iQiyi Modern Romance C-drama Genius Girlfriend with Tian Xi Wei and Hu Yi Tian Ends Unremarkable Run with a Low Douban 5.3 Score
It’s kinda ironic that former Pursuit of Jade costars Zhang Ling He and Tian Xi Wei ended up having a similar result outcomes with their respective next dramas. Which also further confirms that hits like PoJ is so so hard to achieve nowadays, even stars coming out from a hit can’t really tap that buzz right into lifting their next drama. Zhang Ling He had Overdo which got a low 5.0 rating on Douban after it’s widely criticized run and now Tian Xi Wei’s just finished airing modern drama Genius Girlfriend has gotten only a Douban 5.3 rating. Genius Girlfriend reception and reviews just made it feel so unexciting and rather uneventful, the drama may be solidly made but the takeaway is that it’s mostly boring. It doesn’t help that the consensus is Tian Xi Wei and Hu Yi Tian didn’t generate any meaningful chemistry and the romance wasn’t even all that romantic at the end of the day. I don’t think GG’s lackluster reception will hurt Tian Xi Wei’s leveling up from PoJ but it’s certainly doing nothing to help Hu Yi Tian who is already suffering a few years from not filming enough dramas.
I think it is a stretch that they played HSchoolers at the beginning of the drama, they look like adults cosplaying students.
ALL the modern and Republic-era C dramas ARE BORING regardless who are the leading actors. lol
Do any Republic-era dramas do well? Maybe I just don’t pay enough attention to that genre to know, but all the ones I’ve seen have always ended chaotically which just spoils the drama for me.
Hm you are right I can’t really think of many Republic era films do well. I’m not sure why they like to make them.
Perhaps Mystic Nine may be one of the few.
Republican era IS chaotic and horribly harsh time. They aren’t really for the HE crowd. And like every genre, quality matters. There are many Republican dramas and films that have done well, as it also covers WW2. Winter Begonia, War of Faith, Man’s Inhumanity to Man, Dead to Rights, Hidden Blade, The Disguiser are just a few that come to mind. People expecting idol dramas, especially historicals, to be excellent is asking alot.
@Brenda, Republic-era C-dramas are always overly theatrical and hopelessly tragic, definitely not my cup of tea. Not to mention, the historical background, as interpreted under the CCP’s influence, is heavily distorted and full of lies. Why should I suffer through fake stories? I’d rather just have fun watching fantasy. lol
My sense is the campus drama audience is pretty small. I also feel that this is more of a youth/friendship coming-of-age ensemble drama rather than a romance.
It always seems weird to expect actors to land a second popular and/or well-rated drama immediately after doing a popular and/or well-rated drama.
It was a sweet and nice watch. But the male lead was lacking a bit but she made up what he was lacking. It would have probably been better if for most of the drama they did not focus only on High School but regardless it was not bad.
I love TXW and watched 5 episode but, ended up dropping the drama. The ML doesn’t seem to have any chemistry with TXW. At least TXW still trying. The script is not enticing to me.
Well, hope Where The Mask END is good.
The male lead looks and acts bland AF and for that reason, I can’t bring myself to watch this drama, no matter how much I love TXW. With the low douban score, yeah, I guess it wasn’t that great.

This drama is cute but the ML was bad. I found myself hoping he would be killed off and the 2nd ML could take over. Yeah I know they can’t kill kids it wouldn’t be popular.
