First Movie of Hugely Popular Manga Demon Slayer Shatters Records, Surpasses Your Name and Chases Spirited Away’s Record of Number 1 Movie in Japanese Box Office History

I never thought there would be ANY possibility of records being set this year in the box office, any box office around the world, with COVID-19 either closing theaters, delaying movies, and keeping audiences at home. Japan has been doing a steady and solid job of keeping COVID-19 from hitting another wave and so has been rewarded with relative return to normalcy. Movie theaters have been open for many months now and all everyone can talk about this month is the runaway and record breaking success of animated movie Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train.

It’s a standalone movie based on the hit shonen manga Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, so popular as to have dethroned One Piece as the number one selling manga in Japan. The movie was released on October 16th and to date (7 weeks in) has surpassed Your Name as the and also surpassed Frozen in box office haul in the Japanese box office. It has earned $250 million USD and shows no sign of slowing down, currently sitting at the #3 spot for highest grossing movie in Japan EVER. Top spot remains Spirited Away followed by Titanic and now Demon Slayer. I love the manga, it’s action packed but super into family and sibling affection and being brave.

    • Well the movie is second arc. You gotta watch the anime first to understand. Demon slayer was adapted into anime last year which was huge hit. And they release second arc/ second season as an movie instead of episode. I’ve already read the manga, this movie arc is one of the best arc in the whole manga.

  1. Well this is very sad, demon slayer was fun to watch but it is nothing more than a typical shonen anime with a very cliche plot but with stellar visuals, so to see it surpass Dhibli movies and other movies such as your name and more masterpieces, well it’s very sad to see this

    • what is so sad to see about a justly earned achievement? a cliche plot with exceptional execution will have wonderful results. an unique story alone won’t gain favors. In the end most people watch movies as an entertainment escape. Were you sad when tenki no ko failed to match your name’s success? Because sistematically speaking tenki no ko was a great improvement from your name. It also had the hype from your name’s success, just like this yaiba movie has from its anime and manga. Why do you think a cliche shonen anime can’t surpass Ghibli and Makoto Shinkai’s movies, when manga is still a huge thing in Japan?

  2. This is great for everyone in involved in Demon Slayer and the anime industry in Japan but seriously what happened to Japanese live action cinema? The fact that the highest grossing movies in Japan next to animes are foreign movies is not a good sign.

  3. The reason why it’s such a big hit is because of the people’s anticipation for a new season plus it is a direct continuation to where the story ended in the anime. Although nothing is stunning about this arc except the parts that would make you cry and the reveal of a vital villain in the storyline. It’s important to note that it has a huge number of fans as well.

  4. I know many people like Your Name, but i prefer this one. The bond of this sibling was just pure and lovely. Very deserved Demon slayer team. Omedetto!!!
