Chinese Paladin Remake Sword and Fairy with He Yu and Yang Yu Tong to Premiere on April 2nd
In a case of “no one asked for this”, the remake of Chinese Paladin basically the C-drama based on the first game in the Sword and Fairy game series is coming out April 2nd so Tuesday. In a year where two other Sword and Fairy dramas have premiered to middling reception, namely Sword and Fairy based on the 4th game with Ju Jing Yi and Chen Zhe Yuan and Sword and Fairy 6 based on the 6th game with Xu Kai and Yu Shu Xin, one wonders why drop this one now and not let a bit more time pass with the Sword and Fairy stories. The first game was made into the hit C-drama starring Hu Ge and Crystal Liu way back when and the exact same story is now being adapted into Sword and Fairy the drama with fresh-faced leads He Yu and Yang Yu Tong. I feel checking this out will be due to curiosity, nostalgia, or nothing else to do, but contrary to my earlier meh when it was announced I’m a smidge more interested as male lead He Yu is really engaging my fancy playing derpy twink heavenly prince Fu Rong in The Legend of Shen Li and he’s just fantastic with the animated acting and making an annoying character rather entertaining.
Chinese Paladin remake Sword and Fairy:
Both Liu Yi Fei and this Yang Yu Tong are plain janes. So basic looking. LYF is lucky she has money and power behind her. Any other actress with that face but without that background would get bashed for being ugly. China’s actress visuals are really bad when compared to S Korea and Japan.
I concur about LYF, but I don’t think she was rich or had connections to begin with. I don’t know anything about Yang Yu Tong. Everyone has their own opinions though
LYF grew up rich since her mom remarried a wealthy man. She is also the goddaughter of Chen Jin fei, CEO of Beijing Tongchan Investment Group and one of China’s richest entrepreneurs in 2000 according to Forbes. He established a media company called Hongxingwu for her and the studio only manages one artist which is her.
@lillie Wow, no wonder LYF’s been given roles after roles. Her looks aren’t anything special, even as Xiao LvngNu, her most iconic role. At least compared to Carmen Lee, she is miles behind. And although her acting has improved, it’s nothing to write home about. This makes a lot of sense now.
You can stop pretending with your lies.
The famous author of Condor Heroes hand picked Liu Yifei.
At least she has connections and didn’t sleep her way up like some poor chicks with no backgrounds, lots of wives and children from goldmasters aren’t happy with poor women like that.
Woah, this is the first time I’m hearing LYF is basic. I always found her to be extremely beautiful. She has ethereal looks. But I guess to each their own.
Agree with you! I always thought that a fairy or a goddess role suits her perfectly because of her beautiful face. I never find her basic.
Oh, I find Chinese actresses prettier than South Korean and Japanese ones. South Korea and Japan lead the plastic surgery rankings lol. But if Liu Yi Fei is average/plain, you should look like her or better, right?
On what basis do you make your comment that South Korean/Japanese women are more beautiful than Chinese women? Based on Liu Yi Fei and her popularity? Based on plastic surgery rankings? Or have you seen every Chinese, South Korean, Japanese production to make a detailed dissection? I would like to know, it would be interesting.
I’m not holding high hopes for this anymore. I saw another version of the trailer and Zhao Linger has standing red hair when she turned into her “snake” form. I didn’t play the game so I’ve no idea if it’s following the game character to the tee or what, but it doesn’t fit the image I have of Nuwa descendants.
But who know, maybe after my expectations get lowered, it might give me a pleasant surprise.
For a sec, I thought Yang Yutong was Yuan Bingham in that drama poster
Even thru Hu Ge was very young when he was the lead actor, I found him very charming and very entertaining to watch. He acting was not mature then but it was natural and he own the role as a young ‘Stinky Punk’ Li Xiao Yao . I have not seen new actors that ease into their role so easily.
But it is good to watch new artistes instead of the rotation of the few liuliangs.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but the early Sword & Fairies with Hu Ge had successes because they were relatively new/few at their time. I don’t think the storyline, acting, or anything were particularly good. Now these types of dramas/stories are a dime a dozen, audiences no longer feel the novelty, so they’ll never see the same success as their predecessors.
So true! I agree with this, which was why I didn’t bother to watch CP 4 and 6 when it came out. These series has a lot of CGI effects and the OGs were relatively new when they came out. Nowadays, I feel like this genre is geared more towards younger audiences or old fans that still follows or plays CP or you just want to watch the artist’s work.
Agreed. I’ve never been appealed to this series, be it old legend claimed by the CP fans or the ones following the original. Last time checking CP4 and CP6, I once confirmed that I could never be a fan. The storylines are too childish to my liking. Xianxia has been lacking new ideas for a long while.
But there are acclaimed critics who approve of this series in the same way they approve of The Untamed. Why take only what is convenient for us, ignoring critical thinking?
The FL looks okay, not breathtakingly beautiful; she didn’t catch my attention as much as LYF did. The original one was a classic, but I hope this new version cuts down on the parts that were draggy in the OG one especially with him constantly being with the 2nd FL for most of the series.
I only enjoyed the scenes between Hu Ge & Liu Yi Fei in the first Chinese Paladin. I also found it annoying and draggy that they had the ml & sfl spent most of the screen time together. It was like they forgot who the fl was.
LYF always appears bland to me. Only her skin is good. Nothing else has stood out even during her heydays.
LYF’s acting shortcomings are very visible in her projects. But I think she did considerably well in Meet Yourself though the show was mainly resting on Li Xian’s shoulders. She’s probably the only actress I watch nonetheless because she’s pretty to look at.
Liu Yi Fei is a better actress. I am happy she is back in dramaland and I found her alluring in “A dream of Splendor”
There are definitely Chinese actresses prettier than her. She depends a lot on makeup and angles, anyone could look pretty that way. But I still consider South Korean and Japanese actresses/actors inferior in appearance compared to the Chinese ones. Xiao Zhan (he’s not even my favorite) only beats most of the proclaimed handsome South Korean/Japanese actors in looks. The Chinese have more variety. Even if there is plastic surgery, they do not lead lists like South Korea or Japan.
Looks good. Next will be replaced with AI’s. No need for any human contacts. lol.
LYF is good in modern dramas but I don’t like her in costumes. She has obvious modern mannerisms that she can’t or doesn’t want to get rid of when in costumes and it drives me crazy. But I enjoyed her modern day dramas.
In any case, the original wasn’t anything special. It would have been criticised in the same way if it premiered now. I have hope for this one either.
On a shallow side those new actresses lack the striking visuals of Liu Yi Fei and Ady An.
I wasn’t planning on watching this drama until I read that the lead actor is the same person who acted as Furong in Legend of Shen Li. The dude is as funny as hell, and his sense of comedic timing is impeccable and impressive. In this case, I am a new fan and will definitely check out the first few episodes.
The only issue with LYF’s acting was, there’s no issue at all but she has too much jealousy haters. Females hate to see other women prettier than themselves. Aside from a beautiful face, LYF is a professional dancer so she has a perfect figure as well. Almost each and every women wish they are flexible to perform traditional chinese dance that is similar to ballet, and perform martial arts, all skills which most of us do not have but LYF possesses them all. It’s hard not to hate LYF. She has a very good style in her acting, especially when she was still younger. Fan Bing Bing does too. As both ladies got older, kept casting as icy cold beauties, they indeed turned boring but doesn’t mean they have no acting skills.
The new Ling’er looks more like Zhao Lusi. Either she went to the doctor to stretch her eyes bigger, or she keeps stretching her eyes big the whole time, it does not look good. Very obnoxious. The only times she is a little bearable is when she speaks new lines of her own, all the lines she tries to copy from the old Ling’er are soooooooooooooo bad and cringy.
The actor has a frozen face. I wish Zi Rui, who was Zhao Lusi’s slave in Rose and Tiger, play as Li Xiaoyao instead. He has lots of ranges. This new actor is not ugly, but not handsome either, and has 0 expression.
Not sure how poor this production is. I laughed to death so many times. The horrible camera angles! They cannot afford slow motion effect, Ling’er and Xiao Yao had to act out slow motion during the wedding. Since they made changes to the story, they should not force insert the old scripts abruptly, they no longer make sense with the new storyline. Also, the scene Ling’er gave Xiao Yao the medicine right away as if she forced him to sleep with her in trade of medicine, what the heck was that?
