Even those who toe the line are not immune from the harsh hand of the Chinese government tightening of entertainment industry behavior. This weekend CCTV aired a cultural minority musical celebration program and netizens noticed that original star participants popular young stars Wang Yibo and Guan Xiaotong are both missing. They were at the dress rehearsal last week and listed as part of the show but are now missing and where they would have stood on stage for their performance is now a traditional singer wearing a Mao style suit. There is no indication why they were removed – was it because each fell into one of the categories that the 8 decrees are prohibiting to be shown onscreen or simply overzealous implementation by CCTV to avoid having popular young stars with big fanbases on the program for optics reasons. With that said, reportedly Wang Yibo’s fandom is atwitter with the rumor that he will be iced for the near term for the brouhaha with Zhao Li Ying’s fan’s last week.

Also, The Oath of Love starring Yang Zi & Xiao Zhan has been pulled from Hunan TV last minute. This is because liuliang have to dampen down.
But,I want to see it,besides Sean ciao is not sissy.can't they stream it online.
Even online shows are regulated in China... but anyway this is one show that can’t be streamed solely online because the production company sold the TV rights to Hunan TV and online streaming rights to Tencent. So it has to be shown on both platforms at the same time.
If you think being 'sissy' is the issue here, you have to take a step back and take a real, hard look at yourself and where your values stand.
This is being overzelaously cautious when the rule never said young entertainers can't be on tv.
What?! And I was soo looking forward to it.
Well he gonna push himself to become a better actor with gravitas than what he has been showing so far. If it wasn't for the BL drama popularity, with the acting I have seen, he would be nowhere to be seen. The likes of Gong Jun would have to work harder as well (guy is so try-hard !).
Actors can't rely on acting on a BL series and get popular then just coast by any more.
But at the same time with all of these restrictions, I think c-ent is going to bury itself. Limited on genre, the need to be historical accurate, blood dog script writing, etc that caused production companies to rely on aesthetic to coast by and now that's also restrict. I really don't know how they're going to move around in a little tiny box going forward.
I don't watch a lot of c-drama, I hate that I've to dig around for tiny clues on what was cut from the final product (looking at you The Bad Kids).
Maybe they will go back to what they were doing back in early to mid 00's when manlier young actors (prime Yuan Hong, Nie Yuan or Nicolas tse for example) were the trend before the flower idol domination ?
Nowadays, the makeup, styling, and camera tricks all make actors look younger and more flower-idol-y than they would have looked if they were active 20 years ago. The actors' skin all look so pale and smooth now. I know there is some skin smoothing filters that editors can add to the videos so the actors look poreless.
I always thought young Nicholas Tse was quite pretty (I remember being into anime and he had that anime guy face). If he was styled like the guys are styled these days, he would be a total flower idol.
Work on yourself first before talking about someone whom is not your league go on Nd do your one drama and let us see if you will be popular shame on you
Gong Jun is a great actor!
So... Will chinese entertainment industry go backward after this? So sad :(
It's good. Hopefully the government would restrict it to let the real actors act in dramas instead of choosing a popular idols
The thinks that u have said is true but can't idols act and not only they have work so hard to reach that level so far and u r just hating them for just being an idol u only see their fames not those hard works , efforts and struggle that have made to reach their level and please judge without knowing them prperly.
Who is real actor and who is popular idol? Why make the distinction? And why dismiss bl dramas? Some bl dramas are so well made, bl or not is not the issue. Its just a story. A story well told. Like a good performance, whether so called real actor or so called idol actor.
It appears that the rule of the thumb is that if you are good looking and popular, you can’t be a good actor ?
I was and still am looking forward to watching Xiao Zhan latest movies. I even subscribed to a premium subscription on Tencent's channel. Please dont keep us fans in suspense.
I watch a lot of C-Dramas and I think there is room for improvement. They don't need big budgets to make solid mystery and suspense series, or quality medical dramas, or historical dramas if focus is on the lives of regular people and not nobility. I'm waiting to see something like The Tudors or Outlander, both low-budget but interesting, on China TV. K-drama has very high quality, meaningful series with fabulous script-writing.
About flower-idol actors: give them a serious script and see if they deliver.
Seen both of these shows and you will not be disappointed.I am a Scot living in Manchester, who loves all Korean and Chinese Programmes. I do hope Chinese Entertainment is not being restricted by dictatorship or jealousy. We in the west support the Entertainers in China and Taiwan.
100%with you
Gonna add another comment here. I do a lot of investing, follow economic policy trends, and read everything from SCMP to The Economist to WSJ.
China has been booming and entering the global stage in a plethora of ways. Recent events--Alibaba, de-listing stocks from the NYSE, opening a new stock market in Beijing--indicate that China is trying to reign in its more capitalistic tendencies and centralize domestic economic markets. Beijing wants more control over domestic money, and has even stated that it would prefer a more equitable distribution of wealth--total opposite of US thinking!
This last week China has instituted a ban on video games for under 18s during the school week. Is this Draconian? Yes. Will it be beneficial to the youth? More than likely. The CCP is looking around the world and seeing the class in other countries and policy failures. CCP is trying to keep the culture together before it becomes a disenfranchised, broken society like the US.
Not sure where the balance between US hedonistic freedoms and China's restrictions is, but from a sociopolitical stance it is an interesting study.
These 流量 stars or idols got to get back to basics, ie if you want to be an actor, then put in effort to become one, a good one. If you love dancing or singing, then concentrate on doing what you love and be good at it. If you have relevant skills in whatever you do, no one can take that away from you.
Also, they should concentrate on leading their fans in a positive manner, and not allow them to quarrel or create troubles with other fan groups.
Fans should also spend time to check on themselves, whether they are overly zealous, that they are harming their idol's reputation when they engaged in fan wars!
If they love their idol/s, they have to avoid engaging in trouble making negativities.
Some dancers/singers bcos of their popularity becomes actors n their acting so horrible n some.even cant read the script unlike those real actors they spent so much on training school does not even get a good script so unfair for them
