This week was the press conference for Doona! with Suzy and Yang Se Jong and the two leads were matching in formal attire. I think they will look adorable onscreen together but K-netizens were less than happy with Yang Se Jong at the press conference because he looked chubbier. I agree he doesn’t look his best but he’s not fat by any measure of weight and his suit is also poorly tailored on him. He had to actually explain that he did gain weight (about 6kg) since the drama wrapped filming since he’s in his off season but promised that his visuals will look top shape in the drama. Poor dude getting the same superficial treatment as the ladies.
Same high expectations everywhere. Doona! is premiering today on Netflix, right? Will try it out this weekend.
I like yang se Jong. I think he is talented but just need the right role and script.
The fit of his suit is terrible. They should have just put him in a regular suit. He doesn’t have the swag or proportions to make this look work unfortunately.
I’m all for men having to endure the scrutiny women have to endure. Suzy would get dragged 10x worse if she turned up with extra weight and puffy face to a drama promo event. Actresses don’t get to have an “off season” when they are in the public eye and certainly not during scheduled drama promotion.
Agree. It’s not only weight it would be minute details about the face, the hair everything. Maintaining a healthy weight is the least an actor can do. Suzy looks so ethereal and beautiful, that he looks so odd against him. Remember Ren Min, and how she got trolled. She is not even bad looking.

Absolutely. I mean, I’m not saying it’s right that K-Netz scrutinize the heck out of celebrities’ appearances, but if they’re going to scrutinize women, then they gotta have the same energy for men, so I guess in a twisted way, I’m kinda glad that they’re also scrutinizing the male this time.
Ideally tho, I wish celebs of all genders don’t have to endure all this intense scrutiny, but I guess visuals really is a big part of K-ent, and as the other commenter said, looking their best is an unspoken part of the job

@Lu. Yes it can cause retinal and macular damage. Unfortunately if retina or macula gets damaged, no amount of medicines, surgery or laser can restore it. People need to be mindful of stuff which involves injecting stuff into the body. The good old purging after eating is still better 🤦♀️. Since that will not cause long term harm.

It’s the same in many countries, not just Korea. Image is very important in this industry and part of that is looks but it has the consequence that many end up being very unhealthy, in one way or another, because of the stress. I sure couldn’t live under such scrutiny, no matter the money.
In my Country, skinny image is not applied. It is really down to personality, connections, acting skills and hard work. I have seen too many all size celebs. Very different from US, Korea, Japan and China.
“Image is very important…” That’s bcos K-ent and C-ent sell more idol dramas in the market. Visuals are the basic elements entailed for idol dramas. I used to watch quite a lot of idol dramas when starting exposure to Kdrama years ago but not that much now. It’s getting stale. Idol dramas are like soap operas in the US that attract very limited market of viewership. Therefore, I don’t see the scale of emphasis on looks of actors in the US. Acting and charisma matter the most here.
That being said, I’ve seen K-ent is gravitating more and more towards Hollywood in terms of production quality and story telling, less focus on idol-ish styles. I just binged and wrapped up Moving yesterday. The K version of Marvel series has pretty good production values and amazing plot keeping me sitting on the edge of my chair ep after ep. No filters were used and lighting all looked pretty natural unlike most C dramas. Han Hyo-joo and Zo In-sung (HHJ in particular) used to be big names in idol dramas but they looked mundane in Moving with skin looking rough close up.
I’ve seen a lot of men get hit with the same skinny beauty standard as the women; especially if they gain in the face like Lee MinHo or an idol like Taemin who gets ragged on right after he gets out of the military. I read recently that the skinny look was losing favor in Korea for a more natural figure, but I’m having my doubts.
In my country ,looks are less important. Most of our popular dramas have actors/ actresses who are over 40 years, they have wrinkles, some are overweight,…but they are good in their roles , it’s like the characters were tailored for them .If they were in Korea they wouldn’t get a chance as lead role .It doesn’t mean that all actors don’t complain about the fact that image is also important and they get their share of malicious comments but not like in Korea . If koreans would watch our dramas they would probably faint ! Koreans are perfectionist but perfection can also be boring .I like to watch Kdramas but most of time they put a lot on the visuals of the leads . Both look overly tired and the stylist didn’t choose the right suit for the poor guy. Knetizens should be more lenient . They are humans not dolls !

Same here in the US. Plenty of well versed actors/actresses in the US still got lead roles into mid age or even older, really depending on the context of the scripts. Ppl would watch them regardless of their looks/shapes obviously getting aged. But in Asia? At least not that much in S. Korea nor in China, I think.
I’ll be checking out this drama for Suzy, not knowing much about the ML. Suzy impressed me so much in Anna. A side note, she’s getting slimmer than what I can remember before.
Suzy is finally shedding her idol image to becoming an actress. Her skinner face probably relates to losing some baby fat as she ages. Tough comments on the ML… depending on his drama character (which I don’t know yet), looking his part is the basic requirement of an actor, isn’t it? Some needs to gain loads of weight to play the part, while some needs to maintain the visuals… it is just the basic expectation of drama industry. They got paid for appearing in press conference.

It was my first time watching this actor Mr.Yan Se-Jong in Doo-na so to me he was very handsome and I admire him for tolerating all the smoke from Suzy. That was the only thing ugly about this series the promoting of the cigarette .Other than that it was a good drama. I agree he needs to loose those extra pounds for his next project image is very important on tv.

I never said it’s good. Bulimia is not good at all, bu What I am trying to say is that ozempic is not good, why people cannot understand what I am trying to say. Ozempic is usually given to people with diabetes but many diabetics have diabetic retinopathy which causes total no light perception blindness and Ozempic can fast forward decline to retinopathy. I know many people who died due to bulimia for sure but knowingly imbibing medicines which can cause NLP visual loss is scary as hell. That’s what I am trying to say. If anyone chooses to take Ozempic please undergo an eye test first to check if you are at risk for retinal damage or macular damage.
