Unveil: Jadewind with Bai Lu and Wang Xing Yue Wraps Quick Run with Decent Viewership Outing
I personally prefer dramas that I either love, hate, or love to hate, and it’s actually worse when a drama bores me or doesn’t hook me at all for whatever reason. That’s how I feel about recently aired period C-drama Unveil: Jadewind with Bai Lu and Wang Xing Yue. I watched the first episode hoping for the same cheesy but fun mystery as The Wanted Detective but ended up utterly cold. The mysteries from the outset aren’t very interesting and the two leads feel like they are going through the motions, Bai Lu is acting like this is for a paycheck and Wang Xing Yue is doing his best robot impression, and they have negative chemistry with each other lol. I do hear it gets better and I may end up giving it another shot with a few more episodes, but sadly the first impression is meh from me.

The direction and pacing of the plot didn’t hook me in the first three episodes, but I’ll give it one more chance to see if there is any miraculous momentum.😂
Wang Xing Yue’s looks did not hook me either…sadly.
Bai Lu surprised me during her time as a rising actress, but now I’ve noticed that she’s “comfortable” using the same mannerisms drama after drama. She can act but the repetitive bores me. In the three episodes I watched, Wang Xing Yue, on the other hand, is restricted in his facial expressions. Before, I only saw him in The Double and he left a good impression on me.
As I have always maintained, WHY doesn’t have what it takes. His few frozen expressions and charisma of a dead fish is not going to make him a star
In East and West there are actors who lack skills, with no intention of improving in what their job is supposed to be, but they are generating buzz here and there as long as they have physical attractiveness to “sell”, or strong backers. They don’t necessarily need to have what it takes to be a star. Lol.
The cases were rather intense and lax at times but their chemistry as a couple felt forced but story wise it was intriguing. My favorite part of the drama was when the female leads character basically told off the emperor in such a matter of fact way. Also the extra ending just feels unnecessary but oh well. Will we get a sequel and if they did will the same actors return?
BL is acting like this is for a paycheck…. This is such an accurate description of her consistent impression on me. That might explain why she has failed to add nuance to her acting and has been looking bored and also boring from drama to drama. lol
I have watched this drama and fell asleep several times. No drama has ever accomplished this! Highly disappointed in this drama both actors were bland and no chemistry at all. How SAD!
I don’t watch this drama but in general i-fans have always complained about the same thing in non-romance-focused idol dramas.Lacks of chemistry between leads lol.
Whether there is romance or not has nothing to do with the chemistry between the actors. I’ve seen C-dramas where there are no overkill love scenes or even no kisses, but they manage to convey the dynamics, the intention, the complicity. Censored adaptations of BL/GL works are a good example of this overall, such as Couple of Mirrors.
Agreed.
Didn’t finish since I have things I want to watch more, but the cases were interesting enough though awkwardly paced. I felt like both the leads and the supporting leads were going through the motions. They’ve all done better in recent works so I suspect there must be some issue with the writing or directing. Maybe the drama mismanaged the time needed to film it and everyone was trying to get through filming. Still, not a bad drama. I like how Bai Lu has a lower-toned voice to go with her character.
I qm sure of something Bai Lu and Wang Xing Yue do not have chemistry
Their both acting always stoic with minimal expression, no wonder this two hasn’t leveled up become A lister despite so many drama they had.
I actually enjoyed this drama! But reading all these comments have me doubting my taste😅
Nah. It’s up to each person’s personal consideration. In my case, neither a rating on a particular site, artistic values, nor performances have anything to do with whether I get drawn into the plot. Dramas like Unveil Jadewind are not my type because of the way they are directed. If they don’t make an immediate impact on me, I’m likely to get bored since I’m not interested in slow or superficial rhythms.
Folks always talk about subjectivity, but they forget about it when it doesn’t fit their narrative. LOL. It’s quite visible on here. We are not beehives or monoliths, so feel free to like it without fear of having your taste questioned with “analysis” about art.
I’ve never considered Wang Xing Yue a solid talent, not even in The Double because neither his performance nor that of his co-star (Wu Jin Yan) was close to those of Joe Chen, Li Meng and Liang Yong Qi.
He simply had a redeemable and memorable presence.
Being able to have a strong or memorable presence is also a talent. It is the main charm of silent cinema.
