One of the top hates of South Korean is when the rich/powerful/famous misuse their authority. Case in point warm nuts Korea Air heiress and her Nut Rage Incident a few years back. Last weekend’s complaint against actor Byun Woo Seok and the actions of his privately hired security at the airport inconveniencing and overstepping their bounds against travelers by checking their tickets before letting them into the lounge and also shining flashlights on people has now gotten even bigger. The airport released an official statement denying the private security’s claim that they cleared such actions first with the airport which allowed it. The airport says such behavior is not allowed and it was not told beforehand. Byun Woo Seok’s agency apologized but placed all the blame with the private agency it hired saying it never told the guards to act that way. But that has not placated K-netizens as this is on all the news networks and articles because it is seen as Byun Woo Seok getting his first rising in popularity and overstepping, and he is getting blamed for this because he was standing right there the entire time his private guards were doing this and should have stopped them. Basically the tl:dr is that even if your private staff is behaving in ways that overstep, as the star you have the responsibility to step in and do the right thing to correct them.

Sigh. This is all his agency’s fault as I already said in the last topic regarding this. I blame them for not just freakin apologizing. This has now become bigger with the accusation of misuse of authority on the artist rather than just the security person/team. Now there are articles on Naver outside of the entertainment section and that spells disaster. I watched some other photos with security using flashlights, and all of them looks like security shining flashlights not on people who looking at BWS, but at people who filming/recording BWS. Maybe for others it doesn’t change anything, but for me it’s a big difference.

I’m curious as to who the security firm’s other clients have been or if the security firm is just some agency executive’s loser relative trying to start a security business. BWS’s previous airport trips didn’t seem to use these crazy, excessive measures. And I don’t remember this happening for any other korean celeb.

Someone mentioned Lee Jongsuk’s ‘airport incident’ from 2014 in the previous post but that wasn’t even serious and imo LJS wasn’t in the wrong there to freak out on being approached inside the airport by a ‘fan’ aka sasaeng (and arguably that was caused by the opposite problem to this case – too little security or them not doing enough, vs security going OTT like for BWS here).
I read this incident have gotten bigger then I originally thought. Members of public have reported the behaviour to those security team to the National Human Rights Commission of Korean. I wonder if any more will come out of it.

It’s honestly appalling that the articles have continued to focus simply on BWS’s character when (as mentioned in the previous post), actually the allegations are quite serious.
The fact that (1) a private security company may be looking at personal information like passports, (2) that Incheon Airport clearly can’t get its own regulations together and is confused about its own operating procedures, and (3) clarification required on how Varo advised its security detail to proceed at the airport. Instead of focusing on these actual structural issues which could potentially prevent these situations from happening in the future, comments are solely focusing on malicious attacking the actor (which is ultimately unproductive and does nothing to resolve any of the issues and allegations mentioned above).
Woo Seok may or may not have known about the extent of his security detail beforehand, he may or may not have been involved in approving/rejecting these. Given how busy his schedule was I lean on him likely just leaving everything up to the agency, but the main issues at hand mentioned above likely would not be impacted whether or not Woo Seok approved of these actions. At this point, there are major systemic problems relating to airports and security details, and focusing on the celebrity himself likely does nothing to actually resolve them (as Woo Seok is likely symptomatic rather than a cause of the problem at hand).

He too is an employee of his company as the security and is probably instructed to go along with them rather than interfere in their work. Incheon should investigate too though, because if they hadn’t agree to all this circus why would the lounge and security personnel not react? I have worked at an airport before and there’s no way we would let behavior like that pass unless it was prearranged.

I feel that the whole incident has turned into a witch hunt, reminding me of Chinese actor Xiao Zhan’s 227. Not a fan of BWS and barely knowing him at all besides FF watching his hit drama Lovely Runner, I’m just speaking based upon all the public information (accurate or twisted maybe) I’ve read so far.
Being a client of a private security company in the past, I literally had no idea in advance what types of security measures the company would adopt at the time of the service. They only assured me they would protect my privacy as well as safety under the contract of the service we agreed upon. I hired them per recommendation from a pro public security officer and per their reputation in the industry. I just trusted their security measures without questioning anything ahead or during the service. It’s legit BWS and/or even his agency had no idea of whatsoever would and had happened during that period in the airport under their security protection.
Anyhow, at this point, I only wish BWS and his agency survive the PR fallout and get back on their track soon. Good luck!

Based on the newspaper’s political and business leanings (regarding Incheon airport privatization) and the prominent retail space they have given to the article, I think they will continue digging into the airport security issue. Another tidbit that came up was the security was also blocking emergency exit areas which is a safety issue.

People saying he is being attacked by competitors and people saying he is a nobody are not good.
Byeon Woo Seok has been in the industry for a decade. There should be enough footprint of him behaving arrogant, selfish, abusing his power, etc. but there is not (unlike other artists who already came with a track record LOL). So I will give him the right of the doubt.
I said in a prior comment that the magnitude of this airport incident reminded me of Xiao Zhan’s 227, in the way how other parties dragged down an irrelevant celebrity. I’m not saying the two incidents are comparable. But the way the artists are attacked out of proportion is similar in nature. Someone disagreed. LOL.
I’m so amused by the exchanges in the comments arguing about BWS’ popularity. LOL. Why is his popularity such a concern to some people?
I have seen all his dramas, but I only appreciate his performance in Lovely Runner. Judging by this drama alone, I can see why his popularity is on the rise.
Please support Byeon woo seok as actor instead of giving negative publicity to curb his popularity. We need good Korean actors like instead of current dry spell in Korean entertainment world . criticism is valid, but you can criticize without abuse. i don’t believe the airport that allows idols, actors, and actresses to be mobbed daily basis. the same airport that allows employees to hold up kcelebrities passports so the media and so-called fans to take pictures of it. all this was happening and no airport security stepped in? ok sure.
kcelebrities don’t even have a say in what they eat or wear on a given day. i just read the entire cast of perfect family wasn’t paid and the show is about to air in august. i’m supposed to believe that he can tell security company used by huge stars what to do? i agree mistakes were made and need to addressed properly. everything else is just abuse at this point.
