Wartime Era Espionage C-drama Dark Night and Dawn with Chen Zhe Yuan, Nie Yuan, and Xing Fei to Air on September 19th
I would say Q1 2024 was not the best for C-actor Chen Zhe Yuan getting all that negative online chatter over his maybe casting and later not casting in C-drama Love on the Turquoise Land with Dilraba Dilmurat due to billing position issues. But like all things it died down and his fans went back to waiting for his finished dramas to air and it was supposed to be modern romance The White Olive Tree with Liang Jie that just looks like inspired by Descendants of the Sun. I heard a few times Olive Tree was gearing up for premiere but nothing came of it, and now his other finished drama the period wartime espionage and politics thriller Dark Night and Dawn (暗夜与黎明) is reportedly getting airdropped next week on September 19th. The period spy and politics thriller did well for Wang Yibo this past spring with his War of Faith so let’s see how this one fares for Chen Zhe Yuan.

He has many casting rumors now. Shuang Gui with Esther Yu and Flower in Novoland with Zhang Jingyi. Despite the negative rumors I think it won’t affect his resources as his company is backed by iQiyi.
Im looking forward to
According to the synopsis, Chen plays a former police officer in Shanghai in 1943,then the plot moves 6 years later, which would make his character in his 30s. I don’t get why producers cast young actors to play roles that demand a certain gravitas due to age and other circumstances, it almost always end as cosplay. At the same time, they hire actors in their thirties to play college students or something. It would seem casting directors would be wiser than that.
That why it called ‘acting’ in the first place.
Age is not a question of acting. Cast the best actor in his twenties to play a man in his 40s, he will look silly. Cast an excellent actor in his forties to play a college student, he will look like the other kids dad.
Agree with you but I think some actors can still pull that off. I don’t think czy can tho…
U dont play a character just because u look like it but u have to act it out.
And still make it believable!
It’s not acting skills, if you look fresh out of high school playing a 30 something grounded man or if you look obviously your 30 something years and I as a viewer should belive your a freshman college student
At least have the make-up team age you up convincingly. And for the other way around, give an age appropriate actor a chance to play the younger part.
Apart from that, acting quality always outshine handsome features. I wished casting director would go for quality instead of beauty and hugh fandoms
Excited
Im looking forward to
I think Chen Zheyuan has great potential, his agency just needs to stop rushing things and he will be fine. I’ll try to watch this drama when it airs. I’m also looking forward to the Li Qin one, i dont really find Olive Tree interesting but i might take a look.
He is supposed to play someone in his 30s and he looks 12. It’s hilariously awful casting.
God forbid that people can’t look young when they turn 30! Lol geez people, it’s called acting for a reason. You see them casting older actors to play 18 year olds most of the time and most often they look too old and we just pretend that they do look it.
Asians tend to look young so is it much of stretch to think that a man still looks great in his 30s? Look at Jimmy Lin.
It was terrible when ZZY pretend to be a teenager when she was way over 30, just as much as this is terrible.
When a “cold ceo” looks 12 it’s also terrible like the guy in that Zhao Lusi drama.
This is terrible too. It’s all terrible.
Cast age appropriate people!
It not that bad imo, chinese stars have youthful features, that why even in their twenty, they look younger but we know he is not 12 years lol.
It ‘ACTING’,that why one genre always have different projects in. Which means that u can watch the one that suit ur criteria. I feel like in most situations like this the young actors want to get out of their comfort zone and stretch their acting capacity and try something different and there is nothing wrong with this. They all need to start somewhere in picking certain roles. In their type of industry, u want them to get older before they try certain roles, it going to feel too late. Sorry to mention Yang mi but look at how if feel like she is struggling to get into serious characters because she has played it safe for so long , imagine her start earlier, she would have find her grove by now.
He will have moments of over acting…but I think if script is good, the casts is strong, Chen Zheyuan will do okay. But I am unsure he will shine, he is up against many artistes who will shine. Even Xing Fei is a calmer actress then he is.
Forgot to mention the experienced veterans are very strong and dynamic actors.
He said in an interview that he felt that as if he goes back to square one and struggling to keep up with the casts. So yeah he definitely did what you fear but I think he learnt a great lesson with this drama.
The rest of the cast are solid..very experienced. He can learn so much from them. This is his chance to grow.
@HL
And ruin dramas while he “grows”. Funny how none of these upstarts want to grow through supporting roles but will only take major lead roles. And you all support this nonsense and then at the same time, complain about the quality of cdrama. Smh
@PDr, I think u should be angry at c ent fans , the are the ones who push their fave into lead actors quickly, we are just looking at it from a different perspective.
@PDr, I sound like I support the practise of giving lead roles to idols who cannot act? Really? You are so presumptuous, you clearly do not read my comments often.
As for Chen Zhe Yuan, he has potential as a actor.. not ready for big roles but suitable for romantic idol dramas. But he is growing steadyly.
I can’t get over the fact that Nie Yuan is second lead to this kid.
You and me both. Just by standing there Nie Yuan has more screen presence and charisma than Chen Zheyuan in the entire trailer.
It’s not the age of the acting of the actor that would be the major issue. Most likely the content and the messages that state propaganda wants to deliver through the pretty face and his popularity would be a hard sale for savvy viewers.
“State propaganda wants to deliver through the pretty face” Love ❤️ this! So true.
Better then a face like Trump..
Perhaps to you disappoint, I’m more likely to vote a pouting face like Trump than a zero-dollar-shopping face like Harris. LOL.
I am unsure on how popular Harris is too. I dont get disappointed as I am not voting in US thus I do not judge others.
“..to your disappointment..” Sorry I had a lot of typos missing key strokes recently cos my mind was somewhere else most of the time. LOL. Both Trump and Harris have noticeable weakness. But judging their past accomplishments/bad track records, it’s no brainer whom to vote. Does Harris even have any accomplishments other than those which fabricated by the leftard media? LMAO.
Foreigners can have their own opinions about American politics. It’s totally fine. But it’s about American interest at the end. I’ll vote based on that, not foreigners’ opinions.
Leftard media? As opposed to the right wing MAGA cult propaganda.
As an American, I won’t be supporting a convicted felon, fraudster, who may be sentenced to jail time in November, if he’s not filing for bankruptcy for the SEVENTH time, over the billion USD he owes from losing his defamation and fraud and tax evasion trials.
And that isn’t even getting into his two federal trials for the January 6 insurrection / campaign interference and for stealing classified documents, as well as his Georgia state racketeering charges.
So, yes, Trump has a record, that Harris doesn’t have … one for illegal activities and failure. With his felony conviction and multiple bankruptcy bad credit rating, he literally could not get a decent job or work in most other government positions, so he certainly shouldn’t be the President of the USA.
this wack blog is an expert at posting their own ridiculous assumptions as news but can’t even be bothered to get simple facts right.
this drama is airing on the 18th not on the 19th. it’s also not being “airdropped”, it’s getting a primetime slot on cctv, a regular schedule on iqiyi and really good promotions too I might add.
also wang yibo’s war of faith aired in spring of this year not fall of last year.
maybe spend less time pushing rampant gossip from weibo as headline news and more time researching accurate info.
With such solid supporting casts and storyline , it will surprise me if they dont get Primetime slot on TV. But good to know on date of airing. Thanks.
