Big Budget Sci-fi Action Movie Bureau 749 with Wang Jun Kai Opens to Strong Box Office Despite Abysmal Reviews and Ratings

This is Golden Week in Mainland China, the whole week off celebrating National Day on October 1 and a great time to release movies second only to the lunar new year holiday break. All eyes are on the box office and the historical and patriotic war film The Volunteers: The Battle of Life and Death came in first to no surprise. But the fun movie was supposed to be Bureau 749 a monsters and superpowers sci-fi big budget flick 8 years in the making with teen heartthrob Wang Jun Kai in the lead. Just being entertaining is enough and despite the movie coming in 2nd place in box office receipts the reviews ARE SO SO BAD. Like, wow is it bad and this from C-netizens who said their expectations were low already and just wanted something to pass the time and this turkey couldn’t even deliver. Douban ratings are at 4.7 and Weibo reviews are eviscerating it to the degree happening to Joker 2 in the international box office haha.

  • I liked that at least 749 tried to do something different than those war propaganda movies they keep releasing every year, but i imagine that doomsday monters its not their forte so its probably low quality with high budget. They will get better if they keep doing it, i hope investors dont give up on this genre.

    • Agree.
The movie's ideas were not well executed and I wish they won't use this as an excuse to condemn future movies.

  • As a visual freak, I do think WJK way more handsome than his former idol group mate, Jackson Yee. LOL. No interest in the acting of either one.

    • Lol the fact that I agree with this. He is cute. But for acting ahhahahha
Feels like because I don’t have high expectations for c actors anyway

      • Why did I say that? I just thought it's only meaningful to compare their visuals cos I don't think either one has any acting chops to discuss about. LOL. I'm gonna offend Jackson's rabid fans now. He is overrated IMO. Like Ren Min, he did ok in a certain youth movie. But that's it deserving good reviews. He's limited in acting range and his visuals don't help LOL.

Similar questions to some popular C celebs (e.g. a certain actor in the Untamed LOL), I'm wondering if his high exposure to C-ent getting numerous projects has to do with his strong backing and continuous movie projects ass kissing CCP cos I really don't think he's super duper extraordinary as his fans proclaim LOL. You know many so-called C movie "big stars" failed their drama projects. I think directing is way more important than acting in the shooting of movies. Therefore, actors may easily get away from their acting flaws on big screen. Dramas, however, are easier to expose acting weakness with so many hours on screen and all the details of their presence have nowhere to hide that easily as in a movie setting of just 2-3 hours.

At least, WJK is good looking like eye candy and can sing. LOL. I once watched his stage performance with a big Taiwanese pop star whose name I don't even remember. LOL.

    • I disagree on Jackson Yee, I think he's got real talent in acting, as shown in the Longest Day in Chang An. He was only 17 back then but he did a great job against his veteran co-stars. It helps that he looks more mature than his actual age. He was also excellent in Better Days opposing Zhou Dongyu. He's an idol who never took part in idol projects.

    • I am not a fan of Jackson Yee but I will cut him some slack. He was good in Longest day in Chang'An whether we like his character or not. He was really good in Better days and shut people mouths. His latest costume movie where he plays a rogue, boy ate it. Now is he perfectly perfect ? No. But is delivering so far ? Hell yeah ! As an idol singer he is overrated imo. But as an actor one can give him some credits

    • Both WJK and YYQX are shortie with mediocre talent in both acting and singing. Tho WJK has better visuals than YYQX but both of them are capital-backed that most of their projects were carried by a much senior respected actor and those two boys just got babysat. YYQX career steps back as he got embroiled in ‘small town test taker controversy‘ and some members of his Yi clans got embroiled in corruption and got kicked out from their post thereby affecting his resources. But it seems YYQX is trying to get back thereby other capital backed artists are being pushed at the back

  • The director criticized another movie and then came out to say that his account got hijacked and he didn’t make the comment. Finally the platform came out with the statement that after careful investigation, that they were able to trace the comment directly to his phone.

  • Hm I might be wrong but according to updates on the China side, 749 was only a success on the first day. But by the 3rd day, it flopped. Trailing behind many other films.
