C-actress Tang Yan’s Expected Big Female Lead Drama Lady Liberty Flops with Viewer Feedback Focused on Her Terrible Wig and Stiff Acting
So last month in May what should have been a high profile premiere for a big budget C-drama ended up flopping and slinking into the annals of forgettable dramas. Modern romance Lady Liberty adapted from the novel Single Woman by famed novelist Yi Shu was supposed to be Tang Yan’s first big drama since getting a career boost resurgence from her second female lead role in Blossoms Shanghai. With Mark Chao as the male lead, a strong production and well known stars in supporting roles, she had a lot riding on the drama doing well. Alas she’s probably squandered now all the goodwill and boost from Blossoms Shanghai with this drama flopping in declining viewership during its run and terrible reviews. The worst thing is that all the online commentary and any buzz was all negative centered around criticism of Tang Yan for (1) her terrible short hair wig which made all her scenes distracting, and (2) the reason for the bad wig was reportedly her refusal to cut her hair and insist on using a wig. There are also the usual criticism of her stiff acting on top of it. So basically her unprofessionalism and limitations as an actor (to embody a character even physically as needed) led to what everyone and their mother’s could have predicted when the first stills came out during filming with her in that bad wig. Sad for her not to build on hard earned leveling up last year but this one is kinda all her own doing.

I liked it. A lot. The emotional realism is what kept me watching. Lady Liberty focuses on emotionally scarred adults, divorce fears/commitment anxiety, career pressure in big cities and
complicated modern love. #onlyinchina would people put more emphasis on looks than in the story.
Can’t be worse than that one Zhao li ying drama where her wigs length changed every other scene per episode lol ? But I’m sure she is not the only actor/actress to do so. But I do believe she is hanging on her past reputation by a thread and should probably consider dialing back on feeling she is still on top right now and improve herself. That never lasts and seems supporting roles may be more suited for her in the future.
That drama came out literally 10 years ago lmao. Rookie agent rouge wasn’t exactly a high end drama that was meant to boost her career like this drama was supposed to for Tang Yan. Can’t compare them.
My point is not to criticize zly but to point out that tang yan is not the only actress to pull this wig business. 10 years ago yes but I could not finish the drama because her wigs length changing bugged the heck out of me and I believe the drama was Our Glorious Time. I can stand an off wig if it is consistent but that one was the worst wig business I have ever saw in any drama so far. Lol
@Rero She had a bob in Our Glamorous Time and it was her real hair the whole time. Honestly I think you might be thinking of My Sunshine which is actually a Tang Yang drama lmao. Worst wigs I’ve ever seen in a modern drama.
That wig didn’t look that bad In these pictures. I wouldn’t have known. It was one, unless you told me.
I wonder how the writing is being received. Tang Yan’s acting may not be versatile, but she is typically watchable.
I wonder if the audience just doesn’t like really short hair on their female leads much unless they’re cross-dressing. Like for second leads, it’s totally embraced, but for for main leads, not so much.
Sun Li disproves this theory. She always rock short hair in her modern dramas and people love them.
i dont find anything wrong with the wick. The plot also not bad– acting ok la, may be the director fault and script was written badly.
Tang Yan has always been the weakest of the 80s flowers when it comes to acting and visuals. Personally I can’t stand watching her. Her face barely moves. Can’t say for sure but it looks like her face has been pumped up with so much filler/botox.
Didn’t she also sport a terrible wig in My Sunshine?
I think this was meant to replicate the success of The Tale of Rose. But Tang Yan does not have Liu Yifei’s beauty and screen presence to pull it off.
for big budget drama couldnt she just cut her hair, that like the minimal effort an acor can do
