Top C-drama Actor Xiao Zhan Confirmed Not Returning for Joy of Life Season 2 and His Character Will be Played by C-actor Wang Xing Jian

The ramp up for season 2 of Joy of Life is really kicking off and more and more details will be forthcoming in the lead up. One confirmed news is that now top drama actor Xiao Zhan will not be reprising his character in JOL2 as was rumored. His role will be played by actor Wang Xing Jian who coincidentally worked with Xiao Zhan in last year’s modern romance C-drama Sunshine By My Side. I think everyone expected it after Xiao Zhan got so much bigger since JOL and basically it would not make sense for him to play second male lead to Zhang Ruo Yun as this stage in his career and even if JOL2 is a massive hit I don’t think Xiao Zhan would regret missing out. I hope Wang Xing Jian brings the same vibe tho, it’ll be weird to see the same character (above) become another (below) and just come across very different in onscreen presence.

Top C-drama Actor Xiao Zhan Confirmed Not Returning for Joy of Life Season 2 and His Character Will be Played by C-actor Wang Xing Jian — 79 Comments

  1. If I remember correctly Xiao Zhan only appeared very briefly in JOL 1 and didnt really has any memorable scene so anyone replacing him doesn’t have to worry about having the same vibe or whatnot

  2. I thought this was confirmed a long time ago. This character poster isn’t new. XZ showed up for like 10 mins in the first season. As much as I’d love to see him grace my screen, I don’t think he needs this production and the production also doesn’t need him. Its worse when they replace a bunch of main characters like in Ever Night with actors and actresses that play the role completely different. In comparison, this drama has had limited actor changes.

  3. This was confirmed a long time ago. This is the guy who acted as a part of the hockey couple in Sunshine by my Side, that is a Xinli asset. They destroyed SBMS for this nobody that will remain a nobody just so they can promote him linked to XZ for JOL2.

Xinli are such idiots, JOL is great and doesn’t need this. Imagine destroying a drama to promote a nobody for this? China is wild.

  4. JOL is impressive that it managed to retain like 95% of its cast. Only Xiao Zhan and another girl got replaced. Wished Ever Night received the same treatment.

  5. Didn’t they announced the change of actors months before? Why include it in the promotion now?
The director of JOL visited XZ new drama set twice. Call me delulu but I wish that the reason behind the visit is that he’s coaxing XZ to sing an OST. I love XZ song for JOL1.

  6. That was expected though I wouldn’t mind a nice cameo. I was watching Song Joong-ki’s super fun cameo in Queen of Tears the other day and I was actually thinking that Chinese big names don’t actually do that and that’s too bad.

  7. With exception to Li Qin, the rest of the cast has either been retained or added actors with more prominence, that’s awesome! YBY didn’t have much of a presencd in S1 anyways, no loss if he got swapped out. If only LQ also got swapped out

    • Aww he didn’t get swapped out, sorry for your shattered dreams Coralie.

He refused to come back. I know, I know, unimaginable in your world someone is big enough to refuse JOL but there you go.

      • LOL @Coralie, that’s her point. He didn’t get switched at first place. He refused to be cast again. JOL 2 had been on a long spree of tapping XZ’s name attached to any news about the drama. The drama took advantage of XZ’s popularity with brief screen time in the first season. It had been all over the Chinese SM since the production of JOL 2 was announced until they settled with this nugu WXJ.

      • @Coralie

Yes, it does. You all really are illiterate. Since first grade seems beyond you, he wasn’t switched, he left.

      • @whoever needs to hear this: swapped means they are switched out. Whether he rejected the role or whatever, the role got switched to another person. PERIOD. This isn’t ELI5, get a dictionary

    • Li Qin’s character is so boring. She looks like end game though. Good thing romance is the least important aspect of this drama.

  8. Xiao Zhan had a very minor insignificant role in JOL 1. I agree with the comments above that the production doesn’t need him and vice versa.

It’s also a stretch to call him a top C-drama actor. His biggest hit to date remains to be The Untamed, a BL drama. Subjectively speaking, his has not really followed that up with any true critical or commercial blockbuster hit. However, he is without a doubt, the top traffic star of the post-90’s bunch. And he is seriously trying to parlay his traffic success into long-term acting success instead of coasting on popularity alone, as that will fade.

At this point, him/his team will most likely not take small supporting roles unless it’s a guest star or friendship appearance. I remember he was supporting to Darren Wang and even a nobody like Jason Gu. Xiao Zhan has already paid his dues in plenty of those kinds of small supporting roles in abysmal productions before becoming famous. Heck, he’d probably like to just forget about them and wipe them off of his filmography list. These days, even D-list traffic stars are fighting for top billing, so why would/should an A-list traffic star compromise his status.

    • I find it weird that Koala uses the term “C-drama actor” for Xiao Zhan, normally we would say “Chinese actor”, no? It’s not like this guy hasn’t starred in any movies before, he already starred in two movies as the 1st billed lead actor.

      • Isn’t it weird how XZ fans nitpick every perceived slight? He’s already the top traffic star. Chill, man.

      • 🙄 Chill, dude. Not a XZ fan no matter how many times you keep pinning that title on me. How is it nitpick when it’s a valid point? Go search this blog and find me another instance where Koala uses this term “C-drama actor/actress” or “K-drama actor/actress”?

Take this recent post for example, she uses the term “C-actress” aka Chinese actress here:
        https://koalasplayground.com/2024/05/05/yang-mis-comedic-mystery-c-movie-nothing-cant-be-undone-by-a-hotpot-gets-abysmal-ticket-sales-and-pulled-from-theaters-after-5-days/

And in here she uses the term “Veteran actor” instead of “Veteran K-drama actor”:
        https://koalasplayground.com/2024/05/02/veteran-actor-yoo-jae-myung-to-join-kim-soo-hyun-in-his-next-k-drama-knock-off/#comments

I don’t see her naming Kim Soo Hyun as “Top K-drama actor” either, so why can’t I find it weird?

      • @🙄 Chill, dude. Not a XZ fan no matter how many times you keep pinning that title on me. How is it nitpick when it’s a valid point? Go search this blog and find me another instance where Koala uses this term “C-drama actor/actress” or “K-drama actor/actress”?

      • Ok. “Non-XZ” fan combing old posts to see if Koala insults other actors by calling them “C/K-drama” actors. My weirdness scale is different than yours.

      • Lilith –

You seriously went through several posts checking so you could nitpick Koala using “C-drama actor” instead of Chinese actor? How does one even notice that kind of useless thing?

      • @🙄 So you insists I’m a XZ fan while denying yourself to be ZRY fan because apparently only you can recognize someone’s accomplishments without being their fan. Double standards much? LOL.

Combing old posts? They aren’t that old. Unlike some people, I like having evidence to back up my words. I have visited this site for over 10 years and don’t recall ever seeing Koala use this term “C-drama actor”.

@Bee Who are you? A new name here, who happens to comment shortly after @🙄? Well, you got the sequence wrong. I noticed the weirdness first and brought it up. Then your good friend @🙄 proclaimed me to be XZ fan nitpicking, only then I copy-paste the links as evidence to support my words. 😊

      • @Lilith Poor Xiao Zhan, insulted by being called “Top C-drama actor”. He must be crying in his pillow. Thank you, Non-ZX fan, for acknowledging his pain and protecting him. 🥉

      • @🙄 Omo why would you think it’s an insult? Don’t be ridiculous. Instead of acting like a troll making up stories here, how about you go work on finding another instance of Koala using the term “C-drama actor/actress” here? If you can’t then your words are just moot.

      • @🙄 Omo why would you think it’s an insult? Go work on finding another instance of the term “C-drama actor/actress” being used here, if you can’t then your words are just moot.

      • @Lilith Ohhhhhh, it’s not an insult? So…. Why is it “weird” and why should I care if other actors are or are not called “C/K-drama actors”? Why would anyone waste their time looking for that verbiage or lack thereof?

      • @🙄 Why does finding something weird = insult the thing? You find it weird that your friend who has never like exercising suddenly starting to go for morning runs, are you insulting morning runs?

You obviously care enough to respond to my comment. Since you can’t find anything to support your words, the conclusion is clear. You are just arguing for the sake of being against people you think are XZ fans.

      • 1. I wouldn’t find a friend exercising “weird”.
        2. Only a Non-XZ fan like yourself would think that’s weird. Then you would track her.
        3. Your analogies are as paranoid as your accusations. It’s obvious you thought “C-drama” actor isn’t “normal” to “Chinese actors” because XZ has starred in movies, implying that Koala downgraded and insulted his status.
        4. When shown how ridiculous that sounds, you pretend you never said it.
        5. Then your poor friend can’t even try to better herself without you pulling her into a Non-XZ fan crusade against an internet stranger. Go exercise with her. No one will find it weird. The endorphins will be good for you. Good night!

      • @🙄 Make up your mind, first you say XZ is being insulted, now you’re backtracking and claiming I’m insulting Koala instead. Since where did I pretend I never said anything? You’re such a clown jumping here and there twisting my words and pinning nonsensical accusations on me. Go get a life instead of camping on this site all day to reply to me.

    • No need to wipe them off.

It’s actually good that they are seen. People can see he had the correct path of playing small supporting roles while his acting skills were still being honed. He did what so many people are demanding – play support roles while you are improving.

It’s just that he is Xiao Zhan and way too many people are impossibly sour over his success because they want their faves in his spot. But that is why its important his real history is visible and why I think he isn’t ashamed of any of his roles.

    • @Guest, LOL. I read bitterness in your tone. Understand cos your fave has never been able to achieve his popularity and star power. XZ doesn’t need to wipe any past experience off. To the opposite, he reminded ppl of that very often in his interviews. All your condescending description about this talented but humble actor is coming from your own excessive brain exercise and wild mental gymnastics. LOL.

BTW, when I watched JOL 1, I knew nobody in the cast since I was new to Cdrama. It’s interesting to see all the comments under the Youtube videos were 95% about Xiao Zhan. LMAO. Back then I wondered who the heck this guy was to attract so many viewers to the drama that’s just so boring and cringe-making after midway for me to fast forward many eps and later found out he only had screen time for how long? 10-15 minutes? LMAO.

      • There is nothing bitter or condescending about my comment. In fact, you are the only person to respond negatively to it. To be so sensitive and easily offended just comes across as being highly insecure and therefore threatened by any comment that isn’t only praise.

      • @Somebody

Relax, they didn’t say anything wrong.

I don’t agree about no hits because Youth Memories was an objective big hit but many people tend to not understand how well it did. And even if they disagree, it’s hardly terrible.

      • Check out this somebody hypocrite. You made mocking comments about fangirls for defending their fave from your silly remarks in previous posts yet look at you getting heated just because someone made a harmless comment about your fave. Dumbass.

      • LOL. It’s legit for me to question Guest for her comment to imply XZ seems to be ashamed of his past experience doing a lot of insignificant roles. Firstly, that’s not true based upon what’s out of XZ’s own mouth. Secondly, someone who respects an actor wouldn’t have gaslighted and throw shade on XZ in this way. @Guest did not make such kind of condescending remarks in one thread about XZ. She’s clearly not a fan of XZ and that’s fine. But it’s legit for me to defend XZ as his fan. Yes, I’m a HUGE fan of XZ and I’ve never denied that he’s my fave among all. Go ahead call me rabid LOL just as I did call others crazy about their faves rabid when they aggressively defended. But name calling Dumbass for the reason I defended my fave just showed yourself more than an imbecile. LMAO.

Why should I feel insecure to stan the most popular celeb in China who keeps doing better and better beyond his own fame? LMAO. Who are so insecure here to resort to name calling all the time on SM cos their logic training is just so shitty from bad education and poor upbringing? LOL 😭🤣😥😅😂

      • @🤣 you must be new here, she’s a known rabid troll. If you see her name, just ignore her. She craves attention

      • @🤣, how am I hypocritic defending my own fave while calling those crazy fans rabid? There’s no contradiction as you dimwit have trouble realizing. LOL. Call me rabid! I just don’t care! Who cares about if anyone is rabid on virtual space? You going banana in real life is indeed something to be concerned about. LOL. Go touch grass if you can even find some. LOL. 😭

PS. It’s not cos I’m obsessed with you but Koala kept blocking all my comments. I don’t mind goofing around again. LOL.

      • @Coralie, LOL. I don’t care any keyboard nugus rambling on SM. The only thing matters to me is freedom to express, not online bullies/trolls who mock. LMAO. You’re welcome to ignore my comments that I love to see it happen. But you just can’t get over me. That’s how obsessed you are.
        LOL.

C drama fans have more trouble controlling emotions without responding with hate repeatedly. K drama fans are doing better in this aspect. Only very few K fans went on to provoke me repeatedly. Go learn from them. LOL.

    • Where Dreams Begin was a hit. Critically and in terms of ratings. He also produced a great performance here, better than CQL, which netted him the breakthrough actor of the year award at CMG China TV drama awards. Zhang Lingxin got the supporting actress award for it. The drama itself was nominated for drama of the year. It was a quality drama that CCTV emphasised last year. For June, to produce those results, with that genre, it was a major thing.

He actually is yet to benefit from it, though the Kong Sheng movie that is coming up will probably be the first follow up resource.

Legend of Zanghai and Condor Heroes are follow up to Ace Troops and his time in theatre (this turned out to be especially crucial for Zanghai) but we haven’t seen them yet. In any case, these three are all great directors and show both what the industry thinks of him and the results of his works that they are privy to. He wouldn’t be doing these if he wasn’t showing real results, not water, and skill.

      • @Lola…let me make a disclaimer first cause I know how sensitive XZ fans can be: I’ve only watched him in the Untamed and from that role, I could see his great potential. Some ppl just have that natural charm on screen and he’s definitely one of those. Plus he seems to take acting as a craft seriously. So with that said, my following question is not shading him in anyway but arises as a natural thought from your comment. Putting aside the discussion on whether a drama is a critical hit or not cause I know that can be more subjective, am wondering how do you measure the rating success of a drama. This is something I’ve been curious/ confused about following Cent news because I can never seem to find a consensus on any drama’s rating success. If Koala posts an article about a drama’s success, there inevitably will be comments about how that success is fake / driven by water armies/ bought hot searches/ fight between streaming vs tv views/ etc . So my question is whether there exits some kind of independent body that measure a drama’s success in China?

Also, I really don’t understand why companies employ water armies when everyone know about that practice so like what’s the point? 😅 like I know that celebs get endorsements based on their popularity so companies must surely have their in house professionals to measure the actual numbers so seriously, what’s the point of faking your followers/ engagements? 🤔

      • @R There is no one independent body to measure a drama’s success in China. You always have to look at multiple charts, data, any increase/drop in the number of advertisements in the drama and whether the main lead(s) gain any better endorsements or better resources after the broadcast. Even so, charts’ calculations keep changing every now and then so it’s difficult to compare recent dramas to the older ones. The general consensus is – if most of the charts and data are consistent, and the main lead(s) did gain better endorsements and resources, then the drama can be recognised as a hit.

TV dramas and streaming dramas work differently too. TV dramas are dramas that were first broadcasted or concurrently broadcasted (first air date on the same day) with a streaming platform, for this type the drama needs to have high CVB ratings (currently the only official trustable source) coupled with decent web ratings (charts that claim to calculate the combination of web views, heat index etc). It furthers go on to split into which periods always tend to have higher ratings such as CNY/winter/summer school holiday periods. Streaming dramas are the most difficult to measure as it is the easiest to insert water.

Industry insiders do know the real data, however, companies still employ water armies because only a few endorsement companies have access to the real data and the rest can be fooled. It’s also a tactic to fool the fans so as to keep the fandom’s morale high, I mean, who would want to stan a celebrity that doesn’t have potential?

  9. Koala is so late for this casting news. LOL

WXJ was one of the ice hockey extras who jinxed SBMS. Good luck on JOL 2. LOL

  10. JOL 1 is overrated with or without XZ. The plot started interesting but went south after those supporting actresses came out one by one flirting with the ML. LOL. It was cringe-making and a snoozefest after the midway that I didn’t hesitate to FF or just skip the entire eps.

JOL 1 is part of XZ’s resume on the paper but TBH the drama is a non factor to XZ’s current status and acting skills. JOL fans don’t need to be bitter about the fact that XZ refused to even show up as a cameo in the sequel to that insignificant drama to him.

  11. The reason why I consider Zhang Ruoyun an ok actor but somehow overrated is that he’s monotonous in different roles across different genres. He had his show time and spotlight in the royal court scene in JOL 1. But that’s it. I checked his dramas after JOL 1 and found him somehow had the same vibes and aura regardless of whether the drama is costume or modern. So, I can never be his fan. He’s not versatile and hasn’t shown any potential of being versatile either. Besides, he’s plain looking. LOL. I finished JOL 1. There’s no appeal for me to even check JOL 2. There’re so many good old Kdramas to watch. Why wasting time on a sequel of an overrated Cdrama? LOL.

    • Zhang Ruoyun has an enviable career. He gets big diverse projects, featured on CCTV, and countless people wanting to work with him on sequels. His acting is well regarded by the general public and passerbys, and his dramas always bring in ratings. The last one crashed at the end, but it will have no effect on him because he has such a good reputation. He’s not the best looking because he has charisma and doesn’t have to be a slave to “visuals”. It’s an advantage to be attractive but not “pretty” in order to blend into multiple roles. Best part? He can balance success and be married.

I pray that all my favorites can have a healthy career like him.

      • We just agree to disagree. I don’t find him appealing in either looks or acting. There are other C actors besides my own fave that I’d be interested to check out their dramas but not him. The only drama of ZRY I got to finish was JOL 1 due to some suspension and court politics in the plot, not because of his acting TBH. His subsequent dramas all have lost appeal to me therefore thanks to boring stories. That’s just my personal preference. Nothing to debate about.

Without XZ being tagged in this post, which I think pretty irrelevant out of blue, I wouldn’t even have bothered to read any information about JOL 2. Well, I’m used to XZ being a clickbait anyway. LOL

      • @Somebody It is perfectly cool that ZRY doesn’t appeal to you personally, but that doesn’t negate anything I said about him being most actors’ career dream.

✅ Good acting reputation among the GENERAL PUBLIC.
✅ Leading man in big projects, mostly non-idol
        ✅ CCTV, multiple times
✅ Brings in good ratings consistently
✅ Able to act with other powerhouse actors
✅ Freedom to have a life and family

Can you think of another young actor like him? He hasn’t won a Magnolia award yet, but all the other positives, especially being able to have a family, isn’t a bad compromise.

And 14 million people reserved for ZRY, he doesn’t need click bait.

      • Oh well! I believe ZRY has strong backing with very good resources. His dad isn’t a nugu in C-ent. That has helped him a lot. Surely he himself is prolly also very hard working. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve the current status he has achieved. But his acting just doesn’t work on me. How can you push someone snoozing zzzZZZZ on his shows to say GOODNESS ZRY is such a prince charming and Oscar worthy? LOL

BTW, you kept emphasizing ZRY being married. LOL. How the heck is that relevant to whether I should be his fan or not?

But respect for your dedication to be his loyal fan.

      • No one is negating anything here. It’s all our personal subjective opinion and preference regarding dramas and acting. Acting-wise, ZRY isn’t up my alley. I don’t care about actor’s private life, even my own fave, XZ’s private life. I only critique their performances on screen and the dramas they have worked with. Personal relationships, kids and partners, personal life, social life, how they interact with other people, and awards, etc. etc. don’t matter to me when I assess an actor and his drama. I only focus on their acting and drama quality.

But nice for other people to admire him on all that. LOL.

      • @Somebody Cool. You agree with my ✅ and that he is most actors’ career dreams. To clarify, it isn’t his marriage that is interesting, it’s that he has the freedom to be married. That’s the enviable accomplishment. It does have an indirect effect on dramas and an actor’s well being. Good that you are sane unlike other liulang fans that restrict their love lives.

Different strokes for different folks, his acting doesn’t appeal to you, XZ’s isn’t my cup of tea. 🤝🏼 Since JOL is overrated and a waste of time to you, I guess I won’t see you in any of the drama’s discussion posts. Have a good day.

      • @🙄, you must be mistaken!!! I don’t agree with you about anything nor do I consider him most actors’ career dream cos I absolutely don’t think XZ dreams of being him. LOL. I just don’t care what you have said about him cos he has done nothing to register in my head so far. LOL. Don’t shovel your words into my mouth that I actually disagree with.

But nice for him to have ppl like you admire him, not me though. Can you get my points? LOL.

      • @Somebody Scroll up.
🙄: “It is perfectly cool that ZRY doesn’t appeal to you personally, but that doesn’t negate anything I said about him being most actors’ career dream.”
Somebody: “No one is negating anything here.”

I am no English major, but….a double negative is a positive. So which ✅ doesn’t an actor want?

Anyways, I agree. This is tiresome. ZRY doesn’t appeal to you. XZ bores me to tears. Literally. They are both successful. The world will continue to be round.

      • @🤣, lol. You’ve got problem with elementary English comprehension!!! “No one is negating anything here” isn’t equal to “I agree with you.” If you have trouble getting across, I don’t mind repeating my point again: I just don’t care about ZRY who’s a non factor to me in my experience as a C drama viewer. LOL. Stop being repulsively shoveling your mouthful words into my own mouth. That’s obnoxious and getting uncomfortable.

Go close rank around a fire pit with your JOL and ZRY fans. I assure you that would be more fun than getting the cold shoulder from non fans like me. LOL

      • Okie dokie. Seems like you don’t like seeing your own words repeated in the linear context it was written. I will go hang out in other JOL posts now. I will wave to you when I see you there. Good night!

    • @Somebody I didn’t ask you to be his fan. Just remarking that he has a undeniable respectable career. No doubt his family background helped, but a famous dad alone doesn’t guarantee success (see Chen Feiyu). Most C-Ent has backing, it is difficult to be a leading actor without some favoritism. But consistently bringing in the numbers after is not guaranteed.

I mentioned family because that is a basic life goal of most people. “Family” for him means a wife and kids, but “family” could simply mean being able to spend time with your loved one without the interference of toxic fandom culture. Nope, my favorites haven’t achieved that.

Actually, I have only seen 2 ZRY dramas and much more Xiao Zhan ones. I am not ZRY’s fan, he hasn’t compelled me to watch all his work yet. I can recognize someone’s accomplishments without being their fan.

      • Agree with this comment. I think he’s enviable in the sense he has two successful male centric dramas, in a market where male centric costume dramas often flop or perform mediocrely. Alot of cfans are saying the 排面 they give for JOL (top billing over several veterans and accomplished actors, poster featuring his char only, 90% of original cast returning) is a dream come true for 生粉 who wants their bias to receive the 大男主 treatment. Look how Allen Ren fans bashed Li Yitong so much when it was rumored that she has more scenes.

Yea and not to mention he doesn’t have to worry about the crazy fans that comes with liuliang since he’s happily married; while having better resources than most liuliangs. Truly the best of both worlds.

      • @🙄 I actually don’t think ZRY’s dad really helped him out that much. From previous rumors and allegations, his mom raised him, and his dad actually falsified his name and signed contracts on his behalf causing a number of lawsuits. He’s cut off relationship with his father, if I recall correctly…

Anyways prior to JoL, he was pretty much a nobody. CFY got hype for being the son of a famous director, but I barely read of any hype of ZRY. He earned his fame on his own with really lucky projects and skills.

      • @Coralie Ah, I didn’t know that. Thank you! There are some terrible parents.

      • Cutting off relationship is just for show. Most of the veteran actors in JOL are friends with ZRY’s father. It’s no coincidence that they happened to gather together in one drama where ZRY is 1st billed.

      • @Lilith Apparently ZRY sued his own father over the contracts lol. So there’s probably truth to the rumors of relationship discord. I read some articles about how the director selected the ML and ZRY personified Fan Xian. I don’t know how many strings were pulled behind the scenes, but it seems plausible that he got it on his own merits

      • @Coralie I would still say JOL is put together through his dad’s connections even if he really cut off relationship with his dad now, because he hasn’t fallen out with his dad when JOL was filming. His works after JOL, yes, I will agree he got them on his own merits since he has made a name for himself now. I recall ZRY himself had said that he didn’t receive any offers when he first tried to get into acting until his dad pulled strings to land him a small role in his dad’s drama or similar.

    • @😭, LOL. To your disappointment, you won’t see me in any JOL related threads as long as XZ isn’t tagged as a clickbait again. I’m not gonna check out JOL 2. I have ZERO interest in the story or any cast of JOL 2. Your marketing of JOL and ZRY fails 100%. LOL. 😥😅😂

      • Perfect. As predicted. The drama instantly became better without your negativity around. ♟

      • @😭, LOL. The volume of your bitterness! You seemed to be very disappointed at my rejection of JOL and ZRY.

  12. does anyone know who this guy is and whether he has a lot of backing? its strange to me that they gave him so much screentime in SSBMS and now he’s also replacing a role that was previously associated with XZ. maybe just pure coincidence…

  13. He does. He is a major Xinli asset that they are pushing hard. It’s not a coincidence btw, they did this on purpose so that they can play that card for marketing during jol, they have already started.

Xinli plays these games relatively often, XZ is not the first person they did this to. Bigger names got suckered.

  14. @R I guess, successive re-runs with good ratings is a good indication if a drama’s a hit or a bust. I think, most of the time water data are only applied to the premiere of the drama for bragging rights. Sponsors like brand deals are also a good indication. Like you said, business people have their own data and research on who and what to bet their money on.

  15. Who told you he’s a “top C drama actor”? He’s not a professional actor, he is mainly a singer “idol” (in the context of the Asian Idol Industry). His acting skill is obviously clumsy if you compare him with other actors in the show. He is not a “top C-drama actor”. Let me tell you who are the tops, the actor for Pingping, and the one for the Emperor, they are the tops.

    • Keep crying. It’s always so amazing to see you people triggered.

Someone should tell people from the theatre where he acted that he is just an idol singer, as well as Tsui Hark and Zheng Xiaolong. They missed the memo so are sure to be happy to be educated by a bitter anon chairdweller.

    • LOL those so-called old acting bones!!!!!!! 😭 I honestly confess a lot of C dramas are ruined by those old acting bones who are too self-assured to bring any fresh air to the stories. They appeared to be always ready to give long ass lectures. LOL. They are boring to the heck to watch if plots aren’t interesting enough. Some younger actors, however, have more charisma and impressive presence on screen.

In the West, there’s no such rule that actors have to be out of acting academies where theater majors receive theatrical training. But it’s so weird in China that an actor is expected to graduate from a registered acting school. Acting has mostly to do with talent, just like most arm forms. But Chinese have made it like a discipline following certain rules and models and acting skills. LOL. No wonder a lot of Chinese actors who have degrees from those acting departments look hella boring and dry on screen.

  16. it’s been years, it’s clearly stated NO. Don’t have the gut to go on without using his name? Grow up. Even his role wasn’t main in JOL1, I genuinely enjoyed it for its own goodness but as for now, i started to feel sickening watching that drama keep tagging and nagging the person who longer related to. Action is low, TC and JOL production.

    • That’s what I’ve seen on Chinese social media all over whenever JOL 2 was promoted by whoever including online influencers and blogging sites etc. etc. Yes, non stop tagging XZ’s name in each post and news about JOL 2 even though he was not even the 5th supporting actor in the cast of JOL 1. LMAO. As for yesterday when I checked XZ’s recent news, some obviously bribed C-ent media still shamelessly said “Actor XZ of Joy of Life 1 blah blah blah blah blah…” even though this overrated drama is a nonfactor on his entire acting resume. The scheme to tap his popularity and fame by tagging his name for the purpose of promoting JOL series is so barefaced. Speechless! It has become so phenomenally laughable and annoying that I’m completely turned off from this drama and the production team.

  17. The casting of this new actor as YBY was announced long ago, it’s just Xinli who keeps using Xiao Zhan’s name to gain heat for JOL 2.

As much as the bitter fans in the comment area wants to deny, Xiao Zhan obviously is past playing Nth supporting actor in JOL 2. He is the male lead in Tsui Hark’s film Legend of Condor Heroes and is now filming as male lead to Zheng Xiaolong’s revenge drama Zanghai Zhuan. His upcoming rumored project is a movie from Daylight and China Film Group by their top team of Kong Sheng, Lan Xiaolong, Han Sanping and Hou Hongliang.

    • Wow zheng xiaolong the director of the legend of zuanhuan? This drama is legendary and catapulted sun li to fame. And Tsui Hark too? Xiao Zhan is definitely moving up in the world. Both top resource in tv and movies.

And his next rumoured work is the team behind nirvana in fire I believe.

Xiao Zhan is one of those once in a generation superstars who has both the acting chops and the traffic. No wonder there are so many pressed fans of others trying to put him down.

      • @Gungjaimeen

Yes, Zheng Xiaolong who directed the classic drama Legend of Zhen Huan/Empresses in the Palace. It’s currently still filming and should be finished this month. He filmed Tsui Hark’s movie for more than 6 months last year and JOL 2 was filmed during that time. It’s hilarious reading how some comments of JOL fans tried to mock him for choosing to film a national IP movie with legendary director Tsui Hark as male lead over a supporting role in JOL 2 😂

Where Dreams Begin/The Youth Memories is the only drama which CCTV directly published the performance report in 2023 and the only drama who got that treatment in 2022 was A Lifelong Journey.

The most accurate indicator of a successful project is the follow-up project, Xiao Zhan was chosen by Tsui Hark and Zheng Xiaolong after the success of his dramas and his critically-acclaimed performances in theatre play A Dream Like A Dream. Of course some fans of others still refuse to accept that he’s already ahead of his peers of the same age.

  18. The thing about ZRY is that he’s the same in every single drama he’s in. I heard he gets all these roles because of his family background. In particular Joy of Life they managed to get all these senior actors to act alongside him. The whole drama is carried by the supporting cast while JRY benefits and takes all the accolades. I mean realistically it’s an ensemble drama trying to pass off as a male lead drama.
