China to Restrict BL C-dramas Further with Prohibition on International Platform Airing and Ban on Actors Starring in Them From Appearing in Other Projects — 24 Comments

    • I’m against this policy cuz it’s backwards and homophobic but since they’re doing it can we plx stop letting Gong Jun lead dramas, the man is nothing but a pretty face

  1. I imagine (and hope) this will be the rule from now on, otherwise it would be too unfair for many actors (including the ones in Revenged Love), many of which have become big stars after starting out on BL.

  2. Does the rule apply to dramas that are adapted from bl novel but changed to brotherhood for drama adaptation?

Can chinese government do a crack down on celebrities that like to buy hot search too, especially those that like to blacken other celebrities?

    • I was about to ask the same thing. If these dramas went through a review board and were allowed to air, I would hope none of the actors that starred in those dramas get penalized.

  3. Firstly, RL is no explosive success. Secondly, NRTA is probably irked by RL buying and bombarding the hot searches with explicit contents, hence they tightened up the ban. If you’ve been into C-ent long enough, you’d realize that NRTA usually reacts with bans after a drama or actor caused substantial amount of negative influence. BL was banned after WOH bombarded the hot searches with explicit contents, but after some time some BL dramas were allowed to air quietly without marketing promotions. Last but not least, the rumor is this revision only applies to those who did/aired BL starting from September onward and doesn’t affect brotherhood adaptation.

    • But the actors from RL did become very popular. For example, ZY from RL is top in Chinese entertainment now when it comes to magazine sales with 55 million yuan.

      • Panda, he is top of Chinese entertainment only in his dreams and in the dreams of people like you who get served nonsense and then happily eat it.

Seriously, do you really believe that stupidity? Idek

      • You believe it? Let’s see again in 6 months’ time. I’ve seen so many new celebrities popping out claiming to have become popular and top in something but 6 months down the road I hardly see them anymore.

      • @Lol and @Lilith
First of all, I haven’t even watched RL and I am not claiming if they will remain popular in future as well. But, are you saying that the sales figures are false?

      • I’ve heard there’s methods to inflate magazines sales. Endorsement sales is a better indicator for popularity. There are celebrities with high magazine sales but strangely enough their endorsement sales didn’t yield the same results.

      • That a sales figure. It doesn’t mean 55 million people bought the magazine. It means an unknown number of people bought multiple copies of the magazine, so the total sales are 55 million yuan. Fan clubs and fans are notorious for buying stacks of magazines — I imagine agencies do the same for an actor they are trying to push. The Revenged Love actors have got some heat, obviously, but I wouldn’t say they are top in Chinese entertainment.

  4. Maybe the government worries that with all the upcoming BL, all other types of dramas might be discarded leading to monopoly of BL contents.

They might be concerned that female actresses will be out of jobs as there are less demand for GL.

All other genres will also fall apart as BL contents are primarily focused on the boy coupling so nobody wanna watch other actors. Even the female supporting actresses are shunned and bullied for appearing in the show.

Also, BL supporters are much more vigorous online. Look at what happened to Xiao Zhan as BL supporters fought online.

With increasing BL influence, birth rates in CN will fall drastically. So all these will affect the socioeconomic status.

    • What do BL shows have to do with birth rates? Their audience is predominantly female – and most males that enjoy them would not be interested in fathering a child anyway. And in any case, men don’t become gay because they watched a freaking show!

    • Interesting! The reference to the low birthrate in China even it’s true the CCP officials are worrying about that!

It’s also interesting BL genre is so much popular than one would expect in a highly censored society like China. I have never been drawn to BL dramas. The Untamed is one unique exception that the narratives of the story itself is deep and inspiring, the directing is coherent and good, and XZ is dang charismatic and good looking in the series of course. LOL. Other than the Untamed, I just can’t find anything from BL appealing to me.

  5. They did the exact same thing WOH did and bought so much water and hot searches that the government couldn’t ignore them. It was made all the worse by Zi Yu who went absolutely crazy, not only buying water but that mess with the mag cover, and then topping it off with attacking established artists all over the socials. Talentless hack.

Both of them should be covered with this new law because it is an explicit drama, unlike dramas that were based on BL but not BL themselves.

Whoever has a problem with this, talk to Zi Yu.

  6. A lot of homophobic here. And wonderful conclusions like actresses might run out of job, drop birth rate and talented actors lost their place. Everyone have their own presence. Funniest thing is you all seem the righteous while being homophobia and brainwashed. 🥴
