Zhao Jin Mai’s Team Marketing Her as the Next Song Zu Er Taking Advantage of Opening in Market for the Gamine Headstrong Female Lead
There’s a reason when a star or a project succeeds it’s is either called the successor to a prior such success or future stars and projects will be compared to it. For stars especially a successful one is boxed in with an image – for actresses it’s the haughty queen, quirky hipster, cool girl, sweet girl-next-door, etc. and the same for the guys. So for Song Zu Er she was top of her image profile – the face card tiny gamine girl with a steel backbone – and her fall out of the industry due to her tax scandal had left that pillar empty on top. With Zhao Jin Mai having two well-received dramas this year with Amidst a Snowstorm of Love and now The Princess Royal, her team is marketing her to take over the top of that pillar from Song Zu Er and the industry is responding in kinda as she’s getting all those scripts. That’s life, a door closing for one means a door opening for another.
Isn’t she a better actress than song zhu er? So annoying that they compare her in such a way. Like let her stand in her own graces and talent.
I like her better than Zhou Ye.
They’re two different actresses, so what’s with the weird comparison. I really want to know your sources because taking a rando’s comment on Weibo (where they make up scenarios 24/7) and turning it into an article that sounds like it’s a fact is truly a choice. Might as well put in two names into ChatGPT and see where that takes us from now on.
Song Zu Er!! 🥺 I’m still hoping for her return! 🤞🙏 lol. Talent that is much needed in Chinese dramaland.

Zhao Jin Mai is super pretty – I don’t see where the plain allegation comes from, personally.
I personal prefer ZJM’s visuals than SZE’s visuals. Acting-wise, I don’t know much about SZE. ZJM while solid, isn’t versatile enough to be a great actress YET. She’s not the kind like Zhao Lusi that exudes impressive presence on screen and is talented and charismatic in her own way. But she is watchable, specifically in modern genres without much romance.
Zhao is prettier then Song but I really like watching Song act. She can really own characters she takes on. Thus I really dont think Zhao can replace Song.
But I agree, Zhao Lusi is a class of her own for this age band.
I find it funny that C-netz and I-netz seem to have contrasting views on acting abilities. C-netz think Zhao Lusi belongs under the liuliang actress category (usually connoted with lackluster acting) while Zhao Jinmai is seen as a 正小花 young actress for the serious dramas.
Do they? But it does not surprised me about the difference. As a i-netz, I really enjoy watching lean yet muscular, healthy, natural tanned male actors, not the paled faces, skinny idols. Their visuals are just so different.
@HL Hey, I feel like I haven’t seen you in a while. C-netz also prefer their male actors to have lean muscles, skintone-wise is a mixed bag though 🤔 I didn’t see anyone complaining about male actors being too tanned, but they do praise when an actor has fairer skintone. But yeah, it’s always interesting to compare the stark differences.
@Lilith, I had a bad case of Covid… brain fog…I tune to read this blog and comments but my brain was too foggy to form any comment of my own…Just random single liners. I am just sadly easing back to routine.
But I did laugh when a new commentor pop up that swear so much towards anyone that liked the Double main actor. I really had to laugh. How can someone be so bothered by a Actor who they dont even know personally.
@HL Plenty of trolls around lately who also like pretending to be multiple people on this blog. Their behavior seems very similar to those agency employees/part-timers on Chinese SNS.
@HL I see, hope you recover soon! As for new commenters..well..seems to me like there’s more trolls popping up, switching names and acting like company employees/part-timers.

@HL, Take care and get well soon. There’s a surge of omicron subvariant in the US. I put back on mask again whenever inside a public space. It’s annoying but I have no idea of better ways of protection beside vaccination.
@Somebody, thanks for reminder 😷…I should do that now. It was awful being so ill🤒. Looks that there are wars that cannot be prevented… wars against germs, wars against trolls and war between Countries/religion…
@Lilth, thank you for well wishes!! Water army..that is the term Chinese use to talk about those trolls, I may be wrong. My mandarin standard is Primary school level….🤣🤣. I dont even know how I passed my Chinese ‘O’ Levels in my days.
Many so called C “serious dramas” are snoozefests, boring to the heck! So is non liuliang actors’ acting, yawning! LOL.
After watching a couple of eps of The Princess Royal and did enjoy the chemistry between ZJM and ZLH, I decided to quit the drama. TPR has no substance other than cute interactions between the OTP. But their acting still isn’t appealing enough to save the drama and hook me up till the end. ZJM is serviceable although she got better in the latter eps than the very beginning where she was totally modern except for her costume. LOL.
XJM was even worse in much disappointing Amidst a Snowstorm of Love. I have watched 3-4 of ZJM’s dramas to have this opinions about her and I think I’m fair to every C actress cos none of them is my fave. I don’t need to put down ZJM in order to elevate my fave and every C drama fan visiting this site know who he is.
I switched to Blossom in Adversity. I accidentally came across BiA and surprisingly found the plot up my alley. I love underdog stories. This is a female-centric underdog story. Zhang Jingyi was convincing in her role and her aura fitted the setting of her story, unlike ZJM who was kinda out of place (出戲) in TPR. The weakness of BiA was the ML. Hu Yitian is one of the most wooden actors I’ve ever watched. His facial muscles appeared as if 5 lbs of frozen meat just taken out of a freezer. I wish to microwave it to soften a bit so he could move his muscles more. LOL.
Some actors like Wang Xing Yue were able to make their one-dimensional characters nuanced while some other actors like HYT made their complicated characters one-dimensional. LOL.
LOL I love your comment
Right. Neither ZJM or ZSU can compare with Zhao Lusi. ZL is like a brilliant star that shines brightly on her own even if she doesn’t speak or do anything. She acts so well and uniquely, like no other. Those fans who idols has been surpassed by ZL are so envious that they hate her and issues hate campaign. You cannot stop ZL. Her arrival in showbiz shocks the entire industry and she will continue to amazed fans with her wit and charm.
ZJM seems more like the girl-next-door type rather than “face card whatsoever”. SZE’s visuals vowed me in Prisoner of Beauty’s teasers, while ZJM looks like a little kid playing dress up in Princess Royal. Does the industry place them together just because both were child actresses?
agree with you.. I am not big fans of SZE but her acting is okay and I think she is very pretty…actually hoping that her tax evasion will be clear so we can get the Prisoner of Beauty released..As for ZJM, I know she has quite many popular drama under her belt, and I am mesmerized with her acting in Princess Royal…she is not super pretty but because of her good acting, I can believe of the portrayal of the character. I can feel the confusion in her heart and her struggle as princess royal…enjoying her chemistry with ZLH…even that maybe for me their chemistry working more compare to ZLH chemistry with Bai Lu or Esther
Yea I’m surprised as well, it’s kinda slowburn but his chemistry with ZJM is getting better with each episode. I tried Kunning but can’t get on with it, seems dark and painful to watch. ZJM seems more at ease with ZLH than WL although I only watched a few scenes of Snowstorm but heard feedback.
There are times I feel like the way she looks at ZLH she finds him handsome (no malice).
On another note, very rare to see Koala replying but why in Chinese even if I can read since she made this an English site. Would have loved more replies from Koala interacting with us.
Yes! This is the most enjoyable of ZLH characters to watch so far – I don’t know if it’s because this character is closest to his real self (his words) or that his acting has improved slightly with each project which makes him easier to watch. He’s doing so well as Pei Wen Xuan even though ZJM is clearly the stronger actress. I feel like he’s having the best chemistry with ZJM even tho he’s supposedly dating Bai Lu in real life.
They both give diff vibes. To be honest I like ZJM more. But SZE has some memorable characters in her previous works. Its kinda sad shes been crossed off.
I am not sure if ZJM is ready to take anyone’s place I found her acting a bit stiff, AASOL with Wu Lei felt like watching a drama of two robots. I am a fan of Wu Lei and her they both have a visual but not together they do not complement the acting of each other. But in TRP the ML is saving her, some part of her is like she is playing in the play not in the drama.
You spoke of my mind too. Thanks.
I’m sure I won’t be a fan of ZJM after watching her in AASOL and TPR. It will be a surprise if she takes any IT girl’s place. That would just indicate C-ent has no talents in her generation.
@somebody,that is the case for her. C ent has no talent or competition in her generation as of now. I feel SZR has much more depth in her a acting than ZJM. But she as all the time to gain more experience to be the better actress of the two, since she is so young or so far has no scandal happens to her.
After watching Princess, I can finally say that ZJM and Wu Lei not working is more Wu Lei’s fault, tbf. I loveeeeed him in Love Like The Galaxy, but he really cannot use that same intense pining eyes in Snowstorm because well, he doesn’t have a dead family to avenge and so those looks are a bit disturbing, especially in a light modern drama.
I am perplexed by comments about her looks, she’sreally glowed up in recent years and she has a girls next door vibe rather goddess vibe, but doesn’t mean she’s not attractive?
Acting skill wise SZE is more versatile than ZJM. ZJM is not comfortable in romance heavy scenes. It’s not her comfort zone. Reset had less romance so she was really good. In TPR despite having decent chemistry with ZLH, in some intimate scenes her awkwardness shown while ZLH is a pro so it did look imbalanced. But at least as the drama progressing, she is improving.
Hi first time posting here. Came across your article while browsing the internet and thought I’ll add my two cents to the discussions. I like Zhao Jin Mai. I love her in Reset and I think she has both the looks and the talent to make it big in the industry. That said, it’s not doing her any favors to compare her to other actress. JJM is still very young, she was filming Reset and Princess Royal while still studying and at this point of her life obviously trying to make the transition from child actress to more adult roles. I think it’s still early to say what type of image or roles she will be going for.
The China market is very big. I am sure there are room for established actresses and the young upcoming ones like JJM. Although sadly entertainment news and netizens love to pit actors and actresses against one another. It just create unnecessary fan wars.
Sorry I should use ZJM for Zhao Jin Mai instead of JJM. Not sure what I was thinking. Too tired at end of day.
Song Zuer’s team who are made up of her family, really set her up failure. Even when she makes a comeback, which I heard will be in third quarter, it will be difficult for her recapture where she left off.
Can only laugh at some of these comments above especially when they started to bring Zhao Lusi’s name in the discussion that got nothing to do with her and even more brought up about Wu Lei here lol. It’s obvious where who these guys are.. the names are also familiar whose fans you guys belongs to haha. All this funny agenda.
Talking down Zhao Jinmai’s acting and to prop up Zhao Lusi’s is juat funny especially if we know whose fans you are and for people who don’t even understand Chinese and what the impact of their line deliveries 😅.
All in all, no matter how you try to brainwashing here.. it means nothing as people have eyes and can judge themselves 😁
