The Rise of Ning with Zhang Wan Yi and Ren Min Tops the October 2024 Newly Released C-dramas

So October 2024 doesn’t have any breakout C-drama hit so all eyes are onward to November. The three bigger profile C-dramas to air are The Rise of Ning with Zhang Wan Yi and Ren Min, Kill Me, Love Me with Liu Xue Yi and Wu Jin Yan, and Snowy Night: Timeless Love with Li Qin and Zeng Shun Xi. The mid-month Datawin tracking is out and the rankings in terms of viewership and buzz are in the order above, so while The Rise of Ning isn’t the hit that Zhang Wan Yi needed after back-to-back-to-back dramas this summer it’s still nice to have a middle of the road reception. I’ve been glancing at all three but don’t have time to fully commit to any this month but nothing looks bad.

  2. Congrats to the drama! I’m sort of glad that Zhang Wan Yi’s been having moderate successes, but haven’t hit superstardom in a way that would get all sorts of crazy fans.

      • Interesting! I much preferred AYTO to TRON as the latter feels a bit more run of the mill. I am also not liking how long it’s taking for the female lead to know the male lead is not her brother.
And no hate to Ren Min but her acting is just not it. Something feels off with her line delivery

  3. I’ve been watching Rise of Ning for some light background noise. There’s something about Ren Min’s line delivery that feels a bit “fake” to me. I don’t know if it’s her real voice or a voice actress, but I’m not loving it. Ci Sha is also a bit too convincing in his role that I actually quite dislike him. Kill Me Love Me feels too heavy for what I’m in the mood for right now. And I have absolutely no interest in the Snow one, which looks like a bad attempt at wuxia.

    • I’m watching rise of ning as well and have the same question about ren min 🤔 she speaks in this very high pitched voice and worse, there’s no intonation or inflexion in her speech. It’s just… flat. She also has little facial expressions. I don’t have a hugeee problem cos I definitely prefer her character here to the countless others cutesy whiny female characters and voices in cdrama, but it’s quite funny. Especially beside zhang wanyi who delivers his lines so well. 😆 nonetheless the story is interesting but not too gripping that I’m super addicted lol

      • I think you described the voice issue better than me! It definitely sounds flat. It’s like she’s just reading monotonously off a piece of paper rather than sounding like someone actually speaking in their daily life. I know ZWY isn’t the “visual” type of actor, but I really like his voice.

      • Talking about Zhang Wan-yi’s voice.. It sounds so similar to Luo Jin’s voice. I just can’t 🙂

I find Luo Jin’s voice very attractive and sexy. So I was watching the trailer of AYTO the other way and was so surprised when I heard his voice (never watched any of his dramas), cause it sounded so much like Luo Jin, maybe like a younger version? Also, his phrasing/way of delivering his lines is very similar as well. So I ended up watching AYTO just based on his voice haha.

  4. I’m bingeing Kill Me Love Me and really liking it. I read the novel and wondered how they were going to rewrite the ToTal A-Whole ML. I’ve been nicely surprised at how well they have rewritten this character and adapted the structure of the story to the adaptation. LXY totally fits the character and WJY slays in her first wuxia assassin role. The cinematography/color palette is just beautiful too. I don’t remember any historicals that have so many gorgeous costumes and scenery. And NGL, I’m also thoroughly approving the real kissing scenes and not the usual fake lip fusion.

      • Or she got inspired by Zhao Lusi’s ‘ make up’ enhancement! I am not against PS or make up tricks as long as they improve on someone’s looks.
Just don’t look worse or generic.

    • I think Ren Min looks cute too! Asians can have tall noses. My mom’s side all have tall noses and they are all full asian. I’m mixed so I can’t use myself as an example but I enjoy actors whether they had work done or not. Shows are all fantasy amyways and purely entertainment.

  5. I’ve been watching this show and love it. Well deserved and congratulations to the actors and crews.

Anyways, watched some cdramas and the makeup they put on the actors and actresses were too white and heavy. When they did crying scene, the tears couldn’t be seen. Is it a new trend or what?

  6. I’m enjoying this drama immensely. I won’t compare it to ZWY’s previous drama because I love both dramas equally and ZWY is a delight to watch. For those viewers who complain that his acting is expressionless and that they can’t enjoy his acting… my advice is to pay more attention to his aura and line delivery. He emotes more with his ‘presence’ than facial expressions. I don’t know how better to describe it, but I got used to it and think he’s a very talented actor.

I’m glad that his dramas aren’t a breakout hit, that way his fanbase is sane, steady and grows organically. C-ent can be a cesspool, and there are so, so many cases of stars being hailed by obsessed fans one day, and crucified the next day by the same obsessive fans. I’m quite glad that at this time in his career, he doesn’t have to deal with that. Loving Ren Mi here too, whether it’s styling or surgery, she looks gorgeous. I personally, don’t think she’s had any major work done, but that she’s lost a lot of her baby fat so her face looks slimmer as she grows older. And I like her voice, I may not understand Mandarin, but I’m grateful that she’s not dubbed and doesn’t sound ‘generic’.

  7. Watching all 3 and honestly The Rise of Ning is the more enjoyable one for me. It isn’t the best, but it’s not boring at least because there’s so much going on even if the main romance is going at a turtle’s pace lol. Although my gripe would be that in the recent episodes, the secondary couple has too much screen time. But other than that, I’m enjoying it.
Snowy Night is just too snooze-y and Kill Me Love Me has great visuals but something is just not clicking for me.

  8. So late, but I’m here to say I’m enjoying The Rise of Ning so much better than Are You The One. The couple although not visually the best in comparison to AYTO, but had better chemistry IMO. I tried AYTO and I just could getting past the slow boring first eps so I dropped it at ep 5. Sadly, I think it would have been better If TRON had aired first and waited out a couple of months before airing AYTO – both were too close to airing the same year so there’s bound to be comparisons.
