The SBS 2015 Drama Awards wraps up the trio of year end big K-drama awards shows, and while network was the overall ratings winner for the year the selections for its awards were somewhat underwhelming. Joo Won took home the Daesang for his performance in Yongpal, which I actually liked and now makes me not blah about him, but it was now what I call Daesang worthy which ever way I look at it other than from a ratings rewards perspective whereby he headlined SBS’s biggest ratings hit this year. It’s hard not to be okay with it, though, because these awards are like company appreciation tokens, and Joo Won was all tears, snot and crying during his acceptance speech and vowing to continue to improve his craft as an actor with a humanistic touch. If Six Flying Dragons were a bigger hit I think Yoo Ah In would have won the Daesang, but then again, the awards for the night felt random in the sense that a lot of it went solo to one lead in a drama but not the other, like for dramas Heard it Through the Grapevine or Mrs. Cop or Mask or Punch. I think Kim Rae Won not winning the Daesang seems to be the biggest outcry from this evening.

Thanks Koala for truly mentioning that JooWon is so worthy for the Daesang award. He is truly amazing actor and great person. I am truly happy for him. To SBS, thank you very for acknowledging JooWon’s great acting and superb talent. Congratulations to all the winners…
Cheers to all Cuties in the world….
Happy New Year, Koala and everyone!
i thought the article was saying the exact opposite? Just that they can’t hold it against Joo Won because he seemed so happy, even though his performance was no way Daesang worthy.
Agreed. SBS must give something to appreciate a drama which gave them 20% ratings, the highest rating in that year for them.
A real travesty was the “Excellence” award going to MGY for her barely there, largely irrelevant performance in “The Village: Achiara’s Secret” – SEK totally owned that Drama and put in an astonishing performance, called by some her best ever. But of course the award goes to the “big name” despite the fact that both the part and the performance were actually minor.
I’m sorry but who is SEK ? I didn’t plan on watching that drama but now I’m curious.
Shin Eun Kyung
lol~ SEK has a big name tho, she’s a veteran actress and a senior to MGY so that “the award goes to the “big name” is invalid~ LMAO! and yes! SEK really did a great job in the village compare to MGY (but Excellence isn’t enough for her more of TOP Excellence!) but you can’t deny MGY did a good job too, Knets even praise her performance more than SEK fyi~ hahahaha 😛 so she deserved to received that award :* anyway, we can’t change anything so be it (^_-) if you can’t then its your choice 😛
Now that you mentioned it I just realised SEK was left out! Is it because of the scandal she was involved in (which I can’t even remember what about..haha! And I’m using the word scandal because that’s what the entertainment news used.)But like you said, SEK totally owned that drama.
But anyway, aww…Joo Won! You do deserve the Daesang for all yr hard work and lack of sleep! I don’t really consider Yong Pal his best performance cos the one character that still remains intact in my heart is him in Ojakkyo Brothers. But kudos to him for pulling off Yong Pal and made it somewhat watchable til the end.
Agree.
I adore MGY so much but i don’y think she deserves the award from that drama. SEK acting is goosebump inducing because of how she expressed her emotions..
If not even the woman who acted as kim hye jin stole the show with her acting and story compared to MGY
Sorry but MGY also did a great acting in this drama, I don’t know why SEK didn’t receive any awards!!! but this had nothing to do with moon she totally deserved that award.
everyone wanted kim hyun joo or kim rae won to win… joo won was unexpected. There was even a netizen poll in who should win and kim rae won and kim hyun joo had the most votes
I think networks are now basing their award ceremony on the factor of actors capability of gathering the interest of people with their performance on a specific drama “wither this drama was great or horrible”, rather than just their actual performance on that drama.
Well, he deserves it based on that. He worked that drama alone and made people watch it even though it was such a horrible one, and I think this is a great ability.
But I would not say it was his best performance, he did better.
I see award shows in Korea now either being a popularity vote or just a trophy reward for rating since it help them milk in some cash cow.
Joo won is great since I do love him but I won’t be bias just because I like him. In term of outstanding performance (whether the show was a hit or not) I feel Kim Rae Won more deserving of the Daesang for Punc IMO.
For Punch I meant to say!
Kim Rae Won, Kim Hee Aee and Su Ae should be given more loves. They carried the shows and ratings also pretty good. Those shows were earlier than others which give significant impact on the viewers for the next dramas. Just saying.
I’ll say it again, Kim Rae Won deserves the Daesang award. It’s a shame that he got nothing but a damn PD award. What a slap in the face it was to him.
I guess this is a split that people would understand(lol?). I haven’t watched Yongpal so I don’t know about Joo Won(but from the articles I’ve read he seems deserving). Kim Rae Won(and Jo Jae Hyun) were so great in Punch. I loved to hate them. He should’ve at least gotten the Top Excellence award. Yoochun was good but not that good.
Still, award shows are, like koala said, just broadcasters giving tokens of appreciation.
Don’t take it too seriously, the channel broadcasters are rushing to give the pre-military boys some recognition which is a positive thing. MGY won daesang many years ago also.
It’s about the role, joo won role in yong pal doesn’t showcase his strong acting, the role is like that but in bridal mask his acting obviously really strong because the charracter need various deep emotion n the drama also amazing, i’m really dissappointed he didn’t win that time but now he win it in not so difficult charracter n when his drama less interesting in the last few ep
I agree. he was good in yongpal but not like in gaksital. it was my first drama of him and i was blown away by him then. he should have won the daesung for bridal mask but nevermind, he’s still deserves it for carrying the show until the makjang fest took over.
Joo won shoulf have won Daesang for his Bridal mask and Goof Doctor performances…
Just not with this Yongpal
Agree with you!!! I don’t really consider Yong Pal his best performance cos i think his best best performance in Gaksital and good doctor . Unfortunatelly, KBS close their eyes for his talent
I believe Kim Rae Won deserve the daesang more than joo won, Punch was an amazing drama! oh well youngpal receives love because of the high ratings.
Maybe Yongpal was not joowon’s best drama but for giving his soul for it, many sleepless nights he does devserves the award (watch and learn KBS for not awarding him in gaksital). it is clear how dedicated he is for his work and to his fans and for that he is one of my favourite actors and i respect him a lot. not overpraising like some actor in other drama award (ahm) but giving him the kudos for leading a successful drama, no matter how the final product ended to be.
poor JW He never accepted even if he has doing it because he isn’t popular or because negative form people
he has great acting good doctor but he miss daesang cause too young . YP he barely negative bias and horrible work in times. no blame no retaliate
SBS / KBS /MBC them hold the success to judge for a long time, not first time .
Thanks KK. I guess I understand your comment in general and thanks for saying nice things about Joo Won. Folks, I guess this is what kk was trying to say:
“Poor JW! He never received any award even he deserves it becasue he isn’t popular or because of negative opinions from people.
He has great acting in Good Doctor but he missed Daesang for being too young. As Yong Pal, he barely had negative prejudice, horrible work in times, and did not blame nor retaliate. (I’m not sure about this last statement.)
SBS/KBS/MBC have been successful in judging actors/actresses for a long time. This is not the first time they handed out awards.”
KK
It’s hard to understand your English…
Anyway KRW may be amazing in Punch but a network station has go be faithful to its reason for existence. If less ppl watch the shows on the station, who will advertise and who will pay the workers and actors? Be realistic all you who criticize the stations for recognizing actors or shows with high ratings. – you guys are not paying. Most of you are watching online for free! So stop acting like you own the world or giving out the awards.
hahaha…your comment cracks me up but it’s well said. I guess KK used crappy Google translate that doesn’t translate at all. LOL
Joo Won deserves the award. He did an impressive job in Good Doctor but rarely did Koala or readers of this blog recognize him in a positive way. Rather, ppl all gave dang attention to some actors/actresses who I consider bland or sloppy or over the top or or nothing good or even bad to say about. LOL…Yong Pal is probably the only one at the 2nd half of year 2015 that saved my viewership of K drama – the only drama during the past few months that I was able to sit through the end without dozing off. If K drama keeps rambling the same predictable cliches or running romantic gimmicks, my spare time for drama will be totally given up to C entertainment.
what the hell are you saying? I barely understand it.
opps i replied the wrong post, i wanted to reply kk’s post.
sorry
sorry
Joo Won as an actor deserves a Daesang (he should’ve had it for Good Doctor, imho). but the Yongpal character wasn’t Daesang worthy at all.
I would’ve given it to Yoo Ah In, just cause the guy is just amazing on screen. but, this was Kim Rae Won’s award.
Just to note, i find it unfortunate that 6 Flying Dragons won’t be nominated for 2016 anymore. I feel that it’s at the latter stage of the drama when Yoo Ah In would showcase superb acting as Lee Bang Won, trying to become King Taejong. it’s really too bad that this drama might be forgotten later this year.
As a fan of YAI, I tried hard to sit through 6 flying Dragons. But to my great disappointment, the confusing complex court politics in incomprehensible Korean history bored me to death and I just dozed off most of the time while watching it. I never got past episode 2. LOL. It’s a pity the drama seems only tailored to Korean viewers. To be honest, it’s a bit hard for international viewers like me to be interested in the plot with all the hard-to-register names of so many historical figures in English subs.
Episode 2 was still an early stage to judge. Yoo Ah In appeared in full force around episode 3 or 4. That’s when they keep up the game.
As a fan of YAI?!! did he even appear in episode 2 ? and please don’t speak from the point of view of all international fans. i’m not korean; i don’t have any historical knowledge over SFD yet i don’t have any difficulty understanding it. in fact, this drama (given it keeps up the quality till the end) will most probably top my favorite list. and will be there for years.
I think Yoo Ah In is worth the Daesang for his acting in SFD too. But since the drama was still half way through, they just gave him the top excellence acting award. I also think that Kim Myung Min deserves the Daesang. For the next 2016 SBS Drama Awards, I think this drama will still be nominated though I’m not sure it will get many like they did in 2015.
PD Awards for Kim Rae Won is a prove for his convincing acting and scene stealler in Punch !!!
Congrats and happy for Joo won.
No offense to Shin se kyung, Moon geun young and Joo ji hoon..but i will definitely pick Kim hee ae, Soo ae and Yoon jeung hoon than them.
Congratz for all , and Moonie yay yay yay Popopopopopo haha ??????
Do we really need a TV station’s Award ceremony in order to acknowledge KRW’s and JJH’s undeniable acting talent? That’s not debatable and they will always be superb artists no matter the projects, the ratings, the netizens, nor age or the cliques.
