Official Posters for The Marvels Hollywood Movie has Park Seo Joon Looking Absolutely Unfortunate in Styling

This week kicks off the full scale promos for the upcoming Hollywood movie The Marvels, the follow up to Captain Marvel and another entry into the Marvel Universe films. K-actor Park Seo Joon got a lot of press when he was cast as a supporting character continuing the Korean actors and actresses getting Hollywood roles. But when the first teaser preview came out it was total lulz at how awful his onscreen styling look and now the official character poster hammers that home. It’s like the coordi on that movie set hates him but the logical reason is that his character is probably douchey and maybe an antagonist hence the dorktastic hair and comic book outfits.

  1. His foundation shade is so off. Next time any Asian actors signing up for these films should bring aboard their own makeup artists, or if that’s too much, their own foundation bottles.

    • I have to say most likely that is his natural color because K and C dramas tend to lighten their stars’ skin tones several shades with either makeup, lighting, filters and photoshop.

      • I agree. East Asian stars all have a different skin shade when in home + abroad. That is not Hollywood’s fault, that is the fault of K-ent or C-ent idolizing white skin. This is also the reason why Japanese actors always look more tanned: the Japanese have worked more into assuming their real colour tone and use less make-up, filters and the like.

      • @Amaranth Yes, I was going to point this out too, he looks so orange! I mean, I get that Korean stylists tend to make K-stars look pale AF with too-light foundations, but the foundation shade here is wrong too. Anyone who has watched western makeup tutorials can attest that westerners have an obsession with using too-dark, warm-toned, orange foundation even when their natural skintones are light and cool-toned, similar to East Asians’ obsession with using too-light and too cool-toned foundation/BB creams

  2. Well hollywood is never kind to asian actors, the styling at base always tries to un-handsome or un-sexy them to say at least

    • LOL…it’s the tight leather outfit and the 80’s feathered hair!

Wished PSJ had enough clout to say no to galactic asian Siegfried and demand cool badass alien villain aka Thanos, Loki or even Darth Maul. But hey, that’s how the dice rolls and at least he didn’t end up unrecognizable and looking like Jabba the Hutt!!!

As for Asians in western movies… Tony Leung looked ok in Shang-Chi and Donnie Yen looked fantastic in John Wick.

  3. It’s definitely not the usual handsome PSJ in the eyes of Kdrama fans. But this is how most Asians look like in Hollywood films. He’s not the worst yet. LOL I’m curious if he got paid well? Why taking a supporting role for a Hollywood film. I used to watch each marvel movie when I was younger on a mission as a guardian to take kids in the household to the theater. LOL. None has registered in my head and I can hardly recall any storylines. They are all forgettable! Why did PSJ have to take this role? Does he plan to move to Cali?

      • You’re delusional to think, that’s the reason at all. Most of them just curious how it’s to work in different environment and challenge themselves in a short term from their comfort zone.

  5. His styling is not great, but what is most important is : He is having lots of fun! He probably never expected to be in a Marvel production in his life. Better to be noticed then blending in.

    • I totally agree. Even for a super star in Korea, working in Hollywood is another level. I would do it too, just for the experience.

  6. Why you guys even expect them to be styled in usual k-drama style or like a guy from Asian fantasy drama? This is not you dramas. This is Hollywood cosmo-opera. He is playing a character from an alien world. They could be green, yellow, blue, bald, hairy, big, small and etc. No one bats an eye, when Hollywood actors take goofy roles or in a strange make up. But god forbid korean actors to take a role and everyone becomes a movie make up critics and expects their usual flower boy in a suit. If it happens good. If it’s not, it’s good too. It’s an interesting experience for a guy. Why you all so negative? This is not “unfortunate”. He is playing a role of an alien. And you all should consider context. Not just live in your k-drama bubble.
Seo Jun this past years is making really good choices when it comes to be different. His characters this past year all far from flower/handsome guys. I think he is on his experimenting stage. Good for him for being enthusiastic about his craft and wanting to try new things, where is not relaying in his face only.

    • I will always remember this which Whoopi Goldberg said:“When you’re a performer, you accept the gig. You take the gig. Sometimes, you’re in a Bozo suit, sometimes you got a big nose, and this is just the way it is,” she said. “We’re not journalists. We’re actors. We’re trying to get to another place.” And Seo Jun is in another place now… Have fun Seo Jun. I will watch the film.

    • That makes sense. When an actor like him with enough money, fame, and accomplishment in his own comfort zone of K drama land, it’s legit for a serious actor to venture out. You’re absolutely right about Hollywood actors who don’t really care about their images on screen looking charming or not when they want to deliver right storylines about their characters. I saw Asian drama actors are relatively more typecast perhaps thanks to idol culture. Who would have expected Michelle Yeoh to win an Oscar best actress award 20+ years later when she started her career in Hollywood back in 1997? I wish PSJ the best and have a lot of fun filming any projects.

    • I mean, no one is expecting him to look like a flower boy tho. PSJ isn’t even considered a flower boy by KDrama fans, he’s considered one of the manlier actors compared to the likes of Cha Eunwoo or something. But this styling ain’t it. Yes, he shouldn’t be made pretty, but they can make him menacing without giving him an unflattering hairstyle. Because yes, the hairstyle here is unflattering, the top part of his hair is flat AF, making him look odd and goofy and kinda hard to take seriously as a villain.

Also, you’re totally ignoring Hollywood’s history of making Asian and other POC actors look bad. As the other commenter said, Hollywood isn’t known to be kind to Asian actors and always try to make them look “un-sexy” to keep the nerdy, small-peepee stereotype alive. Come on now

Yes, KDrama fans can be annoying and whiny, but this case isn’t just them whining that their oppa wasn’t prettified, come on now

  7. On the one hand, sticking Korean actors into Western media is one of the few ways to get me to watch a Western film/show. On the other hand, I agree with so many comments above that regardless if the actor is playing a protagonist, antagonist, or side character, somehow Hollywood always manages to diminish Asian actors. It could be the styling, it could be limiting what kind of roles Asians play, it could be just always keeping them on the sidelines, but I always seem to come away thinking, man, they had soooo much potential with this actor, and they completely missed it.

Hoping this one will prove me wrong, but…it’s much more likely that I’ll just go back to watching Asian media, instead.

    • I honestly don’t think Hollywood did disservice to Asian visuals and styles on purpose. It’s most likely thanks to lacking sense and knowledge/experience about bringing the best out of Asian facial features. I’ve seen this on both Asian actors and actresses for DECADES. Also in real life, I’ve seen how American hairdressers unable to have the best haircuts done for my male relatives around me. Taking my teenage relative for example, whenever he got haircuts in the American barber shop nearby, they always gave him a Kim Jong Un look. LOL. But if he went to a Korean hairdresser, he would come back looking more like a Kpop idol. The contrast is so stark that promoted me to ask the American barber if it’s difficult for him to work on Asian hairs. He said Asian hairs feel different (thicker and tougher) from westerners’ in touch and it was a bit harder for him to work on that.

Also you’re wrong about how Hollywood treats Asian ppl working in the American film industry. Given that how many Asian directors, writers and actors etc. have won or been nominated for Oscar awards for years, Hollywood has higher regard for Asians than any other minorities in the States. You can google how many Asians actors and directors etc. have been in the lists of Oscar nominees. considering Asians have the lowest population among the various ethnic groups in the States, Hollywood have been treating Asians quite well IMO.

For Asian-centric films from Hollywood, I highly recommend the following critically acclaimed films directed by Asian directors or led by Asian actors who have been either Oscar winners or nominated recently:

Parasite, Nomadland, Minari, Everything Everywhere All at Once.

      • Is Parasite from Hollywood? I thought that was Korean through and through, but received accolades on the international scale including Palme d’Or and best picture at the Academy Awards.

I really enjoyed Minari as well, and second the highly recommend. I have yet to watch Everything Everywhere All at Once, but will do so soon!

      • @Soph, Nope! Parasite is completely Korean made. But my point is Hollywood has high regard for Asian-centric films as long as the quality is good. There’s no bias in reviewing Asian films or treating Asian-related productions lightly.

I highly recommend Everything Everywhere All at Once. It’s critically acclaimed by many film critics. But some ppl may find it wacky, not up their street.

  8. I just gave very few examples of Asian-centric films promoted in Hollywood. The list is not exhaustive. I don’t know where and how Asian drama fans got this idea that the American filming industry has been taking Asians lightly. Nope! To the opposite, I’ve seen Asian-centric films promoted way more than anywhere else around the world outside Asia. Asian professionals working in Hollywood have had very prominent presence since Ang Lee won the Academy awards twice.

  9. The racism towards Asians in Hollywood has been well documented so this is hardly surprising. At least it is not a total disaster and I am sure he did it for the experience which does count. He remains a huge star in Korea and this won’t hurt him.

  10. A lot of non English-speaking native actors/actress in Hollywood are getting type cast in a specific way leading them to have unfortunate hair or make-up.
Although, typecasting is the big issue. not the make-up.
Over the years Hollywood is getting better of being a little more sensitive. Still, there are just a few examples of foreign non-english natives, who got the opportunity to have a varsatile career in Hollywood. That’s not a specific Asian thing.

    • I do agree, that it is easier for foreign white looking actors/actresse to even get access to Hollywood than for POC and Asians. The system as a whole should be less discriminating

  11. I have to say, this is Marvel, so I’m not expecting him to look “normal” or styled to be super handsome like “Crazy Rich Asians.” I thought all the Asian people looked fine in Shang Chi, so I’m going to trust that he looks like this because of some story need and not just because they’re bad at their jobs.

Also, to clarify, he’s not playing a villain. He’s playing a prince from another planet.
