Tencent to Premiere Period C-drama The Rise of Ning with Zhang Wan Yi and Ren Min on October 10th

It’s rare to see an actor or actress have three lead role dramas airing in such short proximity and it’s happening for Zhang Wan Yi. He was male lead in Lost You Forever Part 2 which actually should have really accentuated his character based on the story line in the second half of the LYF novel but the drama editing hack job hurt him immensely. Then a month later in August came Are You the One which I really enjoyed (like but not total love) but despite him being top billed his female lead Wang Chu Ran got more boost from it. And now next week on October 10th his drama The Rise of Ning with Ren Min arrives and all eyes will be on how this fares. I have been liking the posters and trailer so far and despite his styling looking so similar to his look in Are You the One the two dramas based on the trailer feel very different in a good way.

  1. He is a very measured actor, but not in a natural way. I feel like he smiles, cries, gets angry, and looks at someone intensely because that’s what the director told him, not because he felt the character. It’s like those kids’ drawing books, where we connect the dots based on numbers to form an animal but without any soft edges or curves. I can’t say much about Ren Min, as I only saw her in white cat’s Legend and found her acting to be weak there.

    • OMG! Someone spoke of my mind about ZWY. I think he CAN act but sometimes his acting approaches appeared very calculated, not natural. That’s why he can never be an actor I like. That being said, I still think he’s the best one among the three MLs in Lost You Forever.

    • This. He runs the risk of coming off the same in his costume dramas – already people are criticising he doesn’t look or speak any different from Are You the One.

  2. I’ve seen him in shows outside of what he’s usually known for (LYF & AYTO) such as The Bond and A Long Way Home and honestly he’s good

  3. looking forward to this! he’s such a charismatic and talented actor. he got to show his excellent comedy chops in are you the one, now back to his roots with a dramatic role with this one. i’ve never seen ren min in anything, but she looks well-suited for the role in the trailer.

  4. Ren Min has gotten some plastic surgery so she looks slightly better but she still isn’t meant for dramas like these. Depends on her screen time if she will sink this drama like she did TLP.

      • @Nene

Her photos before the work done are easy to find. It was a disaster. Much better now, she had more after TLP. She destroyed that drama. Killed it dead. And it wasn’t just her look. She isn’t half the actress that they are hyping her to be. Plus TLP was the second costume drama she butchered, not the first.

Eh, we will see if this one can at least be watchable.

      • @Lol what was there to kill it?! Production team butcher the novel & characters big time. You are simply hating on female lead u dont even need a reason for it…

  5. RM and ZWY look compatible visually and acting-wise. Neither one is visually attractive and their acting…..solid but theatrically over-dramatic sometimes that appeared…fake. I don’t dislike them, depending on plots. The trailer looks interesting though.

  6. ZWY’s makeup is much better in here compare to “Are You The One”. His face was so white and lips were so red in that one that it was so distracting.

This trailer looks very good. Will definitely check it out.

    • Yea I thought he looked better here. Both styling and costume. He made quite an impression in LYF maybe because the role suits him. I think he is suited more as an emperor/prince rather than a general/ warrior.

  7. In Are you the one…the male leads tone of speaking is so annoying at times his voice is loud and then he lowers his voice like he’s mumbling. If he fixed this I’m sure his acting would have been different it is just the oddest tone of speaking. It irritated me but the drama was interesting despite this but still it made me want to smack his back and tell him to speak clearly.
