Blossom with Meng Zi Yi and Li Yun Rui on Track to Become a Solid Hit to End 2024 on a High Note with C-dramas

C-drama Blossom is now midway through airing and at this pace and with the continued strong reviews on track to become a much needed solid hit to end 2024 in C-drama land. It is also going to elevate leads Meng Zi Yi and Li Yun Rui to the next level up and both leads are already entertaining new drama offers neither would have gotten before this drama aired. Meng Zi Yi is especially lucky as she’s been in a middling state of her career for years now and this drama only fell into her lap when original female lead Angelababy got cancelled last year when she went to Lisa’s show in a Paris risque club. Li Yun Rui has always gotten good feedback for his acting but hasn’t broken out yet and in the past has been called rather bland and unforgettable in looks but now is getting lots of hotness leveling up from viewers for his role in this drama. Mucho congrats to both and if anyone is still on the fence it looks safe and worthwhile to check this one out.

So happy for these 2 artistes…they are well deserving of this high note. I am glad we have seeing more better produced works.
Yes. I love the show and both actors. Great to see them elevated. I like the slow burn…. up to episode 15 only ….
Agreed to see them have breakout success.
As much as I agree to give credit to the two leads, in my opinion the success of this drama is mainly due to the very creative script which steers clears of most of the usual worn out tropes. The writing feels fresh and unpredictable, in the early part of the drama the director had the courage to film nearly a whole episode with the leads’ younger versions to give us a full and detailed backstory.
The creative and beautiful cinematography also adds a lot to the appeal of this drama.
I hope some of the other producers will learn from this example.
Yes…better produced works are not just down to acting casts… it is everything else. I hope we will see more of such works soon.
It’s actually so good tho! Not only is the chemistry off the charts between the two leads but I love the story and how they established the strong female lead with sense. God knows how many failed “strong female lead” dramas we got this year from c-ent.
What little of Meng Zi Yi, I learned from snippets of her from variety shows, but she is good as Dou Zhao and aesthetically matched the feel of the character. I wouldn’t have imagined Yuen Shan Jian from LLTG in a Lin Bu Yi-like character but he’s killing it here, too. They are both charismatic in their characters, making it so easy to understand their connection. Also the directorrrrrr, he’s just great at capturing their sparks!
Best drama of 2024. I’m definitely a fan of the director (Zeng Qing Jie) and look forward to his future work.
It’s not the best 2024 C drama for me. I’m currently at ep 20. YET to see Blossom to be the Double 2.0. The Double still crowns 2024 dramas in my list. The best part of Blossom is the chemistry between the OTP and their visuals of course LOL. But the acting overall (main leads and supporting roles as well) is less impressive than the Double. I also think the directing of the Double is more artistic and the editing more seamlessly smooth (making sense) from scene to scene than Blossom. As to the storyline, Blossom is a hodgepodge of the Story of Minglan, Blossom in Adversity, and the Double. It’s not that unique bcos of all those recycled tropes used in the narratives. The pace is slow, unlike the Double always putting me on the edge of the chair. Blossom is an easier watch so to speak. BGM in Blossom is also a problem that I can’t stand as an avid music player and fan. That being said, I’m still enjoying the drama a lot given the love lines between the OTP. I’d say without the two main leads, I might not have so much fun following their story and might just drop the drama.
I already liked MZY and LYR in their prior dramas. MZY had very decent presence in the Untamed although her character was not in the original novel. It surprised me when one obnoxious judge in Everybody Stand By gave a very scathing remark about MZY, saying she’s ostentatious LOL. I also appreciated LYR as the 2nd ML in the Oath of Love that was the fist drama of his I watched. When LYR was the 2nd ML again in LLTG, I wondered when he would be given a shot for a leading role. But well he continued to be given supporting roles for several projects. I saw his great potential cos I think he’s handsome LOL and acting is consistently natural although there’s room to improve. Interestingly many consider him bland looking? He’s typical of a hot body build with an innocent/young/angelic/harmless face, totally my cup of tea. LOL. I’d say LYR is a taller version of nice looking Yang Yang who has potential to be an excellent actor. But compared with Wang Xing Yue, his acting is still not there yet.
I’m glad these two actors that I’m fond of finally have such a breakout hit drama before 30, which could open up great opportunities for their careers. I’m also looking forward to Princess Agents 2. LYR as the ML for PA is a better choice and good riddance of the boring ML in season 1.
I am having so many issues posting on the site now
I can only post if I use an incognito tab now. So annoying!
I’m still trying to fix all the glitches, there is also problems on mobile. I’m so sorry, please be patient!
@ockoala
: Thanks so much for replying to me
I do enjoy the posts and little community here so I would miss it. I will be patient and toggle between my regular tab and the incognito tab to comment here for now.
Yea I got bored after ep18 and checked out, so does my cousin. LYR acting is still lacking and I’m not really feeling the chemistry between the OTP. But credit to the directing and editing which makes everything alright. Honestly, not sure why this is better than Are You The One?
So good! best idol period drama this year, and even then I hesitate to call it an idol drama since it is alot more grounded in emotions/actions and the dialogue is appropriately classical. the leads have unexpected chemistry and i am rediscovering Li Yun Rui after his turn in Love like a Galaxy’s second male lead. But the best thing about this drama is the director and how he elevates what could have been a run-of-of-the mill period drama with pretty people. Boy oh boy, does he know how to tell a story! The delicious tension in those few pivotal dramatic scenes and the slow moving but squee-worthy push and pull between the leads. I realised I’ve watched a few of his short dramas and they were so beautifully shot for a supposedly low-budget short drama. Admirable for c-drama land where there is so much trashy work. For those who follow c-drama reviews, AvenueX (on YT) just did a review on it if you need help deciding whether to invest the time. This is ending a mediocre drama watching year on a banger for me, and I wish they would upload new episodes faster!
I am impressed with the directing and scriptwriting for this one. They rewrite the story to start the first episode with a bang to capture the viewers’ attention. Also, there are obvious baddies and many heart-wrenching moments, especially in the beginning when the female lead’s mum and the male lead’s uncle die. I enjoyed Are You The One more, but I can see how the ratings did not take off for that one as it starts slow and everything is all nice and easy in the beginning. Also, the directing is not as sophisticated …quite a bit of OTP moments could have been better treated.
Kinda stuck at ep 20 now. But the first half was good tho. Will finish it eventually.
Congratulation to the actors and crews. Deserved.
I really enjoyed this director’s other work such as A Familiar Stranger, Provoke and Butterflied Lover. I think he’s a pretty good story teller. I thought it started out pretty strong, and I like that the leads actually communicate and talk. Noble idiocy tends to be short-lived. However, I’m not loving the last few episodes where we’re spending a lot of time on the arc between his brother and her friend.
I’m also glad the female lead wasn’t Angelababy. I have tried quite a few of her dramas and can never sit through her “acting”. I acknowledge Meng Ziyi isn’t the best actress out there, but she’s serviceable. Angelababy’s “acting” is so bad that it literally takes me out of the show.
It was better than most time trip dramas so far but still dragged a bit and focused so much on side characters a bit much. Also the flow of story was interesting but at times confused me due to the many characters and trying to keep tabs on who was who and what side they stood on. Some actors resembled each other too… like some male villains and even the empress and crown princess looked similar that I was like wait lol. That is my only gripe about the show. It was interesting how certain characters were killed off too. So nice drama but at times hard to follow the timeline from past to present the way they showed it and I know it was done to bring more intrigue but still at times left me confused.
