . Not challenging at all for her, and no chemistry with the lead actor !
So that’s why you recommended Beyond Evil to me and I love it too. Yet to watch Life on Mars. I have so many dramas to watch on my plate now. LOL.
I’m booked by director, writer and the cast, the only minus is the plot still looks unclear and a bit unnatractive to me.
Olympians as police officers, okay, but what’s the plot? I read they’re like “Olympic avengers”, they will chase criminals like superheroes and flex their athletic skills.
This kind of plot isn’t appealing to me, but considering so good director and writer working on it I hope it’s just my meaningless whining, and the plot more and deeper than that.
I think it will be like a police procedural where they tackle various different cases but with the twist of using their unique Olympian skills. I expect at least he first half will be about them being recruited and learning to work together as a team.
@Sunny, yes, after reading synopsis I also think they will be using their olympian skills. And it sounds like action drama where police officers just need physical strength to catch someone. I’m not a fond of such genre, and more like to watch dramas about police officers with detective plot, but writer and director very good, so maybe it’s just synopsis confusing.
I also expect each episode to be around 70-80 minutes long or maybe 90 mins in the second half because only that justifies the 8.5 month long filming period. The sets are huge and the actions scenes are being filmed in a very big budget blockbuster manner. High hopes for this one because Shim Nayeon PD is insanely talented.
@Terr
Actor Park Seo Joon said in some of his interview about a new law on working hours has been approved in Korea. As I understood from his interview, dramas used to be filmed from morning to night, but now they don’t do that, so filming began to take longer and may take a whole year.
So I’m not sure if filming period was so long because of the long episodes or because of the new law, or maybe because of the work with CGI.
Also hope PD will make a best out of it.
I don’t care for the writer of the drama, but the cast and PD are strong. I’m also pretty darn glad KSH finally has a costar her calibre which hasn’t happened since YSH years ago. It’s about time.
They could have picked from multitude of different athlete hairstyles and went with that for KSH? Damn. Anyway, I’m still unsure on what the synopsis even is, but hopefully its good. Wish it was airing in the next couple of weeks tho. The Olympics would have been a good bandwagon to jump on while promoting the drama.
I’m currently following KSH’s drama, Serendipity Embrace. I love it.
I’m also watching PBG’s Record of Youth thanks to some complaints. LOL. It’s not a very interesting drama and focused too much on trifles as far as the first few eps I’ve watched. But I love PBG’s character and acting in the show and am looking forward to see an underdog emerging from him in the story.
I Love both the ML and the FL! Love the supporting cast! Love the PD! I haven’t watched any works of the writer yet! But it seems the writer was able to create scripts in my favorite genres. THIS! Totally up my street. I hope Good Boy justifies my high expectation.
@Somebody: I’m interested to read your thoughts. Record of Youth was so disappointing for me. It had the potential to be great but it felt like the writer lost their way with the story they wanted to tell, the pacing was dreadful, the chemistry was off. PBG’s acting was very good and he carried the drama. BWS was still quite green as an actor and his performance was weak in places but he had charisma (and the looks!) He also had noticeably way better chemistry with Park So Dam than Park Bo Gum did IMO. Sadly, the talented Park So Dam was just criminally wasted in her role. It was like the writer just stopped caring about her character after a very interesting start. She and PBG also had absolutely no chemistry which made it difficult to care about the romance angle.
I totally agree with ALL your points here. I have to admit if not for PBG, I might have just dropped the drama already. The plot has slow development, more like slices of tough and challenging life. LMAO. I agree with some online comments whining about how drab it was to watch miserable life experience that underprivileged folks had to go through given that the real life for most of us is tough enough already. Why should we need a drama to remind us again? LOL.
I also don’t like what I have seen between the OTP so far. I’ve never watched Park So Dam before and therefore, this one drama alone can’t justify her acting credentials. She appeared wooden to me whenever she was with PBG. It’s like watching two long-term buddies chatting with level heads about daily nitty-gritty rationally. There are no sparks between them as romantic interests to each other neither much ecstasy shown in PSD being with her dream man. Their falling in love appeared so out of duty cos the script told them to and not convincing LOL, unlike BWS and KHY in Lovely Runner. I also felt stronger chemistry between BWS and PSD.
The narratives of romance in RoY are pretty weak from what I’ve watched so far.
That all being said, I think PBG did a great job portraying a struggling but proud aspiring entertainer. His acting was nuanced and that was highlighted in his mafia role in the drama within the drama. He was totally badass and mesmerizing in those thuggish scenes. I fell in love! LOL. That’s one of the reasons I’m so much looking forward to Good Boy. I’m also excited to watch him in next few eps of RoY emerge in the showbiz as an underdog! IMO, PBS’s acting was the best in Record of Youth among all his works I’ve watched so far. I may need to explore more cos I only watched him in Reply 1988, Love in the Moonlight, and Encounter. I’ve never been a fan of PBG before although I can fangirl his visuals LOL, but I think I’m becoming one after watching RoY.
@Somebody: I think that’s why I get so frustrated by PBG because he can be a very good actor so I wish he would stop coasting as another commentator said and step away from thee vanilla lover boy roles and take some risks. Yes the scene in RoY where he plays the gangster is thrilling. It would be so fun to see him playing a similar character in a full length drama or film. I am hoping the fact that he is playing a boxer means his character will have a bit more edge in “Good Boy”
Their romance felt like a boring chore to get through for everyone. A chore for the audience, a chore for the actors to act, a chore for the writer to write, a chore for the director to direct. No chemistry, no sparks, no joy, just flat. I think the writer should have just written them as friends whose respective careers were on a similar upward trajectory and followed both of them navigating their respective paths and focused on that instead of the stale romance. Maybe have her get together with BWS character as they had much more convincing chemistry. It also felt like their characters were always talking AT each other rather than TO each other. PSD’s character lost all her spark once they started dating.
I’m not a fan of Park Bo Gum’s looks, he reminds me of a little mouse. Haha.
